HOPE MILLS Citizens in Cumberland County are being told to be wary of another blue light bandit who earlier this month stopped a man presumably for speeding and then confiscated the victim s gun for a bogus violation. According to various reports, Douglas Simmons was driving on Golfview Drive two weeks ago when a gray Ford Crown Victoria came up from behind and activated blue lights on the car. Simmons reported that it was very convincing with lights in the grille like a typical unmarked patrol car. After stopping, the driver wearing plain clothes approached, wearing a sheriff s star-type badge on his belt. Simmons was compliant with the suspect, believing him to be a legitimate law officer. The impersonator spotted Simmons gun on the dash of his vehicle and told him that he would have to confiscate the weapon due to a violation. The bandit left without giving any sort of record of the stop or of the alleged violation. Simmons contacted the Cumberland County Sheriff s Department and was told that it was not one of their deputies that had stopped him. He then called the Hope Mills Police Department to report the theft of his weapon by the impersonator. Cumberland County authorities are therefore encouraging citizens to be wary of a suspect driving an unmarked, gray Crown Victoria masquerading as a law officer. Their advice is if there are any doubts about the legitimacy of a traffic stop, slow down and only stop in a populated area, and if night, well-lit. At any time, motorists can also contact 911 or the Highway Patrol at *47 to check the legitimacy of a traffic stop.
DUNN At 1.45 million square feet, the new Rooms To Go Distribution Center in Dunn looms suddenly from the tree line along I-95. Traveling by the new facility, gives motorists a sense of truly the immense size of the building. There is nothing subtle about the $40 million facility. Doubling as a warehouse, distribution center and showroom, the facility is brightly colored in red, green, blue and yellow, which are signature colors of the corporate brand. It has its own road off Exit 75, a giant electronic sign near the roadway and if all that isn t enough to garner attention, it s made complete with 3 huge water fountains, shooting water high in the air. MOOSE, WY Family and friends are mourning the loss of two women that, authorities say, plunged approximately 200 feet while attempting to climb a mountain in Wyoming. e incident occurred in the Grand Teton National Park around 11.a. m Saturday, according to the National Park Service. The construction of Rooms To Go s second largest similar facility will, no doubt, be of great economic benefit for the Dunn area and likely bolstering employment with increased growth if the facility is capable of drawing additional business to the area. from Rocky Mount, NC, and Catherine Nix, both 28 years of age, were currently living in Jackson, WY. Both were killed in the fall, which took place on the 12,300-foot Teewinot Mountain. The accident occurred at an elevation of 11,500 feet. The agency reported that another female, 26-yearold Rebecca Anderson (also of Jackson) was traveling with Strandberg and Nix, but avoided the fall and was rescued from a narrow ledge unhurt. Strandberg has been reported to be the granddaughter of former Lt. Governor Jim Gardner, who is also known as having partnered with Leonard Rawls to open the first companyfranchised Hardee s restaurant in Rocky Mount, NC. Matthew 11:28 ROANOKE, VA While conducting a live interview on television, a news reporter and a photographer were gunned down as viewers watched in horror. Alison Parker, a former reporter with WCTI in New Bern, was fatally wounded in a shooting at the Bridgewater Plaza on Smith Mountain Lake as she reported on tourism for her current station, WDBJ-TV. Vester Lee Flanagan AKA Bryce Williams (his on-air name) fired numerous shots at close range, taking aim at Alison Parker, photographer Adam Ward and a third victim, Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce Vicki Gardner. Eastern North Carolina viewers may remember Bryce Williams having worked at WNCT-TV in Greenville for almost two years. Soon after the shooting, law enforcement spotted F l a n a g a n (Williams real surname) and began pursuing him. As he fled, Flanagan tweeted on Twitter messages indicating distain for Alison Parker and implied Former news personality Bryce Williams stands over cameraman Adam Ward pointing a gun as Ward laid dying on a deck surface of the Bridgewater Plaza. she had made insensitive comments about him. On Twitter, he alerted anyone who was reading that he had videoed the murders (presumably on his phone camera) and had posted them to his Facebook account, which was verified to have been posted. His Twitter account was soon suspended and the disturbing video was removed quickly from his account. The disturbing video shows Flanagan walk up behind cameraman Adam Ward. He points his gun at Alison briefly, yet she either didn t see him or she ignored his presence, going on with the live interview. He lowers the weapon for 23 seconds before abruptly firing it multiple times. lanagan s video reveals that he shot at Alison first, striking her before she could get away. She runs out of view, but presumably collapses soon after. Ward was apparently shot next as Flanagan seems to become more intent on shooting than recording his crimes. Ward can be heard audibly moaning loudly and the video goes dark. According to reports, Flanagan had been fired from the WDBJ almost two years ago. KINSTON Due to expansion, one manufacturing facility in Lenoir County will be adding 72 jobs to the area. Ohio-based window manufacturing company, Associated Materials consider as many as three different locations to plan their expansion before deciding on their Kinston plant. With the expansion, comes a $4.5 investment The plant was built in 1989 and manufactures vinyl windows. Average salaries for the new positions will be $32,222. The expansion will take place over a period of about three years. Associated Materials is located on Farm Gate Road, Kinston. An estimated 1,537,643 students have kicked off a new school year this week while students at North Carolina s nearly 130 year-round schools jumped back into the swing of things earlier this month. This number of students represents an increase of 17,000 from last year and an increase of more than 61,000 from 2008-09. Among these students, an estimated 1.459 million will attend one of North Carolina s 2,442 traditional public schools while an estimated 78,000 plan to attend one of the 160 charter schools. And so far nearly 20,000 students have enrolled to take at least one online course this fall through the nation s second largest state-supported virtual school, the North Carolina Virtual Public School. This new school year brings students more options for learning than they have ever had before, said State Superintendent June Atkinson. Technology is helping students learn from anywhere at any time. Teachers can now use handheld devices to deliver formative assessments that offer real-time results. Educators and school leaders are collaborating with colleagues across the state through Home Base. There are many exciting things happening in public schools and I am hopeful this year is going to be full of success stories for students and teachers. Other highlights for the 2015-16 school year include: A new required hand signal all bus drivers will use to tell students when a street is safe to cross. Drivers are receiving training in using the signal in the months to come and must start using it by January 1, 2016. An estimated 800,000 students statewide ride on one of their districts 13,500 school buses. For more information, visit www. ncbussafety.org. Use of the Standard Course of Study content adopted in 2010 and implemented for the first time in 2012. These content standards identify what students should know and be able to do as result of their educational experiences. Teachers use these standards to select or develop curriculum and to determine developmentally appropriate strategies. A new pilot study in which 9,000 5th- and 6thgrade students will take three shorter tests throughout the year and a shorter End-of-Grade assessment in math or English language arts. Some people call this "throughgrade" testing. A State Board of Education task force on testing supported the idea for the study to explore a different approach to statewide testing that would be more favorable than a single test given at the end of each year. This change addresses concerns expressed by school and district leaders, educators and parents regarding equity within classrooms and athletic eligibility. Additional changes to quality points and course weights will be phased in this year, beginning with ninth graders. Districts and charters are beginning a new school year with no state budget in place, funding for teacher salary increases, teacher assistants, textbooks, professional development, driver s education and other public school resources is uncertain at this time. "I am hopeful that our lawmakers will recognize that districts and charter schools need to make funding decisions now and that the final budget will include the resources our public schools need to provide all students and opportunity to be successful, Atkinson said.
