Business Resiliency Business Resiliency Combining High Availability and Disaster Recovery for Highly Critical Environments IBM DS8000 Global Mirror Performance Update This session will discuss the concepts and technical details of what are known as 3-site business resilience solutions. It will discuss the business and regulatory issues that are driving the requirements for these solutions and the different datacentre topologies that customers are choosing when implementing them. It will also discuss the two options available for mirroring between the three sites, which we refer to as cascading and multi-target, and give the IBM perspective on the differences between these two options. IBM has two hardware based functions for this type of solution based on the enterprise disk platform: Metro Global Mirror and z/os Metro Global Mirror. The session will cover the high level architecture and capabilities of both of these solutions and the different management software that is available to manage the disk replication function. It will also discuss in some more detail the incremental resynchronization function which is available for both of these solutions and why this type of capability is very important for such solutions. Finally, it will discuss a number of other options and alternatives that are being considered or implemented by customers. These include combining hardware- and software-based replication functionality and the concept of a 4-site solution that is being discussed by some customers with extremely critical applications. This session will present the results of two recently-completed studies using z/os- and AIX-based workloads to study the performance characteristics and robustness of the IBM DS8000 Global Mirror asynchronous remote copy function. The workloads used in the studies were based on data of I/O activity captured at some Fortune 500 customer installations. The hardware configurations are also representative of those found in customer data centers. The studies examined the behavior of Global Mirror under workloads found in typical steady-state operating conditions and additionally the behavior under transient conditions associated with workload spikes, such as the opening 15-minutes of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. A Practical Introduction to Storage Disk Subsystem Performance This session is a technical presentation providing that provides an introduction to the subject of disk subsystem performance for a technical audience. It covers subjects like: application I/O & workload characteristics; hard disk drives (HDD) basics; HDD performance aspects (SATA vs FC disk). It also discusses new trends & directions: solid state drives (SSD); RAID level considerations (RAID-5/6/10); basic principles for planning logical configurations; performance data collection, analysis and modelling. Accelerating Storage Performance with DS8000 and SSDs Solid state disks (SSDs) provide far superior response time and IOPS when compared to traditional HDDs. This presentation will review the performance of DS8000 with SSDs. Results of basic performance benchmarks will be provided. Discussion of performance testing for a production-like SAP Banking workload will be reviewed. Methodologies for intelligently placing "hot" data on SSDs will be discussed. Based on N series Data ONTAP Snapshot capabilities, this session will demonstrate, using a remote facility, how customers can easily benefit from the help of the Snap Manager for Exchange (SME) and Single Mail Box Recovery (SMBR) wizards to produce instant backup and restore of Microsoft Exchange mail databases content, from a single e-mail to the entire database. The objective of this session is to introduce and demonstrate the benefits of using XIV's embedded migration tool to move data from an existing storage to XIV storage system. During this session, an introduction to the XIV's internal migration tool will be provided. Then the benefits of the tool will be explained and demonstrated using a remote demo facility on an AIX DB2 environment. This session will demonstarte the perational efficiency and ease of system management of using XIV in a VMware environment. XIV's efficient snapshot technology enables granular guest OS recovery. The session will describe load simulation and performance monitoring with XIV native tools. Data deduplication currently is a much hyped topic. The presentation will cover the different areas where deduplication makes sense and introduce IBM solutions for these areas. A focus is on data deduplication for the backup environment with IBM TS7650 technology. This session will cover IBM's latest N series release, R16, and current solution integrations.
