Applications Applications Secure Fiber Network Fiber optic cabling provides a greater level of security than copper cabling and is therefore used extensively for military and other data sensitive networks. In this example, Fast Ethernet clients are connected to the core over a pure fiber network using Layer 2 and Layer 3 fiber switches.the Layer 2 edge switches provide additional security through the use of Access Control List (ACL) functionality and IEEE 802.1x that limits access to unauthorized users. AR700 Series Router IP Voice,Video and Data using Power over Ethernet (PoE) In this retail store example, each Point-of-Sale (PoS) counter is connected to the local server over a 54Mbps IEEE 802.11g wireless connection.the store s wireless access points are powered by an Allied Telesis 8600 series PoE switch that also delivers power to IP phones and IP security cameras. Per port QoS capability on the 8600 series switch enables voice packet prioritization. Applications Applications Hospitality Internet Access, IPTV and VoIP Solution In this hospitality example, each hotel room is connected to a central Internet access management system over a dedicated copper connection. Allied Telesis 8600 PoE series switches deliver power to each room where the local gateway provides connectivity for Video-on-Demand video and hotel guest services, Internet access and IP telephones.vlan segmentation and QoS ensure voice, video and data prioritization. PSTN Internet Low-cost Configurable Networks For smaller networks that require some VLAN segmentation and/or QoS capability for traffic prioritization, but do not require traditional network management (SNMP) capability, a Websmart switch provides the necessary functionality at a lower price point. Allied Telesis Websmart switches can be configured using a web browser, but do not provide network performance statistics. Corporate Network AR400 Series Router VLAN 1 GS950 Series Websmart VLAN 2 Satellite TV Video Encoder & VoD Server IP PBX AT-9924T AR700 Series Router with Firewall Internet Connectivity Manager Enterprise Resilience in the SMB In this example a small to medium sized business network provides connectivity to workstations with the 8000S family of stacking switches. A resilient stacking ring topology connects 24 port and 48 port PoE and non-poe switches. Each 8000S also utilizes a Gigabit uplink to a 9400 series switch in the SMB core.the uplinks are aggregated together to create a higher performance uplink that spans all switches in the stack.the result is enterprise class resiliency in the SMB network. Failure of any two links whether they are stacking links, uplinks, or one of each will not result in failed connectivity between the switches and the core. Product Features Allied Telesis switches support a wide range of features. Many of these features provide functionality, whilst others provide network resilience and manageability. Network Management Traffic Segmentation Quality of Service Network Resilience Power over Ethernet Security 10G IPv6 Modularity Network Management The Allied Telesis switch range supports everything from unmanaged to fully manageable switches. Full SNMP Management - fully managed switches provide a range of management capabilities that allow network inspection and monitoring from a central location. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) enabled switches can be routinely interrogated by management software. SNMP can also provide alarms to the network administrator when errors or specific events occur. In addition, the management software can provide useful statistics on the performance and throughput of the network. Websmart - these switches support a web browser interface that allows the network administrator to configure the switch for QoS or other management functions, yet provides an economical solution where full SNMP management is not required. Unmanaged - these switches are simple Plug & Play devices.the LED indicators provide visual status of the network and connected devices.these switches are ideal for small offices and workgroups. Traffic Segmentation In order to isolate network traffic between different workgroups, a network can be segmented into Virtual LANs (VLANs).These VLANs provide all the benefits of separate physical networks allowing secure connectivity for multiple departments over a common physical infrastructure. Within the IEEE standard, Allied Telesis has designed a range of switches with appropriate VLAN support for specific applications from the edge to the core of the network. Quality of Service (QoS) In converged voice, video and data networks or in networks where data traffic includes time critical application data, packet prioritization becomes a key factor in efficient network operations. Packet prioritization can be achieved by having a switch define the Quality of Service (QoS) required by different data streams.voice packets, for example, must be given the highest priority in a converged network in order to produce high-quality, unbroken audio reproduction.voice packets can be given a higher priority and will therefore be forwarded by network devices ahead of less important time-sensitive traffic such as email.the IEEE standard for QoS allows up to eight different levels of prioritization. Network Resilience Many business critical networks deploy devices that are resilient to power and