07 Graduates Name: Andy Selby Role: Marketing Analyst Name: Harry Rimmer Role: Operations Development Analyst There are so many great things about working at CFG. Immediately I ve been expected to contribute in meetings with a wide range of experienced staff, which is pretty daunting but really exciting as an analyst. Being able to count Sergio Agüero as a work colleague isn t bad either. Since joining City I ve been working within the City Football Foundation, helping develop the campaign plan for Cityzens Giving, a charitable initiative which gives our fans the power to choose how funds are allocated to youth-led charity football projects around the world. I ve worked closely with the Media & Partnership Sales teams within the London office but have also had a lot of contact with colleagues in Manchester, New York and Melbourne. Office culture The office culture is a half-way house between a start-up and larger global business. A modern, open-plan office means staff can communicate freely and meetings and conference calls with overseas colleagues are a common fixture. Given the international set-up of the organisation, there are frequently new faces visiting from our clubs. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there s a real team mentality. Career ambitions Within five years time I d like to have contributed to growing the profile of City s charitable activities globally, and have had experience of working abroad with one of our international clubs. Typical day 8:45am I arrive in the office and eat breakfast. 9:00am I check my emails and schedule for the day before setting objectives for what I want to get done. 9:15am I crack on with work. Right now I m researching world-class examples of crowdsourcing to help generate some new ideas that the CFG clubs could use. 11:00am I have a conference call regarding Cityzens Giving. I offer suggestions on how best to communicate the campaign s objectives and engage fans. 1:00pm I head out for lunch. There s a massive variety of local food shops around Regent s Place. 2:00pm I return to work. This afternoon I m asked to do some research on a potential Cityzens Giving sponsor. 5:00pm I present the information I ve found on the potential sponsor to my team. I conduct some further research to answer any questions. 6:00pm I finish for the day and head back to watch this evening s game. Being able to count Sergio Agüero as a work colleague isn t bad either Undoubtedly the best thing about working at CFG is the simple fact that I m working in football! Not only that, I m working in football while undertaking stimulating work and developing core skills that will help me in my career. Work in the Operations Development team is project-based across the Group so my work is very varied and I ve been given a lot of responsibility already. I have worked on a variety of projects including a report that will ultimately be presented at a Premier League board meeting. Recently, I ve been working on a proposal to conduct a commercial audit for a football club in an emerging market. Office culture The office culture is great, there s a diverse set of views and debate is encouraged everyone is really friendly. There is a strong work ethic, which is largely because everyone loves what they do. There s also plenty of opportunity for socialising particularly at the end of the week with Burrito Fridays and office FIFA games. Career ambitions My time at City Football Group has reaffirmed my ambition to work in the football industry for as long as possible and be as successful as possible. I don t know where the next few years will take me but I know that right now there s no better place for me to further my career in football than at CFG. Typical day 8:45am I arrive at work and have a quick catch-up with some of my colleagues before checking my emails and schedule for the day ahead. 9:30am I catch up with my colleague Patrick (Operations Development Executive) about objectives for the day and upcoming deadlines. 10:00am I research sponsorship deals and benchmark Manchester City s performance against other major European clubs. This work will feed into the work our team is currently doing on the City Football Group 3-year plan. 12:00pm I have a meeting with Don (Director of Operations Development) about the commercial audit proposal I am working on. We discuss content and style as well as deadlines. 1:00pm I head out to buy some lunch from one of the many food outlets within walking distance from the office before eating in the break-out area with some of the other grads. 2:00pm I review and edit the report I ve been working on for the Premier League board meeting 4:00pm I have a training session on PowerPoint skills, this is part of our formal training programme of 20 skills and content-based sessions that run through our first year at CFG. 6:00pm I send the draft of the Premier League report that I ve been working on to Patrick to review. The office culture is great, there s a diverse set of views and debate is encouraged - everyone is really friendly
09 People Name: Karen Procter Role: Head of Partnerships Operations I am responsible for the team that delivers all of our partner rights, including match day activations, events, branding and player appearances. Career After leaving University, having completed a degree in Sociology, I started my career in offshore banking in Jersey. Whilst working for the bank I held various positions which ultimately led to a role in marketing. When I returned to the UK I worked for a media agency and MCFC became one of my clients. I joined CFG as an MCFC Marketing Assistant in 2006 and was soon promoted to Corporate Marketing Manager. In both these roles I was very involved in the matchdays at the Club and as the Club grew an events department was formed. I progressed at the Club to become Matchday and Events Manager and then Senior Matchday and Events manager. This year I assumed my current role of Head of Partnerships Operations, a new team within the Commercial department. Why City Football Group? I chose to work at City largely due to the people and environment I saw when I account-managed them at the media agency, it had an amazing family feel. The organisation grows and develops at such a pace that there is never a dull moment and I have felt constantly challenged and appreciated. I have also taken part in some great moments in the Club s history from being the person organising the on-pitch celebration the first time we won the Premier League to also attending the World Cup on the club s behalf in 2010. Working at City Football Group is demanding but extremely rewarding and presents some amazing and unique opportunities. With hard work and determination the possibilities at the club are endless and I don t think there are many companies in the world that could say that. The organisation grows and develops at such a pace that there is never a dull moment Name: Carter Daly Role: Media Relations Manager I am one of the Media Relations Managers at New York City FC. I am responsible for cultivating and maintaining the Club s relationship with the football media in New York. I manage everything from the game notes to the media lists and work towards getting the best stories we have to tell in front of the greatest number of people possible. Career For as long as I can remember I wanted to work in professional soccer. I started off writing for various soccer websites when I was in middle school and co-created a soccer blog called Dirty Tackle in high school, which was named as the Top Football Website by The Guardian in 2009. I chose to major in International Relations in college because it was the most soccer sounding major I could find. In the summers I was a social media intern with the New York Cosmos when they were striving to become the second MLS team in the New York area before moving on to other agencies. I had heard rumblings that New York City was to be awarded a Major League Soccer team and immediately focused on how I could help with their efforts. After working with the Club at an agency, I eventually moved internally to manage NYCFC s social media. Working in social media afforded me the opportunity to collaborate with every department as we built towards and throughout our first season in MLS. After several months I was offered the opportunity to move from Marketing to my current role in Communications as Media Relations Manager. Why City Football Group? It has always been my goal to help build a top flight football club in my home of New York City has afforded me the opportunity to do just that along with building a football group on a global scale. As one of ten employees, I was given the opportunity to develop the Club s voice on social media as well as contribute to all other marketing and brand building efforts from the badge and the first kits all the way up to the adverts announcing David Villa and Frank Lampard s arrival in Times Square. The level of collaboration and free flow of ideas in our office has afforded me the opportunity to advance my career whilst following my dreams.
