Loughborough University Deployment of Cisco Physical Security Case Study Presented by Dave Temple Assistant Director IT Services
Agenda Requirement Initial Solution Deployed Initial Project Delivery Experience to date Q&A 2
Requirement In the beginning IT Services 24/7 PC Labs Anti-social behaviour Theft of equipment Wanted CCTV for Public Safety and Crime Prevention Central Recording Monitoring and control by Security (not us!) Existing Analogue System (not good!) 3
Requirement Other Developments New Halls of Residence PFI Development 25 IP Cameras already bought (DVTel) No recording or monitoring! Extensive new building programme Aspirations for 2012 4
Requirement Technical IP Solution Big Campus (433 acres) Dedicated fibre/copper too expensive Strategy of Convergence Camera/Encoder agnostic avoid lock in avoid multiple DVR types Expand at our own speed Easy to manage (IT Services) Easy to use (Security Team) 5
Requirement Why Cisco? Designed for the IP Network Supports a large selection of IP camera/encoder manufacturers Per camera licence scheme Runs on commodity servers running Linux Easy to use web interface It s Cisco 6
Initial Solution Deployed Cisco Video Surveillance Media Server (VSMS) Used to record images Video Surveillance Virtual Matrix Server (VSVM) Joins together the images to produce displays Video Surveillance Operations Manager (VSOM) Provides a web interface for viewing and management Video Surveillance Virtual Matrix Client (VSVMC) Turns a PC into a dedicated matrix screen Can all be separate or co-resident Can be via appliance or your own server 7
Initial Solution Deployed (Nov 2008) 10 New Cisco Cameras in 24/7 PC Labs 25 existing DVTel cameras in new Halls Single SUSE Linux Server Disk storage on SAN 1 Virtual matrix screen in Security Gatehouse 1 Web based Operations Manager PC in Security Gatehouse 8
Initial Solution Deployed (Nov 2008) Security Gatehouse CCTV Cameras Matrix (VSVMC) Operations (VSOM Web) X 35 Network IT Services Data Centre VSM Server Fibre Channel (FC) Storage Area Network Disk Storage 9
Initial Project Delivery We were pioneers in the UK Quadrants first Cisco VSM install Support largely from Cisco US We supplied the server and OS Quadrant installed the Cisco VSM software after a slight false start Quadrant installed the 10 Cisco Cameras very fast We added in the 25 DVTel Cameras not so fast 10
What has changed (as of Oct 2010) We now have ~120 cameras on the system and growing rapidly!... Including PTZ Abandoned use of SAN for storage 3 servers rather than 1 More IP camera diversity (Cisco, DVTel, Axis) Analogue Gateways (Cisco & Axis) 11
Configuration Today (Oct 2010) Security Gatehouse CCTV Cameras Matrix (VSVMC) Operations (VSOM Web) X 120 Network IT Services Data Centre VSOM & VSVM Server 2x VSMS Servers (96 Tbyte Capacity) 12
Experience to date It works! Security liked initial implementation, however......120 cameras via a Web Browser is not ideal!...ptz operation has some latency issues Needs specialist Control Room Software (and a new control room to put it in) Server Software pretty reliable under normal operation Not all IP Cameras & Encoders are created equal Not all installers are created equal either! Need for Network QoS quite apparent for larger streams and PTZ operation 13
Related Developments Loughborough Services Working Together agenda Physical Access Control upgrade under way ( 500k project) G4Tec Symmetry Proposed Major Network Refresh Move to VoIP/IPT for telephony Proposed move of Security Control Room (need to accelerate change) Need for integration of other systems (BMS, Two way Radio, alarms etc) Loughborough to host Team GB & Japan in run up to London 2012 14
A few things to take away We find that in house management of the Cisco VSM system is practical However camera installations are best left to the professionals (choose installer wisely!) Get exact camera requirements into building plans up front Think about why you are installing cameras as well as how You need to get IT, Estates, and Security all cooperating to make this work Big benefits from doing this 15
