Proposal for Academic Development Amendment to an existing course Sydney College of the Arts Contact person: Mr Michael Goldberg, Sub Dean Postgraduate Coursework, Sydney College of the Arts NOTE: This proposed amendment to an existing course has been prepared on the old, concise template. The reason for this is that the amendments and their implications are minor: two new units of study are added, History and Theory of New Media and an Elective (from a range of existing units of study). No other significant changes are proposed. The primary outcome of the proposal is a course structure brought into line with the other coursework degrees at SCA. Evidence of a comprehensive consultation process is provided. The MMDES and its staffing, resource and administrative structures have been in place since the course s inception in 1999. Section 1 1. Name of Award course(s) Master of Multimedia Design 2. Abbreviated name MMDES 3. Date of introduction 2007 Semester One. 4. Purpose of the proposal To introduce a revised structure for the degree which will provide candidates more flexibility in their study options though the offering of a variety of electives available in other Postgraduate Coursework degrees within the Faculty and in other faculties of the University. The revision of the structure will also provide a timely opportunity to revise the content of the degree to ensure its ongoing relevance and effectiveness. This revision of content will primarily be focused on the software tuition provided in the course with content covered with Macromedia Director to be replaced with extended tuition in Macromedia Flash. 5. Justification This modification to the MMDES is a direct result of the review of the degree undertaken in 2005 in line with the direction and methodology instituted by the Dean of Graduate Studies. The review provided an opportunity to formally examine the degree, which has been running successfully since 1999. From an initial enrolment of 12 students the degree the student cohort has grown to between 30 and 40 students per annum. The continued success of the degree reflects a strong demand both locally and internationally, for a studio-based program dealing with new media. The review and modification of the degree is in line with the university s desire to regularly review courses to ensure their viability and relevance to their professional community while ensuring their high quality. Additionally the MMDES, being fee paying, provides the 1

Faculty with external revenue while identifying possible candidates for the faculty s research degrees. This proposal does not parallel and is not similar to any other degree within the University. 6. Consultation and External References The Faculty conducted a significant review of the MMDES in 2005 in line with the review template developed by the University of Sydney, Dean of Graduate Studies. The review considered all aspects of the MMDES and recommended significant changes including a new structure along with changes to its teaching and resources. The duties of the Review Committee were consistent with the policies and proposals of the Academic Board. The committee comprised the following: Sub-Dean PG Coursework: Michael Goldberg MMDES Course Coordinator: Ryszard Dabek Faculty staff-member external to MMDES: A/ Prof. Brad Buckley Faculty staff-member external to MMDES: Geoff Weary Staff-member external to MMDES but within the University: Dr Chris Chesher (Art Informatics, School of English, Art History, Film and Media) Expert in the field external to University: Ms Kate Richards (New Media Artist and Producer) Dean s nominated member: Prof. Ron Newman (Dean and Director) (Chair) The panel was fortunate to draw on the expertise of Kate Richards an internationally renowned new media art practitioner with a strong background in both the artistic and commercial application of new media and interactive work. The inclusion of Dr Chris Chesher on the panel provided the review with the insights of an academic engaged in the closely related field of Arts Informatics. 7. Course structure (1) The Master of Multimedia Design (MMDES) by coursework is a one-year full-time, or two-year part-time degree program designed to encourage the creative exploration of multimedia applications through the use of animation, video, sound and interactivity. The MMDES is intended for people with some knowledge of digital media who hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience, and wish to upgrade and/or consolidate their skills for both personal and/or professional reasons. During the program, candidates develop, author and publish an interactive web site and an interactive desktop based application. The theoretical component of the MMDES provides a strong basis in multimedia conceptualisation and practice while providing an historical and conceptual framework. (2) The MMDES is a one-year masters degree of 48 credit points. Students may undertake the course in part-time or full-time mode. The part-time mode would extend the period of study in proportion to the study load undertaken by the individual student to a maximum of four semesters. (3) Coherence will be achieved through the course coordinator, who will be an academic from Sydney College of the Arts specifically assigned to the academic administration of the course. The academic will also have the responsibility to ensure current and future collaborations between the various disciplines of the Faculty involved in the teaching of the course and the academics teaching the component units of study. 2

