STILLWATER BILLINGS CLINIC Job Description Medical Technologist General Description: The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing high complexity clinical laboratory testing in one or more sections of the laboratory with full responsibility for quality control and quality assurance in accordance with CLIA regulatory requirements and standards. Medical Technologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Medical Technologist reports to the Department Supervisor. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Nationally registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Technologist. 2. Current or eligible for Montana State licensure as a Medical Technologist or ability to become licensed within three (3) months of employment. 3. CPR Certification for health care providers. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Supports and practices the mission and philosophy of Stillwater Billings Clinic and department/service. 2. Collects high complexity test specimen analysis according to established policies and procedure. 3. Performs high complexity test specimen analysis according to established policies and procedures. 4. Evaluates, interprets and validates high complexity test data prior to reporting. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or immediately notify the laboratory s established policies and procedures whenever testing systems are not within the laboratory s defined acceptable levels of performance. 5. Maintains daily operations of the laboratory/department to include, but not limited to calibration and maintenance of equipment; maintains adequate working inventory. Adheres to quality control procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory s established performance specifications. 6. Utilize performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality.
7. Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments relevant to job performance. 8. Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization. WORKING CONDITIONS Normal laboratory environment May be required to work varying shifts, weekends, or holidays May float to other areas to assist with staffing needs Blood Borne Pathogen Category: Category I: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body, fluids or tissues. Knowledge Minimum qualifications Experience Analytical Skills Interpersonal Skills Medical Technologist Laboratory: Proficient in phlebotomy procedures to include a variety of draw sites and collection scenarios encompassing all age groups, specimen preparation, timing of tests and physician preferences. Specimen analysis; evaluating, interpreting and validating data for reports Nationally registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Technologist Current or eligible for Montana State licensure as a Medical Technologist CPR Certification for Health Care Providers No prior experience required Analytical skills necessary to understand and resolve routine operating problems within scope of licensure. Analytical skills necessary to perform specimen analysis according to established policies and procedures Analytical skills necessary to evaluate, interpret and validate data prior to reporting Interpersonal skills which enable the incumbent to appropriately respond to a variety of patient/family requests and inquiries, to respond to inquiries from physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers and to check for understanding, allay apprehension and enlist the cooperation of the patient. Ability to deal with difficult situations in a mature and professional manner.
Medical Technologist Cross-training May be required to float to various departments and branch locations to fulfill staffing needs Technical Skills Quality Control/Assurance Full responsibility for review of quality control and Levey Jennings, trends shifts. Monitors and documents quality assurance indicators and interprets root cause analysis (RCA) for test variances and controls. Works on process improvements for patient care. Proficiency Testing Review proficiency and initiate corrective action as appropriate Maintenance Log Review Ensures all equipment maintenance is being documented appropriately. Sign off for equipment calibrations. Complaint Management Reviews and troubleshoots problems that may arise and reports information as appropriate to Laboratory Leadership Team Competency Testing Completes yearly competency testing on staff and conducts phlebotomy training Compliance Reviews and reports compliance issues that may arise. Participates in Independent Judgment maintaining safety manual for the laboratory. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with regulatory requirements, established policies and procedures and general directives. Assumes responsibility for initiating follow-up to prevent and/or resolve problem scenarios and coordinates with the appropriate department and/or person. Expected to prioritize all aspects of job. Supervision of Others Fiscal Responsibility On-call Responsibility Medical Technologist Provides daily operational oversight to the phlebotomy staff Participates in the financial viability of Billings Clinic by ensuring appropriate utilization of supplies and equipment and maximizing the flow of patients. Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals and standards of care. Participates in on-call rotations for laboratory responsibilities as needed.
