HOW EFFECTIVE IS TRICHOLOGY Medical Aspects of Hair Growth By the time an unborn baby reaches 22 weeks old it has already formed, among other things, all of the hair follicles that will cover it for the rest of its life. Of the five million hair follicles on a human body only one hundred thousand reside on the scalp, these follicles spread out over time as the scalp expands during growth. Hair on the scalp grows at an average rate of.3 to.4 mm a day, this means that hair can grow up to around six inches a year. Human hair is unique, in part, because unlike other mammals hair shedding occurs randomly rather than seasonally. Instead the hair growth cycle dictates when healthy hair will be shed. The Anagen phase is the point when hair is most active, it grows at a rate of one centimeter approximately every 28 days, the hair on the scalp stays this active for two to six years. People who have trouble getting their hair to grow longer often have a shorter active period. The hair itself is only alive at the bulb, strangely enough, all visible hair is dead. The part of the hair that is visible is called the shaft and is comprised of three layers, the innermost layer is the medulla, then the cortex and the outer layer is the cuticle. Common Causes of Hair Loss While the most common cause of hair loss is male and female-pattern baldness there are many other conditions that cause hair loss. Among these hormonal factors, medical conditions and some medications can cause abnormal hair loss. The average person looses between 50 and 100 hairs a day, when numbers are greater than that one of these below might be to blame.
