2015-2016 Introduction Let s start with the customary: we hope all is well with you this year. We are doing well here and are anxious for you to look through this year s catalog. We have been searching for new varieties to offer you and are really excited by some of the new opportunities for your gardens. Right now we are in the middle of one of the bigger droughts to hit our area in quite some time. The wildfires are making the sunsets somewhat apocalyptic each night. Fortunately, the nursery has a good water system and we are able to keep things in good shape despite the conditions around us. We will soon be back into the rainy season and wondering why it won t ever stop raining! But as strange as it seems given these current conditions, this is the time for planning and strategizing what you are going to do this fall and winter to help your garden grow and evolve. I am a fisherman and I will spend hours and hours tying up hooks and rigging in the fall preparing for the battles with fish during the coming winter and spring. This is the same if gardening is your hobby. Look over your landscape and find those spots in need of freshening and look for what plant will make the statement you have in your dreams. So it does not matter what your passion; prepare and your success rate and enjoyment are always going to improve. We have a couple new plants we want to draw your attention to: Hamamelis Strawberries and Cream is something you need to see. It is a bicolor flower with red purple petals tipped with yellow! Another new offering is strangely appropriate Quercus hypoleucoides. This evergreen oak is beautiful as well as being quite drought tolerant. We are also excited to have Aesulus Erythroblastos. This is a horse chestnut that has bright pink new growth. Finally we have a rhododendron we have not been able to offer until now. Rhododendron Yakushimanum Koichiro Wada FCC. It just might be the best rhododendron we have ever offered. Our plant is 4 feet by 6 feet after 45 years. It has wonderful deep green foliage with spectacular indumentum. As always there are many other new items coupled with many of our long term special plants. We hope you enjoy sorting through and deciding what you are going to do to make them work for you. And now for the corny, annual what are the Gosslers up to. This is a funny item we have considered leaving out; however, we have been told by many people they love the updates, so here we go. I just returned from my annual Alaska adventure. This is the fifth year I have gone and each has been very different and exciting. This year we saw a humpback whale come to the surface and spit out a common murre, a type of diving seabird. So, I would guess, there are not a lot of people out there who have seen a bird fly out of a whale s mouth. We also rescued two men stranded on an island in bad weather so we felt good about doing our maritime duty. Dawn is starting her 25 th year teaching and will be starting the new school year soon. Right now she and her good friend Pam Burns are exploring many new miles of trails on horseback in the coast and the Cascades. Pierce is getting ready to start his senior year in high school. He is in the middle of daily doubles for football and thinking it is a lot of work!! He is really looking forward to basketball this winter. We will be driving to football games and basketball games for the next 6 months. For those of you who remember the picture in the catalog of him standing in the clay pot in the garden as a 2 year old, you would

be surprised to know he is now 6 5 and 230 pounds. His foot won t even fit in the pot anymore! Marj and Roger just booked a trip this winter to Hawaii. Neither Marj nor Roger have ever been to Hawaii, they are looking forward to seeing many new sites. Marj is still golfing and bowling as much as she can. She went to Reno again this year to a bowling tournament with friends and had a great time. Roger is really enjoying the garden coaching. He is getting more appointments all the time. He loves seeing other people s gardens and helping them make their dreams for a beautiful landscape a reality. As for coming events this year, we will be selling at the Hardy Plant Study weekend in June in Salem, Oregon. We will be selling during the event at Seabright Garden. We will also be selling at Xera nursery in Portland this October 10th contact us or Xera nursery in Portland. We also held another successful dinner in the garden this year. This has been a great event and everyone seems to enjoy the opportunity to visit new gardens and enjoy good food and company. Thank you to Nancy Beck and Dave Taplan, Linda Lu and Hearn Moore for opening their gardens. This is held each July and if you want a great evening with some great people then start checking our website gosslerfarms.com for details or just contact us here at the nursery for dates and times. Check with us early spring as this event has been known to fill up. We always like to thank those in our lives that help make our business and personal lives better. Wayne Headlee is a wonderful neighbor and a great worker in the nursery. We are lucky to have him. Lisa Sebright works part time in the office and does most of the counting for inventory. Lisa helps greatly in taking some of the typing load off of Marj in the office. And finally, every year we need another set of eyes to look at the catalog for us and Diana Learner has been proofing the catalog for years she helps us put out a much better product for you to thumb through. Thank you Diana for your continued support and help. Enjoy your planting season: Eric Gossle Marj Gossler Eric Gossler Roger Gossler Marj Gossler

We found out about a new weeping styrax japonica several years ago discovered by an Oregon nurseryman who grows thousands of seedlings. Occasionally a new interesting plant pops up. This excellent plant will grow upright with a terminal leader; but all the stems are strongly weeping. We have seen trees that are less the 2' wide. The flowers are the typical white stars in May and June. We only have a small supply available; so that's the reason for the high price. 2 gal. $ 80.00 S. Also, makes a fine container specimen. 