Songs that Relate to Life A number of years ago, Stevie Wonder produced an album titled: Songs in the Key of Life. I have always loved this title and throughout my life have tied music to the ebb and flow of life. As a young man I played music and came to appreciate its powerful effect. In an effort to expand out thinking (and feeling) about full and inclusive community, I have assembled a number of songs and poems that we will listen to and look at to supplement and compliment this presentation. Please hold on to these lyrics and when we move into a concept that is relevant we will listen to the music or review the poem. These are truly Songs (and poems) in the Key of Life. You Get What You Give The New Radicals Wake up kids We've got the dreamers disease Age 14 we got you down on your knees So polite, you're busy still saying please Fri-enemies, who when you're down ain't your friend Every night we smash their Mercedes-Benz First we run and then we laugh till we cry But when the night is falling and you cannot find the light, light If you feel your dreams are dying Hold tight You've got the music in you Don't let go You've got the music in you One dance left This world is gonna pull through Don't give up You've got a reason to live Can't forget we only get what we give Give it to me now! Four a.m. we ran a miracle mile were flat broke but hey we do it in style The bad rich God's flying in for your trial (chorus) This whole damn world can fall apart You'll be ok, follow your heart You're in harms way I'm right behind Now say you re mine (chorus) Fly high What's real can't die You only get what you give Just don t be afraid to live Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying Fake computer crashes dining Cloning while they're multiplying Fashion mag shoots with the aid of 8 dust brothers Beck, Hanson Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson You're all fakes Run to your mansions Come around We'll kick your ass in! Don't let go One dance left

What A Wonderful World Louis Armstrong I see trees of green, red roses too I see them bloom for me and you And I think to myself, what a wonderful world I see skies of blue and clouds of white The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night And I think to myself, what a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people going by I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?" They're really saying "I love you" I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll ever know And I think to myself, what a wonderful world Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world Oh yeah
No Such Thing John Mayer "welcome to the real world" she said to me condescendingly "take a seat, take your life plot it out in black and white" well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings and the drama queens I'd like to think the best of me is still hiding up my sleeve they love to tell you "stay inside the lines" but something's better on the other side I want to run through the halls of my high school I want to scream at the top of my lungs I just found out there's no such thing as the real world just a lie you've got to rise above so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers they read all the books but they can't find the answers all of our parents, they're getting older I wonder if they've wished for anything better while in their memories, tiny tragedies they love to tell you "stay inside the lines" but something's better on the other side I want to run through the halls of my high school I want to scream at the top of my lungs I just found out there's no such thing as the real world just a lie you've got to rise above I am invincible I am invincible I am invincible as long as I'm alive I want to run through the halls of my high school I want to scream at the top of my lungs I just found out there's no such thing as the real world just a lie you've got to rise above I just can't wait for my ten year reunion I'm gonna bust down the double doors and when I stand on these tables before you you will know what all this time was for
Imagine John Lennon Imagine there's no heaven, It's easy if you try, No hell below us, Above us only sky, Imagine all the people living for today... Imagine there's no countries, It isn t hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, No religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace... Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can, No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man, Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say I m a dreamer, but I m not the only one, I hope some day you'll join us, And the world will live as one.
Like a Seed Kenny Rankin All of the people, look at the children Play in the morning sun All of the people, look at the children Wishing that they were one There s a feeling that s lying here sleeping Like a seed in the earth There s a new day, a new day And a new way We re all going to rise together We re all going to fly forever Over all the shining cities And they ll be nothing left to hide All will be known We re going home going home Going home, going home And I got to say that I m on my way Going home Sometime when this feeling arises And everything is too much in place There s no room to move And nowhere to run We just got to keep our soul s free We just got to live and let it be Lord will trust our sisters and brothers They ll be nothing left to hide All will be known Cause we re going home going home And I got to say That I m on my way And I m going home
IF By Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowances for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don t deal in lies, Or being hated, don t give way to hating, And yet don t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream and not make dreams your master; If you can think and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: Hold on! If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run Yours is the Earth and everything that s in it, And which is more you ll be a Man, my son!
Beyond Difference By Al Condeluci We look, see, examine Life around us As mosaic dimensions abound Our differences are stark In size, shape and color Varied experiences clear differences We seek to understand Yet often fear Differences we see far apart from me Often we flee So we move to find similar In others to us comparisons that comfort To put us at ease a need to please And the gap abounds Us from them kept apart Us from them Yet what are differences You from me A color, a movement, a history More, what do we share You and me where are we now Where do we go To get beyond differences We need to feel Similarity, kinship, fraternity You become me Similarities connect They bond, they blend They override differences You are me So go now and find yourself In others
The Bridgebuilder By William O Goggle An old man traveling on a lone highway Came at the evening cold and gray To a chasm vast and deep and wide The old man crossed in the twilight dim The sullen stream held no fear for him But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man said a fellow pilgrim near You are wasting your time with building here You will never again pass this way Your journey will end at the close of the day. You have crossed the chasm deep and wide Why build you this bridge at even tide? The builder lifted his old gray head Good friend in the way that I ve come, he said, There follows after me this day, A youth whose feet must pass this way. This stream which has been nothing to me, To the fair haired youth might a pitfall be. Yes, he too must cross in the twilight dim, Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.
