Reviews basic statistics, distribution of profit and loss in partnerships, distribution of corporate dividends, simple interest, present value, bank discount notes, multiple payment plans, compound interest, annuities, sinking funds, and amortization. Online - Weekly. Learning Outcomes: 1. Define, identify and calculate the mean, the weighted mean, median and the mode. 2. Prepare a frequency distribution, bar graph, line graph and circle graph. 3. Calculate price relatives and cost comparisons. 4. Define, explain and calculate the range and standard deviation. 5. Estimate percentage of data by using standard deviations. 6. Calculate simple interest and maturity value. 7. Using the interest formula, calculate the unknown value when the other two (principal, rate or time) are given. 8. Identify the steps and complete the proper interest credits under the U.S. Rule. 9. Differentiate between interest-bearing and non-interest-bearing notes 10. Calculate bank discount and proceeds for simple discount notes. 11. Calculate & compare the interest, maturity value, proceeds and effective rate of a simple interest note with a simple discount note. 12. Explain and calculate the effective rate for a Treasury bill. 13. Calculate the maturity value, bank discount and proceeds of discounting an interestbearing note before maturity. 14. Identify and complete the four steps of the discounting process. 15. Define and compare simple interest with compound interest. 16. Calculate the compound amount and interest both manually and by lookup table.
17. Explain and compute the effective rate (APY). 18. Compare present value (PV) with compound interest (FV). 19. Compute PV by using lookup table and check answer by compounding. 20. Differentiate between contingent annuities and annuities certain. 21. Calculate the PV and FV of an ordinary annuity both manually and using lookup table. 22. Compare the calculation of the PV of a lump sum versus the PV of an ordinary annuity. 23. Find periodic payments and calculate the payment made at the end of each period using a lookup table. 24. Determine the cost of installment buying by: (1) calculating the amount financed, finance charge and deferred payment; (2) calculate the estimated APR using a lookup table; (3) calculate monthly payments by formula and lookup table. 25. Determine the effects of paying off installment loans before the due date by calculating the rebate and payoff for the Rule of 78. 26. Calculate finance charges on revolving charge credit card accounts. 27. Define the types of mortgages available. 28. Prepare an amortization schedule and using an amortization chart compute monthly mortgage payments. 29. Calculate the total cost of interest over the life of a mortgage. 30. Calculate and identify the interest and principal portion of each monthly payment. 31. Read and explain stock, mutual fund, and bond quotations. 32. Calculate dividends of preferred and common stocks and calculate return on investments (ROI). 33. Compare bond yields to bond premiums and discounts. 34. This class will utilize Blackboard IM (my Blackboard IM ID dapperson14) to allow for Homework assistance, and test proctoring (Required - 2 Proctored tests for Online classes should students desire to take tests online). If you prefer you can use the FAC and LGC Campus Testing Centers to complete the required 2 Proctored tests for Online classes (familiarize yourself with their hours prior to the week of a test). All Students are required to show participation by completing assignments on the due dates and time established in the attached Course Activities and Assignments Section of this Part of the Syllabus. Online course attendance is recorded by the student logging into and working within the Blackboard. Academic Dishonesty Course Specific The penalty for academic dishonesty in this course is defined in Part B of this Syllabus. Course Plan for College Closing: When the college closes, this course continues on its regular schedule because it is an online course. If you are unsure of the schedule review the attached Course Activities and Assignments Section. All Assignments dates have been made with consideration for College Closing Days. Electronics (e.g. Cell Phones) /Food Classroom Policy: As an online course there are no cell phone or food classroom policies. (Email: Students, faculty, and staff of Germanna Community College must use GCC email for all official college communications. This includes course-related communications between students and faculty. If you need help accessing your student email account please visit the ACC on either campus. As faculty, we cannot respond to email from your private email provider. This is being done for both security and privacy reasons. Please look at the instructions for automatically forwarding email from your VCCS student email account. Technology Requirement: Regardless of whether or not you are enrolled in an Internet based class, technology will be an integral part of all classes. Students should have access to a computer system and, at minimum, Microsoft Office software. The college provides access via the Academic Computer Center and limited computers in the library. If students are not familiar with using a personal computer, they should enroll in IST117 as one of their first classes. Additional Resources: All classes will require that students use resources other than the textbook to be successful. This includes, but is not limited to, a familiarity with current events via various media. Online classes include additional content beyond the book via BLACKBOARD in the Course Information Section and Assignment Section. This provides links to related articles, practice quizzes and additional conceptual information. In addition, if your textbook purchase included a student study or work guide, it must be used in order to fully grasp the concepts of Internet classes. Additionally, each student must register for a McGraw Hill Connect account. Additionally, for Online communication it is required that each student registers for a Blackboard IM account and provide the account information to the course instructor.
