Why do I need insurance? In accordance with SUNY mandate, all students participating in study abroad/exchange programs affiliated with SUNY are required to be adequately insured. The campus that administers the study abroad program also administers the insurance programs for participants.
How can I be considered adequately insured? You must have comprehensive insurance coverage AND additional coverage for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation that will directly pay benefits to providers abroad There are two ways to be considered adequately insured for a UB Study Abroad Program.
I have insurance with international coverage. In order to receive a waiver, you must have coverage that will directly pay benefits to providers abroad You must purchase a rider (MEDEX) for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage through the Student Medical Insurance Office ($7.40/month)
I don t have insurance. Or you have insurance that will not directly cover you abroad (Medicaid plans, Fidelis, etc.) You can purchase the SUNY International Insurance plan ($40.79/month) Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage is included.
What is medical evacuation and repatriation coverage? Medical Evacuation benefits provide for arrangement and payment of travel and medical costs in the event of serious injury or illness. Some Advice Many private insurance companies only extend minimal coverage to you once you leave the U.S. You will need to contact your insurance company and ask if you have direct benefits abroad. Paying out-of-pocket and seeking reimbursement is NOT considered adequately insured.
Returning to UB If you will be returning to UB as a full time student after study abroad, you will be charged for the Domestic Student Insurance in the Fall Semester. If you do not need the UB insurance plan, you must submit a waiver with proof of insurance to the Student Medical Insurance Office when you return. Waivers must be received by the due date of your first tuition bill.
