USING THE SCIENCEDIRECT MARC RECORDS PROGRAM 17 Common Questions and Challenges Why don t you send my records automatically? Not everyone wants MARC records. We now include instructions for ordering with your activation notification There are extra (bad) URLs in the 856 field Extra URLs exist in the WorldCat record OCLC tries to strip out URLs that don t belong but has trouble if they include the ScienceDirect.com domain There are duplicate records in the.mrc file We believe this problem is fixed. It was caused by an error in our holdings reports Can you deliver UNI-MARC format? No Can we add customized notes or delete fields? Yes, for Collections order only Why does it take so long to get my records Typically OCLC can supply records the same day if they exist Creating records for large new collections, especially Legacy collections, can take several months Can we redistribute the records under Creative Commons? No. The records are OCLC s intellectual property Where do I get help or report problems? If you got the wrong records contact the Elsevier Help Desk If the data in the records are wrong contact OCLC Customer Support support@oclc.org
USING THE SCIENCEDIRECT MARC RECORDS PROGRAM 18 Plans for Automated Delivery Based on KBART Holdings Reports Part of a larger data sharing project Customers opt-in to allow selected third parties (OCLC) to download their holdings info in KBART2 format If you sign up for automatic MARC delivery service OCLC checks your holdings periodically OCLC tracks MARC records they have already sent you OCLC delivers any available records you need but don t already have OCLC will send delete notifications if titles come out of your holdings Advantages Must less work for librarians Great for Front Lists Great for subscription type purchases such as Freedom and Evidence Based Selection Great for book series Disadvantages Based on holdings not sales history, so MARC deliveries won t match invoices in many cases