other network-related failures. Redundant power supplies and cooling fans enhance the availability of individual network devices, while UPS and back-up generators protect against power outages. Advanced software features protect against device, port, or cable failures by intelligently re-routing data flows via redundant paths.these features include Spanning Tree, Rapid Spanning Tree, Multiple Spanning Tree and VRRP. Management Features Application Capability Unmanaged LED indicators only Small office Websmart Web-based configuration Small office or workgroup SNMP Configuration Alarms Statistics Medium and larger networks Power over Ethernet (PoE) Power over Ethernet is a mechanism to allow a copper Ethernet cable to provide power as well as data connectivity to a remote device.this device could be a VoIP telephone, a security camera, or a wireless access point. Allied Telesis offer a range of PoE derivatives of our switch products delivering all the switching functionality needed for the nework plus power to PoE capable connected devices. Using PoE devices alleviates the need to provide power at the remote end of the data link. 84 Allied Telesis 85

Product Features Security may improve network services in a number of ways. Security Method MAC Address Intrusion IEEE 802.1x Denial of Service Attack Guest VLANs Application Only allow specific computers to have access to the network. Other computers connected to the network will be blocked. Only allow specific computers or users to have access to the network by comparing the computer/user against known information in an authentication database. have a limited amount of computing power, so bombarding the switch with requests for information can overload a switch, thus giving un-authorized users the chance to by-pass the switches security measures. With DoS protection, a switch can survive these attacks and take appropriate action. Guest VLANs allow organizations to provide hospitable connectivity to visitors without letting them freely roam the network. IEEE 802.1x Authentication This protocol uses an authentication server to store details of each user who has been granted access to the network.the authentication criteria can be a computer MAC address, but can also include IP address, Username and Password etc. Initially, the switch port will be blocked, but when a computer connects, it will be connected only to the authentication server. If the request to access the network is granted, then the switch will be programmed with the necessary details, such as VLAN membership. This type of security simplifies the task of the network administrator, by allowing them to keep all of their security data on a server and not have to program each switch. It has the added benefit of allowing the users to connect to any port on the network. Denial of Service Attack A DoS attack is a hacker s way of by-passing security on a network.the basic premise is to overload the CPU inside the switch, causing the switch to fail in the tasks that it needs to perform. In this vulnerable state, it is then easier for the hacker to gain entry onto the network. that support DoS protection can identify when an attack is taking place, and can then cut off the offending traffic.this maintains the integrity of the remainder of the network. MAC Address Intrusion Every computer and peripheral connected to an Ethernet network has a unique MAC address. that support this level of basic security can be preprogrammed with a list of MAC addresses, and will then only allow computers with MAC addresses which match to an entry in the list to have access to the network. In many cases, the switch can even define which switch port the computer has to be connected to for it to be granted permission to transmit and receive traffic. This type of protection is useful in networks that do not have any remote users, who may change computer, or connect to different switch ports. Guest VLANs with Guest VLAN functionality provide a highly effective means of providing DMZ-like functionality on a Layer 2 network by separating private and public resources. Access to private resources requires successful IEEE 802.1x authentication, but access to public resources (like Internet access) is available to guests who will not successfully authenticate or do not have an IEEE 802.1x client.this allows organizations to provide hospitable connectivity to visitors without letting them freely roam the network. Many vendors claim that their switches are stackable. How to spot a phony stacking claim Any use of the word 'clustering' means phony stacking Phony stacking is when you have to give up your uplink port in order to stack Phony stacking is the daisy chain 'stack' configuration Phony stacking is having to log in to each switch in the 'stack' to configure features Phony stacking is being unable to extend features across all units in the stack Phony stacking means your stacking interfaces operate at the same speed as your main ports Phony stacking will result in 'stack' downtime if the master switch experiences a problem Phony stacking will not allow you to hot-swap a switch into the 'stack' and have the network configuration automatically loaded That s often a phony claim. 8000S series product migration The new AT-8000S stackable switches replace the original AT-8000 family and better meet the needs of small and medium-sized companies.