Distance Education Syllabus Addendum To Students: The college is now requiring that at least two assessment exercises be in a proctored environment. This means that the homework/quiz/test/exam must be taken in either the testing center, a pre-arranged group session with the instructor or in the presence of a pre-approved proctor. There is, however, another alternative which some of you may find viable. If you have a webcam attached to your computer, you can now take advantage of Virtual Verification and Observation Technology (VVOT). This will allow you to take even the proctored assignments from your normal location (work, home, etc.) in much the same way you will take un-proctored assessments. I will be able to use your broadcast video cam image to both verify your photo ID (required) and to observe you during the completion of the computer based testing. This is not for every test! We are only required to proctor two assessments, of your choice. In order for this to work, all members of the class will need to Blackboard IM account. In this way, I can easily add all students to my Blackboard list and create a group specific to this class. Blackboard IM is free so there is no cost to the student. Even if you don t have a webcam, I encourage you to register with Yahoo since you will be able to IM me during my online office hours if you need an immediate answer to a question. Assuming you are using this for the proctoring requirements, the student is responsible for insuring the compatibility of their webcam with Blackboard IM. FYI, I bought two Logitech webcams under $49.00 so they have gotten extremely inexpensive. When you decide to take a proctored test/exam during regular online office hours (5-7PM Mondays, other times must be coordinated with the instructor and arranged by the student), I will already be online and will be notified that a group member has joined. At this point, you will need to give permission to transmit your webcam to me. I will IM you back that I ve got a video feedback from you. You will then need to present your ID to the camera (must be a Germanna or government approved photo ID). If using an ID with your social security number on it, feel free to block that number. You will need to hold it up to the camera for about five seconds to make sure the feed comes through. Upon notification that I have verified your identity, you are free to start the test on Connect/Blackboard. All my homework/tests are on blackboard or Connect are open book, open note, calculator allowed. The only requirement is that no other parties can assist you in the taking of the test/exam. During the test you can Minimize your Blackboard IM box. The video will still be transmitted, I will observe you taking the test/exam and then upon completion, I will verify the successful submission to blackboard or Connect, you may then disable your permission for me to view your webcam. Again, all students are required to register with Blackboard for the IM service, webcam or not, so that you can get instant access to me if needed. If you plan on using the webcam feature to
proctor your test/exam, please send me an email to that effect at the beginning of the semester. If you are not using the webcam method, there is appropriate documentation in each campus testing center to take any of the computer based tests in that environment. The testing center will also require a photo ID so please have it with you. Again, it does not matter which two assessments are proctored. I do suggest you get this out of the way early to avoid any last minute rush and a potential lack of sufficient computers in the testing center (they only have three) towards the end of the semester. I will periodically check with them on who has been in for proctoring and who has not. If you have any questions about these proctoring requirements, contact me immediately! If we get to the end of the semester and you have not met the proctoring requirements, you will receive an incomplete in the class and will need to repeat the entire class (and pay for it all over again). If a sufficient number of students are lacking one proctored assignment at the end of the semester, I will probably conduct the final exam on campus for those needing it but please try to avoid this
Grading Policy and Grading Scale: Online Homework and Test: Students who e-mail me Monday Thursday will ordinarily receive a response within 24 hours. Students who e-mail me Friday Sunday may expect a response by 5 pm on Monday. All projects that are completed and received by the due date will be graded and returned to the student within 7 days. Students are expected to retain an electronic copy of all work submitted. If transmission of the work fails, participants are expected to resend the document under directions of the instructor. Projects will be submitted in Blackboard either through a discussion thread or via the assignment features. Participants are expected to verify their own Blackboard responses by returning to the appropriate place in Blackboard after the work has been posted. Grading Scale : A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70 79% D 60 69% F < 60% Grading Schema: Homework 25% Test # 1 25% Test # 2 25% Test # 3 25% Total 100% Additional policies concerning assignments and test administration: 1. Assignments are due on the date and time identified in the Course Activities & Assignments Section below. 2. Late assignments will be penalized 10 Points after the due date and time has passed (no excuses) 3. Late assignments will not be accepted after a one week grace period with the student receiving a zero for that assignment. 4. Students who may have to miss a test must notify the instructor before the test is given. The legitimacy of such situations will be left solely to the discretion of the instructor. 5. Students are expected to read required/assigned material and complete all assignments. 6. Students must turn in all assignments to get a passing grade for the course.