(4) All students will be enrolled in SCA and will be managed by the student administration office of the Faculty. It is proposed that the following units of study comprise the MMDES over two semesters of full-time study: One Studio Project Major unit of study each semester and One Studio Theory and Practice unit of study each semester One History and Theory of Art Practice unit of study in each semester One elective unit of study each semester chosen from the range of postgraduate coursework electives at SCA, or in other appropriate USYD faculties. SEMESTER ONE ON-LINE PUBLISHING (studio theory) O N-LINE P UBLISHING (studio workshop) HISTORY & THEORY OF NEW MEDIA 1 ELECTIVE SEMESTER TWO ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING A (studio theory) ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING B (studio-based workshop) HISTORY & THEORY OF NEW MEDIA 2 ELECTIVE (5) What are the teaching and learning objectives of the award course? These should be related to the skills, attributes and knowledge that a graduate can be expected to achieve, as listed in the generic attributes of graduates (see 11 below). The Teaching and Learning objectives of the MMDES are related to the education of artists and designers to expand their existing practices to incorporate interactive and multimedia approaches. The MMDES is intended for people with some knowledge of digital media who hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience, and wish to upgrade and/or consolidate their skills for both personal and/or professional reasons. As the MMDES is a coursework degree this preparation is at a far more practical level than one would expect from a research degree undertaken in a similar field. A clear additional objective of the degree is to identify and prepare graduates for entry into the faculty s postgraduate research degrees. The teaching and learning objectives of the award course are to develop in students: a coherent understanding of contemporary art and new media practice and the ability to identify and articulate processes of creativity in this practice. critical judgement and independent thinking in the areas of critical analysis, histories and theories as they relate to art and new media practice. 3

A high level of skill in appropriate technologies and the ability to apply appropriate materials and processes in the development and resolution of new media artworks and applications. decision-making processes about the appropriate methods and context necessary for the professional presentation of research and finished works. specialised areas of knowledge within the discipline area(s), as well as some knowledge of how other disciplines of contemporary visual art and new media may relate or contribute to working outcomes. an understanding of the process and benefits of critical, practical and intellectual problem solving skills in relation to art and new media practice. an awareness of the context of visual art and new media in relation to current and historical contemporary practice. the identification, selection and appropriate use of technologies to further new media art practice in critical, conceptual and creative ways. 8. Proposed teaching/delivery methods (1) Describe the teaching methods that will be used, including any distinctive features of delivery, e.g. use of Internet/WebCT. Teaching in the MMDES will take 3 forms; i.) Theory classes, (History and Theory of New Media 1 & 2) arranged in the traditional lecture/tutorial model, ii.) studio theory classes (Online Publishing A and Electronic Publishing A) conducted as a seminar discussion group and iii.) the practice studio (Online Publishing B and Electronic Publishing B) which will be conducted as studio based series of lectures and workshops. SCA is currently involved in the development of on-line delivery across many of its courses with funds provided by TIF grants. The development of subjects are primarily being undertaken in WebCT with a focus on the provision of Subject Outlines and Study Guides, on-line Readers and other visual resources. SCA is also developing a Data Bank of Visual Art images available for access by staff and students adjacent to the On Line learning environment with some 8000 images being available in 2006. (2) Give details of any component(s) of the award course that involve clinical or industrial placement/experience. Not Applicable at this stage. (3) Is the award course to be offered in off-shore mode and/or by distance education? If so, what process are in place to guarantee, the quality of academic staffing, available resources for teaching and provision of adequate curriculum delivery, assessment and authentication of student work.] Not Applicable 9. Assessment procedures (1) Describe the proposed assessment regime for the award course i.e. the proportion of cours ework to practical components and examinations. The MMDES degree has THREE components for Assessment: 4

1. A 2000 word essay per Semester based on issues covered in the History and Theory of Art Practice. 2. A seminar presentation for the Art Practice Seminar per Semester. MMDES candidates will report on work in progress in relation to the critical rationale of the proposed MMDES project. 3. Examination at the end of each semester with the completion of each creative project (on-line publishing project, electronic publishing project) assessed by two internal academic staff members. Candidates must pass in all components of assessment to be awarded the degree of MMDES. The Studio project comprises 70% of the total mark and Studio presentations combined with essays written for the Theory Seminar program will constitute 30% of total marks. Online Publishing A Candidates work towards the development, design and implementation of an interactive project developed for delivery through the on-line environment. The MMDES course is student-centred and aims to consolidate self-direction. The development of the candidate s proposed studio project is done in close consultation with the candidate s academic supervisor and in response to a number of open briefs that provide both a conceptual and technical framework. As the candidates are required to engage in an intensive program of research and development during the semester a number of clear signposts are set to ensure that a project s development can be clearly gauged. Each semester, as part of the assessment process, students will be required to a give an individual seminar presentation on the rationale and critical development of the candidate s studio project. The seminar should be supported by appropriate visual material and will be assessed by the Academic Supervisor. Electronic Publishing A Candidates work towards the development, design and implementation of an interactive project developed for delivery as a standalone non-networked application. The seminar is to be supported by appropriate visual material and will be assessed by the Academic Supervisor. Online Publishing B The MMDES delivers the technical component of the coursework in a series of workshops that provide instruction in the use and implementation of authoring programs relevant to online publishing and the development and 5

