M.Ed. in SPECIAL EDUCATION with EI CONCENTRATION (for teachers and non-teachers alike) Program Overview: The M.Ed. in Special Education focuses on the broader concepts of exceptionality - learning, instruction and development - with regard to special populations. The concentration in emotional impairment focuses on in-depth preparation for working with individuals with emotional / behavioral disorders across a variety of settings. This graduate degree is intended to address the needs of two distinct groups of individuals: those who have or are eligible to receive Michigan teacher certification, and other professionals not in the teaching profession, who routinely work with individuals and groups where emotional / behavioral issues may occur, i.e., community mental health workers, HR administrators, Health and Human Services staff and administrators, police officers, counselors, school psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation counselors, behavior specialists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, health caregivers and others. In addition to the required coursework - which is the same for both groups - each group is required to complete a specific 4-credit exit option: Michigan teachers seeking to add the EI endorsement to their teaching certificate - Must complete SE 594 (Practicum, Emotional Impairment K-12) Non-teachers who wish to increase their expertise in working with individuals with emotional and/or behavioral disorders, not seeking a teaching credential Details - Must complete 4 credits of electives, approved by adviser All courses except the practicum are offered online Teachers seeking the EI endorsement must complete the practicum in person Non-teachers may complete the entire program online; no practicum is required All courses must be completed within 6 years (most finish in 2 3 years) This is a cohort program that begins fall term and continues year-round This program is approved for financial aid (financialaid@oakland.edu)
