Degree: This Degree program provides students with a background in Computer-Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for application to the architectural building space and design of buildings, interior space analysis and design to facilitate selection of materials & products promoting energy conservation, ecologically sustainable building space and building design using Green Building/LEED point principles. Students who successfully complete the suggested program will be capable of performing pre-modeling (massing), modeling, and developing drawing documents normally expected of architects, designers, and drafting technicians. The program is designed to provide job market skills, and college transfer skill opportunities within the Architectural Design disciplines and/or Construction Management as well as opportunities for students to qualify for employment in a variety of positions within the related industries. Additionally, this program offers opportunities for working professionals to take these courses for professional development to update and improve their skills in the Building Information Modeling field. Note: It is highly recommended that each student keep a complete record of semester work/projects (i.e., a portfolio) to Page 1 of 6
present for evaluation by university/college program advisors and/or employers. This degree program utilizes various Building Information Modeling (BIM) software components, such as Revit Architecture, MEP, and Structure to prepare students for careers and college transfer in the area of Interior Building Architecture, Architecture, and Building Information Modeling (BIM), with an emphasis in the Architectural Technology area. Highlights: State-of-the-Art computer lab and software. Career Opportunities: Architectural Draftsperson, Designer/Technician, Planning Assistant, CADD Technician, BIM Technician, Facilities/Space Planner. Certificate: This Certificate program provides students with a background in Computer-Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for application to the architectural building space and design of buildings, interior space analysis and design to facilitate selection of materials & products promoting energy conservation, ecologically sustainable building space and building design using Green Building/LEED point principles. Students who successfully complete the suggested certificate will be capable of performing pre-modeling (massing, modeling, and developing drawing documents normally expected of architects, designers and drafting technicians. SLO #2: Formulate, categorize and identify Green Building/LEED certified materials and systems for use in residential and commercial projects. SLO #3: Organize, categorize and illustrate the development of initial models into architectural design documents, individually or through work group methods. SLO #4: Demonstrate, summarize and recall visual and verbal note taking methods and apply the information into models and finalized residential and commercial project designs. SLO #5: Assess, compose and analyze architectural graphic information effectively to create solutions from a criteria matrix, bubble diagram and block diagramming methods. SLO #6: Choose, assemble and distinguish the necessary skills in developing marketable BIM/CADD skills for university transfer and the job market, through measurable methods in project development and presentations. Need #7 of CCC-501: Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area This new degree and certificate are being added both to complement the existing Architectural Design Technology degree and certificate created in 1975 and the Architecture Degree and Certificate in 1970. More importantly, they are being Page 3 of 6
created as one of the four degree/certificate program areas that are part of CRC s GreenForce Program, focusing on sustainability in the built environment. This includes the College s Architecture, Architectural Design Technology Building Code Technology, Construction, Construction Management Technology and Horticulture programs. Although there are several North Far North Regional Consortium member colleges with CADD related programs (American River, Butte, Sierra) and Drafting Technician (Redwoods) and architecture programs (Sequoias, Yuba and Cosumnes River), there are no specific programs that move into this new Building Information Modeling (BIM) field. This certificate and degree are opportunities for new high school graduates wishing to specialize as well as for professionals in the field wishing to upgrade their skills by learning this new technology. #8 of CCC-501: Labor Market Information & Analysis (CTE only) The BIM A.S. Degree and Certificate prepare students for the following career options: Architectural Draftsperson, Designer/Technician, Planning Assistant, CADD Technician, BIM Technician, Facilities/Space Planner. The job data that complements this education is not precise, because the field is so new; the closest data is in the area of construction and building inspectors, which the analysis is provided in this proposal for the potential labor market information. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the California Employment Development Department (EDD) Labor Market Division, employment in occupations related to Architectural and Civil Drafting is expected to grow nationally at a higher rate than in California, but the outlook is better for the Sacramento MSA over time than the State. The need for architectural and civil drafters is expected to grow by 9.0% nationally, but in California by a smaller 2.0%, with 420 jobs expected to be available in the Golden State each year between 2008 and 2018. The rate of growth in the Sacramento area is expected to grow at a higher rate than California at 6.7%; an annual 29 jobs are expected to be available between 2008 and 2018 in the Sacramento area. Earnings for potential graduates who are hired locally in the Sacramento area are reasonable at a median $25.44 per hour for architectural and civil drafters, which is higher than the median for the U.S. ($22.32), but slightly lower than the median for California ($25.59). Sacramento Area industries that hire graduates with this education include architectural & engineering services (there are 871), management & technical consulting services (808)), building equipment contractors (923), non-residential building construction (823), employment services (250) and specialized design services (439). Because this program is the only community college program focusing specifically on Building Information Modeling (in addition to existing CADD and related drafting programs) in the North Far North Regional Consortium, it is likely that graduates may also seek employment throughout the entire northern region, as well. The complete labor market data is available in the attached appendix. Is this program fully or partially online? YES X NO If yes, what percentage online? Course delivery varies; a couple of courses have been approved to be offered in all three modalities -- on-ground, online and as hybrid courses. Page 4 of 6
Date the proposed program was announced to the Regional consortium: 03/12/09 Please Note NFNRC Program Endorsement Guidelines System Office has delegated 2 responsibilities to Consortium. 1) Assess if there is a sufficient labor market to justify program 2) Not an unnecessary duplication of program Page 5 of 6
