Introduction The goal of animal and human protection in animal facilities has been achieved over the years through the development of a number of barrier systems. Animals are isolated within sealed buildings in positive, HEPA filtered air pressure mode, eating sterilized diets, living on sterilized bedding substrates and drinking microbiologically clean water. On the other side, laboratory personnel wear PPE after cleansing SOPs, carefully handling animals to limit stress and any risk of contamination. Most of these barrier systems are still successfully operating and certainly the general concept of treating materials for subsequent introduction into clean areas, protecting people and animals by means of appropriate clean apparel, showering devices, caging barrier systems etc. have all evolved dramatically over the last 20 years. Air Shower The modern Safe Barrier may differ radically in terms of design, procedures and technologies made available by the industry thanks the development of equipment that has helped to improve the working environment, contributing to safer procedures and more flexible, easier ways of working. An example of the revolution that has come about in animal facilities is the innovative use of air showers as a possible alternative to water shower systems. This is really a consequence of a reduced risk of contamination from animals for technicians and investigators working in the barriered units, thanks the introduction of IVC systems and appropriate cage handling procedures. But important changes have occurred also in terms of safer chemical substances made available to disinfect heat sensitive materials whose efficacy is comparable to that of formaldehyde but with the advantage of a negligible toxicity. Decon-Locks and Pass-Through cabinets have been purposely designed to work efficiently with hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide gas and other chemicals, making it possible to disinfect large loads in a time as low as 90 minutes. Personnel protection from micro-organisms and allergens, animal protection from infective agents, improvement of the working environment, faster and more efficient disinfection processes, are all the result of technological changes on both a large and small scale. 1/ AS - Air Shower Safe transfer of operators The Air Shower is a system which allows the access and exit of operators between environments with different levels of contamination by removing polluting powders and particles from operators (or materials) in transit. Higher level of cleanliness: Tecniplast Air Shower features 22 adjustable air nozzles, so that the air flow can be better oriented. The average air velocity is 30 m/s, higher than many other similar products. Cleanability and duration of the product: completely made of stainless steel, resulting in fewer chance of the product to get scratched. Tecniplast provides inner test certifying efficiency in removing particulate contaminants. The Air Shower is designed to be installed between areas with different levels of contamination in order to minimize the amount of particulate contaminants in the clean area. Personnel move through the Air Shower while particulate contaminants are washed off by high velocity HEPA-filtered air jets coming from dedicated nozzles positioned on the sidewalls and the ceiling. 2/Functioning sequence After opening the access door and entering the Air Shower, the washing cycle is activated by pressing a dedicated push botton on the control panel. At the end of the cycle (pre-set cycle duration is 45 seconds but it is easily adjustable according to the customer requirements), the door lock is released, allowing access to the clean area. The duration of the air flow cycle is settable from a minimum of 15 seconds to a maximum of 4 minutes. 3/Air Shower - Main features All exterior and interior Air Shower surfaces are made of AISI 304 scotch brite (for easy cleanability and duration of product). HEPA filter with H14 MPPS efficiency in accordance with EN 1822. Filter access is from the interior ceiling, thus guaranteeing easy access for maintenance. The doors are made of clear anodized aluminium and sound-absorbent safety glass. The interior ceiling includes a fluorescent light that grants optimal and uniform lighting distribution on the inside. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is used to control the sequence of operations of the Air Shower. The main control box with the PLC is positioned on the ceiling of the chamber and it is easy accessible for maintenance by means of an inspection removable panel positioned in the dirty area (no need to pass through the barrier for maintenance). Tempered glass doors provided with electric lock guarantee high visibility and low noise level. Door interlocks are located in the two door-jambs at the entrance and exit ways. The dirty side lock automatically releases in case of power cut loss or when the Emergency Stop button is pressed. The Emergency Stop buttons are located inside the Air Shower and outside on both sides, close to the entrance doors for maximum safety. 1/ PT60 Biosafety Changing Station with Pass-Through Box - Safe transfer of animals In each housing facility, one of the most critical operations is receiving the animals, with the related risks of cross-contamination between clean and dirty side. That s why PT60 has been developed: it is a system allowing the operator to receive animals from a non-controlled environment to a controlled one. During the operations of box transferring carried out with PT60 the box does not have to be sterilized, since the operator on the dirty side just has to open it while it is under laminar flow and the operator on the clean side does not have to touch the box and can put the animal directly into the cage: this allows for great efficiency and quicker operations! PT60 is ideal for managing great volumes of animals with the certainty of a high level of safety and protection! PT60 - Safe transfer of animals1 2/ PT60 - Functioning description The system comprises: 1) a laminar flow pass box (ISO 5 class); 2) a bio-safety cabinet for mouse and rat cage changing. The pass-through box can be positioned on either side of the changing station. The door interlock system prevents loss of pressure balance between two separate environments. Above the pass-through chamber there is a fan that re-circulates HEPA-filtered air and distributes it inside the pass box as a uniform laminar flow, thus creating a barrier between the changing station and the environment. 1) The operator on the dirty side presses the green push button to open the door and slides the transport box containing the animals into the passthrough chamber. 2) The operator on the clean side is allowed to open the chamber on their side and to empty the box only after the door on the dirty area has been closed. 3) Finally, the operator on the dirty side can remove the box. PT60 - Functioning description2 The cabinet can also be used for all cage changing operations.
1/ PTB - Pass Through Box Safe transfer of materials and tools PT60 is designed for animal transfer, but Tecniplast offer is completed by the static interlocking pass-box, designed to transfer materials and working tools between zones with different levels of contamination, while at the same time keeping them separate. The pass-through box is made of AISI 304L scotch bright finished stainless steel panels, with two single 8mm tempered glass doors, directly hinged to the metal structure. Two interlocking electrically operated doors ensures the separation of the two environments. On both sides a green light shows when the door can be opened by pressing the adjacent button. 2/ Functioning description The static pass-box is easy to use: The first operator pushes a button to open the door on side A. The interlocking device automatically keeps the other door on side B locked while the green light on side B goes off. The items are inserted and the first operatorcloses the door. On side B the green light switches on, then the second operator can push the button and open the door to take out the items. In this phase the door on side A is locked and the green light on side A is off.