exploration of media. This is done through the lecture-based presentation of technical examples that are supported by in-class exercises. These workshops are three hours in duration per week and are supported by a dedicated technical demonstrator who is available during the lecture and for five hours on Saturdays. Electronic Publishing B The MMDES delivers the technical component of the coursework in a series of workshops that provide instruction in the use and implementation of authoring programs relevant to electronic publishing and the development and exploration of media. This is done through the lecture-based presentation of technical examples that are supported by in-class exercises. These workshops are three hours in duration per week and are supported by a dedicated technical demonstrator who is available during the lecture and for five hours on Saturdays. History and Theory of New Media 1 There are two units of study alternating each semester. This subject will provide students with a historical perspective and critical outlook that will allow them to conceptualise and situate their practice both in terms of media specific debates and the broader context of contemporary art and media discourses. The writings of key thinkers such as McLuhan, Virilio, Baudrillard and Manovich will be examined during the course. Candidates are required to write a 2,000-word essay on topics presented by the lecturer who then assess it. History and Theory of New Media 2 There are two units of study alternating each semester. This subject will develop on ideas examined in History and Theory of New Media 1 in the context of current new media based art and design work. The writings of key thinkers such as McLuhan, Virilio, Baudrillard and Manovich will be examined during the course. Candidates are required to write a 2,000-word essay on topics presented by the lecturer who then assess it. Assessment related Procedure Assessment will take place at the end of each semester. Having received report/s of assessment and having received the results of the examinations, the Course Coordinator will report to the SCA Board, which shall then determine the result of the candidate. In special cases the SCA Board may require the candidate to take a further examination and/or project assessment. The SCA Board may permit an unsuccessful candidate to revise and resubmit if the candidate s work is deemed to be of sufficient merit to warrant this concession. Special conditions may be prescribed to be fulfilled by the candidate. On the recommendation of the Dean of Faculty (or staff members appointed by the Dean to have supervisory responsibility for the Master of Multimedia Design), any candidate may be called upon to show cause why that candidature should not be terminated by reason of unsatisfactory progress towards the completion of the degree, and where in the opinion of 6

the SCA Board, the candidate does not show good cause, the Board may terminate the candidature (2) Describe the use of external assessors or examiners, if relevant. External assessors are not used in assessment for the MMDES. 10. Overall Student workload Give details of the expected student workload in terms of the total time involved, including lectures, tutorials, practical experience, independent study, reading and work for assessment. (The student workload should be consistent with the credit points assigned for the units of study.) All units of study in the course are six credit points and will each represent 150 hours of student work. New Media and Studio Theory units of study will have two hour lectures and/or seminars, while studio units of study will require a 2 hours per week of face to face consultation in the studios. How does the academic course load including the weight given to any dissertation component compare with other similar course loads in the faculty/college/university? No dissertation is required within the units of study of the MMDES. The MMDES workload is similar to the student workload of the Master of Film and Digital Image (MFDI), Master of Studio Art (MSA) and the Master of Contemporary Art for Educators (MCAE) What load for HECS and student load purposes should be given to each of the constituent parts or units making up the award course? The review considered all aspects of the MMDES and recommended significant changes including a new structure along with changes to its teaching and resources. The duties of the Review Committee were consistent with the policies and proposals of the Academic Board. The committee comprised the following: Sub-Dean PG Coursework: Michael Goldberg MMDES Course Coordinator: Ryszard Dabek Faculty staff-member external to MMDES: A/ Prof. Brad Buckley Faculty staff-member external to MMDES: Geoff Weary Staff-member external to MMDES but within the University: Dr Chris Chesher (Art Informatics, School of English, Art History, Film and Media) Expert in the field external to University: Ms Kate Richards (New Media Artist and Producer) Deans' nominated member: Prof. Ron Newman (Dean and Director) (Chair) A Call for Submissions to the review was sent out in the form of a template, one for Academic, Technical and General Staff and one for MMDES students. In particular this call was most successful in eliciting responses from students with 25 received. These responses were used to analyse the MMDES in terms of what is currently provided and what recommendations would ensure that the degree is improved and optimised in the future. A revised MMDES structure was recommended consisting of eight, 6CP Units of Study as opposed to the current four Units of Study. This revision would bring the degree into line with other coursework degrees at SCA, such as the Master of Film and Digital Image (MFDI), the Master of Studio Art (MSA) and the Master of Contemporary Art for Educators (MCAE). These all have structures that well suit SCA coursework requirements. The new MMDES Units of Study would comprise two new theory Units (Theory & History of New Media 1 & 2) as well a 6CP elective, to be taken each semester. The electives would have dual benefits in being able to be cross-listed for the MFDI. One of the electives would deal with research methodology in art practice. This would provide an opportunity for coursework students to specifically prepare themselves for possible entry into the research stream at SCA. It was also recommended that the resolutions of the degree be amended to allow for part-time candidature. The recommendations of the review were circulated to the Faculty s Learning and Teaching committee and to the 24 November 2005 meeting of the SCA Board. Michael Goldberg, Sub Dean PG Coursework 13