2 gal. $ 26.00 TROCHODENDRON The Japanese Wheel Tree. Trochodendron is a small evergreen tree of subtle beauty. Plants, pricing and shipping... We really care about our plants, customers, and pricing and, therefore, we address these issues here: In general, 1 gallon plants are 6"-18", 2 gallon plants are 18"-24", and 3 gallon plants are 24"-36". Most of our plants are grafted or cutting grown from our own stock plants, so we know the correct variety. We also feel that it is better to have cultivars or known varieties than seedlings. The plants we list have been at the nursery for a least one season, and our catalog is based on plants in stock at press time. We list plants only when we have at least 10 of a variety and try to indicate when so few are available. From our garden and others we choose only the finest most adaptable plants. Since we are small and don't have a large staff, we can't handle having thousands of varieties of plants for sale. We put our plants through an evaluation process in our garden. So when you make a choice you know we have already grown that plant in our own garden and found it has more beautiful flowers, foliage, fruit, hardiness, etc. than other varieties we have tried. As to price, a difficult decision, we try to be fair so not just the wealthy can afford the plants (we are collectors, too). In many cases there are no other sources to compare cost, so difficulty in acquisition, propagation, container growing, as well as other nursery costs must come into play. Shipping times are between October and December and again February into early May while the plants are in dormant state. We are always watching the weather across the country to try to ship the orders so they arrive in good condition. We do not bare root plants, but do reduce the earth ball to lighten the ship weight while still keeping soil with the roots. Plants are tied into plastic bags, then tied into cardboard cartons, thus greatly limiting loss. We'll try to meet your shipping date request, but our schedules, weather, etc. may affect our ability to do this. In spring, please be patient as we get snowed under with orders so sometimes it takes until mid May to catch up with the orders. We reserve the plants ordered and charge credit cards when the plants are shipped, as we are able to reconcile plants, packing, and shipping charges. If we have not answered some of your questions, feel free to call. Re: Your want lists - Often there are plant varieties available in numbers too few to list here. TERMS This catalog applies to Fall 2015 and Spring 2016, shipping: PLEASE ORDER FROM THE CURRENT CATALOG ONLY. Customers will automatically receive our new catalog each fall. Since certain varieties are often in limited supply, customers find that by placing their order in the fall for fall or spring shipping we can better ensure availability and choice of size. Please offer suggested substitutes, though we don't substitute unless instructed. PLANTS ARE TAGGED AS ORDERS ARE RECEIVED, therefore earliest orders receive first choice of plants...first come, first served. PAYMENT WITH ORDER PLEASE... WE NOW ACCEPT VISA OR MASTERCARD, and do not charge the card until the time of the shipment. We ship earth balls reduced to a minimum in a plastic bag. We do not practice bare root shipping due to severe shock. We will substitute smaller sizes of your suggested substitutes if necessary and refund balance. Shipments are made when plants are dormant from October to March (primarily October 15 to December 15 and February 15 to early May). We refuse to ship if we deem soft growth too advanced for sustained crated containment and refund customer's money. We advise midwestern and eastern customers who receive plants in Spring in dormant condition, and then unpack and hold plants in lighted basement, garage, or cool greenhouse until danger of severe frost is past. Shipping: We ask the customer to state choice of carrier, but be receptive to alternative suggestions. Plants become the property of the customer upon delivery to the transportation company and we cannot be responsible for loss, damage, or delay. Claims for damage in transit should be made to the carrier (not the driver). Save all packing materials and contents. Please include street address, telephone number, and any other pertinent information to aid in delivery. REGARDING PACKING AND SHIPPING CHARGES: In the effort to simplify the terms of shipping, 20% for shipments west of the Mississippi River -or 30% east of the Mississippi River, which will include the packing and prepaid ground UPS or Parcel Post. This cost (20% or 30% has been reviewed and turns out to be almost exactly the price we charged in the past for packing and ground shipping). If you wish 2nd day air UPS, 3rd day select UPS, we will charge 10% packing plus shipping at cost. If you request 2 nd or 3rd day shipping you will be billed after the order is shipped for the actual cost of shipping. There has been some confusion in the past and we want to be clear that the 10% only covers the packing portion. We are unable to determine the actual shipping cost until we have shipped the order. You will receive a bill for just the shipping cost following the delivery of your order. All orders will be subject to a minimum of $10.00 for packing and shipping. Plants are guaranteed true to name and are carefully selected quality plants. Our plants are regularly inspected by the Oregon Agriculture Department. Since we cannot control planting or growing conditions after shipment, we cannot be responsible for loss. We can supply a wholesale catalog upon request to nurseries and landscapers. GARDEN COACHING OPPORTUNITY Roger has been offering coaching services to those who want assistance with their gardens. This service comes with a 10% discount on all plants purchased for the next month after the visit. Roger will offer design ideas and counseling along with suggestions on what plants will work best in your particular situation. He can also perform plant identi cation for those plants already in your landscape. Each visit will be followed by a written list of instructions and he will always be available for follow up here at the nursery. The following is provided graciously by one of his current clients. Inviting Roger into our garden to be a garden coach was one of our best horticultural investments. He has an almost endless amount of information regarding plant growth and habit. His depth and knowledge on what to plant where, why, when and how was a great help to us. And, perhaps most important, it was wonderful fun. A visit from Roger would leave us quite excited about new plant possibilities. In a few words and wild hand gestures, he could turn an ugly shady corner bed into a colorful hydrangea planting that would be beautiful and hide the shed wall and fence. We will continue to use the garden coach service and we know that each visit from Roger will be enjoyable and full of new information. Sincerely, Nancy Beck and Dave Taplin If you are interested in Roger s services please contact us and we have a brochure explaining all the details. Also feel free to call and talk to Roger anytime and he can set up a visit.
