Message from Chairman of the Board, Angelo Damante It is with a sense of honor and a renewed conviction that I continue serving as the Board Chair of the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce. The past year was filled with remarkable accomplishments that have created a solid foundation for the chamber to better support commerce in the region and I am confident this organization will continue to exceed expectations. One word best describes the chamber s current position; milestone, indicating that we have achieved a goal and made progress from where we once were, but that we still have a course to follow and progress to make. In the past year, the chamber has demonstrated that it has the wherewithal to represent the regional business community and the resources to support and introduce initiatives to attract new businesses and industries to the region. Through collaborations and dedicated committees, our efforts have lead to the formation of the CleanTech Corridor, a project aimed at attracting investment and development in North County. As we move forward with a clear mission, Building Vibrant Communities Through Stronger Commerce, we look forward to the 2011-2012 year ending with yet another milestone. This chamber will continue to collaborate with businesses, government, and other organizations to elevate the region and will advocate to ensure we have the best possible climate for business in Southern California. With those goals in mind, this organization will continue to make strides in the development of innovative and sustainable programs and benefits for its members. As a regional chamber of commerce, we strive to make sure every member has a benefit they can use to better their own business. We must continue to collaborate with local organizations, communities and elected officials to consolidate the San Diego North Chamber as the voice of our community, advocating for commerce through public policy, economic development, health, and education. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors, the Chamber staff, and our members to show our commitment to building a stronger pro-commerce region and to accomplish these goals. San Diego North Population Demographics The San Diego North region is home to a rapidly growing population expected to surge from 758,000 to 827,000 residents over the course of the next ten years. With such a large estimated increase, the vitality of the area will depend in large part on the growth and stability that local businesses and organizations will be able to provide. The San Diego North Chamber of Commerce is poised to ensure the success of these entities through its continued efforts in creating a favorable business climate, offering opportunities for professional development, and supporting the legislation and policies that best serve the business community. Of the communities in the region, the highest growth is expected to occur in Torrey Highlands, Sorrento Valley, and Tierrasanta. In the 2010 General Election, 66% of registered voters in the San Diego North region voted. The average voter turnout in the State of California was in 2010 was 60%. As an advocacy group, the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce strives to inform voters on ballot initiatives, propositions and candidates. 2010-2011 Annual Report Regional Business Composition The San Diego North region boasts a vibrant business community, with companies and organizations that operate in a wide array of industries and sectors. The area is home to over 18,000 businesses and over 358,000 employees. Based on current projections, the number of employees will increase by an additional 40,000 workers by the year 2020. Chamber Impact Chamber Committees About the Chamber Chamber committees are open to all members and are a great way for members to get involved and impact the region. Public Policy Committee The public policy committee effectively addresses public policy issues at the local, state, federal, and/or international level. The committee is charged with identifying paramount issues and topics related to the business community, as well as making recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding positions on proposed legislation and ballot initiatives that the Chamber, in turn, can pass on to its members. Health Committee The Health Committee serves to educate businesses about health care issues specific to the region that impact bottom lines and workforce productivity. The committee is committed to developing and constantly improving what employers can do to promote a healthier lifestyle for their employees with minimal, or no investment. Economic Development Committee The Chamber strives to stay at the forefront of economic development efforts in the region. The main goal of the committee is to attract business and jobs to the region while maintaining a progressive and innovative business climate. This committee is in charge of the CleanTech Corridor initiative. Education Committee The Education Committee arranges valuable seminars and training workshops to develop members on a professional level. The goal of this committee is to sustain a competent workforce and competitive business environment. The main areas of focus are the Small Business Resource Center, the Speaker s Bureau, and the Job Bank. Leadership Council The Leadership Council navigates new and prospective businesses into the Chamber and serves as a guide to ensure that each member is able to participate to their fullest. Each Council volunteer is dedicated to ensuring that every chamber member is knowledgable about chamber events and benefits, and has the tools needed to succeed.
