Commons contains public property and private property over which people have certain traditional rights. Today, the commons are also understood within a cultural sphere including literature, music, arts, design, film, video, television, radio, information, software, sites of heritage, public education, health and the infrastructure that allows our society to function.
Mapping the Urban Commons The Urban Commons workshop is part of an overarching project and theme at UMA for the academic year 2015 2016, and will consist of workshops, lectures and exhibition. The two to three week workshop will consider urban space as a space of the commons a space of social interaction where resources are collectively owned or shared between or among communities populations. Urban commons are urban spaces and places held in common, by and for the community and are defined by those who need and use them rather than by their formal ownership. For centuries there have been struggles over what is to be defined and practiced as commons. Currently such struggles can be seen over natural and digital resources, but also about urban spaces manifested in movements around community gardens, sharing of land, alternative forms of ownership and co-creation of spaces. The notion of urban commons is part of alternative emerging practices and contemporary discussion about social and cultural democracy in urban planning. Who is represented in the decision-making - by who and for whom? What are the resources, land use, urban spaces and places, infrastructure, and buildings implemented? What is the role of the architect in these processes?

Task Can we open up the different definitions of the commons? Are there different ways of understanding and discussing the commons through various practices? We propose, therefore, a search for the commons, a search that will takes the form of a mapping process and explorations of alternative ways of making common spaces. 1. A walk through the city of Umeå, in groups and with a map + pamphlet: Tracing the social and contested history of urban spaces, you will with the help of a pamphlet/guidebook/map follow four examples of urban struggles for the right for urban commons, spaces by and for the community of Umeå. The examples illustrate the urban struggles of the recent decades in the city, each representing a theme: Natural environment, Scale and migration, Women s rights and Culture. 2. Own mapping of the commons In groups, you will do your own proposed city walk(s) and own mapping of the commons. Gather and collect information on your specific issue, looking at certain aspects relevant to your area of study.
A. We propose to make walks across the city in three different types of sites. Each group will get one alternative allocated: a) the river edge b) the main city streets c) the edge between the inner city areas and the surrounding neighbourhoods B. Look, explore, describe: - what you see, - what groups of people use these urban spaces - who is there and who is not there. - what is public and what is private, - boundaries / edge between urban space and nature C. Material Gather your observations through a sequence of a) Photographs b) Sketches/ drawings c) An analytical map (notes and notations) Seminar / Presentations All the work, both the City Walks and the following weeks assignment will happen on the 11 th and 18 th of September, according to separate schedule.
