S Y L V A, N O R T H C A R O L I N A Last updated 2/21/06 PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING CENTER Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) The North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training is a State accredited program designed to prepare entry level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills to become certified police officers and deputy sheriff s. The course is comprised of thirty-three separate blocks of instruction. The Commission mandated course, upon completion, will enable the graduate to be certified to work as a sworn law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina. Orientation will be held on May 1, 2006 (Required) Next session - May 15, 2006 - August 28, 2006 Applications must be submitted a minimum of two weeks before the session begins. In addition to attending all sessions and successfully completing each topic area, the candidate must be recommended by the School Director to take the State administered exam at the conclusion of the program. ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: (All requirements must be met prior to admission to the program) 1. Complete a Basic Law Enforcement Training application for admission and submit it to the Public SafetyTraining Complex indicating the session for which the applicant is applying. Applicants must be at least 20years old. 2. Provide a certified criminal record check for local and state records for the time period since becoming an adult (18) from all locations of residence. An Administrative Office of the Courts criminal record check or a comparable out-of-state criminal record check will satisfy this requirement. 3. A letter of sponsorship from a North Carolina law enforcement agency signed by the Chief or Sheriff which states that your character is appropriate for the law enforcement profession, and that a background check has been performed (preferably with histories attached), and that no reason was found to deny sponsorship, must be submitted. This letter must be on agency letterhead. NOTE: The sponsor has the right to withdraw sponsorship based on actions of the trainee. (see sample letter) 4. A medical form, provided to the applicant, must be completed by a physician, physician s assistant, or a nurse practitioner and submitted to determine fitness to perform the essential job functions of a law enforcement officer.. The physical should not have been performed more than one year before the beginning date of the session applied to attend. 5. Attend the Orientation scheduled two weeks prior to the beginning of the session. At that time, a reading comprehension test will be administered. All applicants must score a minimum of 10th grade reading level. Successful applicants can order books and uniform shirts at Orientation. 2 of 5 2/21/2006 1:36 PM

Attendance to Orientation is required. Any applicant who would not be eligible to be sworn as a law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina is ineligible to enroll in the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training. The BLET program requires physical activities that can be strenuous in nature. It is advisable to begin an exercise program before beginning BLET that includes military type push-ups, sit-ups, and running/jogging, especially if an exercise routine is not a normal activity. COST: Trainees must provide hearing and eye protection for the firing range. Weapons, holsters and ammunition will be provided. Other equipment will be provided if the trainee does not have the items necessary (i.e., handcuffs, handcuff case, belt, etc.). Vehicles for Driver Training are also provided. Driver Training Skid Car DRESS: Uniform type shirts are required for all classroom and practical activities. The number of shirts purchased is left to each individual. The requirement is that trainees present themselves with a neat, clean appearance. Types of pants are not mandated at this time. Trainee s who attend any activity relative to BLET without the appropriate attire could be dismissed from training. Additionally, physical fitness training will require College t-shirts and shorts or sweatshirts and pants. All shirts and physical fitness attire will be ordered during orientation, and will be paid for in advance with cash, credit card or check.
