Background & objectives + SRG, an Impellam Group company, is a resourcing company dedicated to the science, clinical and engineering sectors. SRG have sponsored the New Scientist Salary Survey in previous years in order to promote the brand, most recently in 2012. There was a requirement to do so again in 2013. + The results of the salary survey is fed into the Careers Guide, published around the turn of the year. + In terms of objectives, research was required among scientists to raise the profile of SRG and provide editorial content for the Careers Guide. Research Objectives More specifically research was required to + Quantify the salaries & bonuses received by scientists + Measure any changes year on year + Measure the benefits received by scientists as part of their remuneration package

How was the research conducted? + In order to provide a robust sample for the study, research took the form of a quantitative online survey conducted amongst over 5,400 scientists. + Results are shown on those answering each question. + A New Scientist / Jobs / SRG branded email was sent to a sample drawn from the New Scientist general & jobs database inviting potential respondents to take part in the online questionnaire. An overlay went on the New Scientist jobs page & on the careers pages of New Scientist. It was also promoted via the New Scientist team on Twitter and in newsletters. + Scientists in North America and Europe have been included in the analysis. + Fieldwork, data processing and analysis took place in September & October 2013.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Executive Summary - UK + The average salary is 32,960 down from 35,900 in 2012. + On average those working in University / Education & Industry earn above average. + The average pay rise received is 1.83%, up on 2012 when it was 1.6%. + 46% were eligible to receive an annual bonus and the average received is 2,270. + 4% rate their current employer as excellent overall.

Executive Summary - Europe + The average salary in Europe is 39,260 (down from 39,460 in 2012). + The region with the highest salary in Europe is in Germany ( 46,235). + The average last salary increase was +0.61%. + 42% were eligible for an annual bonus and the average received is 3,195. + 10% of respondents have been made redundant in the last 12 months. Executive Summary - North America + The average salary in North America is $72,470 (down from $73,910 in 2012). + The region with the highest salary in North America is California ($83,230) + The average last salary increase was 1.8%. + 36% were eligible to receive an annual bonus and the average received is $5,550. + 10% of respondents have been made redundant in the last 12 months.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Summary - UK + The average salary is 32,960 down from 35,900 in 2012. 49% earn over 30,000 a year, compared with 58% in 2012. + On average those working in University / Education ( 34,925) & Industry ( 33,235) earn above average, and more than those in independent charities ( 32,085), government agencies ( 31,910), medical ( 30,610), and contract research organisations ( 30,300). + On average those based in Greater London ( 37,045) are on the highest salaries, followed by those in the North East ( 35,540) and in the South East ( 35,500). + The average pay rise received is 1.83%, down on 2012 when it was 1.6%. + 46% were eligible to receive an annual bonus (40% in 2012) and the average received is 2,270 ( 2,679 in 2012). + 6% of respondents have been made redundant in the last 12 months. + Contributory pensions are the most common benefit (60%) followed by the ability to work from home occasionally (31%), a health plan (27%) and flexi-time (27%). + The benefit that most would like to receive is paid overtime (12%), followed by a performance related bonus (12%), a guaranteed bonus (11%) and a final salary pension scheme (9%). + A third of the sample indicate a preference to work for small / medium sized organisations. + 4% rate their current employer as excellent overall.
