B., Southeast Region NRA Conference, Southeast Region National Rehabilitation Association, "Job Placement of the Ex-Offender: Trials, Tribulations, and Tips," Many ex-offenders with disabilities have difficulty finding permanent, well-paid employment because they lack job-seeking experience, a work history, and employment skills. Many employers refuse to hire individuals with criminal records. These consumers face not only real or perceived barriers to employment due to a disability but also must confront the challenge of overcoming their criminal background. As rehabilitation counselors we must be aware of these barriers and challenges and strive to secure appropriate employment for these individuals. This presentation will focus on some of the problem areas encountered by ex-offenders in the job seeking process and give tips to counselors on strategies and techniques that may result in a successful employment search.
