R.N. CHALMERS AWARD 2013 TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR GRADUATING SECONDARY STUDENTS BACKGROUND North Field Office Telephone: 905-451-2862 / 1-800-799-3339 215 Orenda Road Fax: 905-451-3127 Brampton, ON L6T 5L1 Jan Courtin, Superintendent of Education Bramalea, Chinguacousy, North Park Families Mr. R.N. Chalmers served the Peel District School Board as a Principal, Superintendent of Schools, Superintendent of Special Services and Associate Director of Education. In January 1996 at a regular meeting of the Peel District School Board the following motion was approved: that, the Peel District School Board establish an award to honour the contribution to the education of youngsters in Peel by Mr. R.N. Chalmers to be awarded annually to a student or students who show outstanding ability and aptitude in a special education program within the secondary school; that, monies be placed in a reserve fund, the interest of which will constitute the award or awards; that, an invitation be extended to all interested parties to contribute to the development of this fund. PURPOSE The R.N. Chalmers Award is intended to recognize and honour a senior graduating student registered in a Peel Secondary School who has been deemed Exceptional and demonstrated leadership, educational progress and who has made an outstanding contribution to the quality of life in his/her school. Each Peel Secondary School may select one candidate. The name of this candidate will then be submitted to a Regional Selection Committee who will select the recipient of the regional R.N. Chalmers Award from the list of candidates submitted. QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate for the regional R.N. Chalmers Award must: be an exceptional student who received Special Education programming (i.e. ISSP, Behavioural, Vocational, Gifted) during their years in a Secondary School, be a graduating student registered in a Peel Secondary School; have demonstrated improved educational progress and have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of school and community life during his/her senior year while attending a Peel Secondary School; SELECTION PROCESS A single exceptional (ISSP, Behavioural, Vocational, Gifted) candidate from each of the Peel Secondary Schools may be selected each year by an in-school committee.

Candidates in each school may be nominated by a staff member or may submit their own Application Form to the Principal of the school by April 26 th. Students who graduate in January are eligible to be candidates for this award. Principals should forward the Application Form of the candidate selected by the in-school committee to the Chair of the Regional Selection Committee, Jan Courtin, Superintendent of Education, North Field Office by May 3rd. The following recommendations should be considered in the application process: 1. The student s Application Form should be typed by the school secretary to prevent initial bias based on the writing syntax. 2. The Application Form should differentiate clearly between school and community activities so that the Regional Selection Committee can focus on direct contributions to the school. 3. The Application Form should highlight improvements made during the student's years at Secondary School. 4. The Application Form should differentiate clearly between participation in a school activity and actual leadership in that involvement. 5. The Head of Student Services/Guidance should review the submission and share the information on the Application Form with the nominated student and seek to solicit further data from the student s perspective prior to the final submission. A Regional Selection Committee will meet in June to review the Application Forms submitted by the schools. Candidates may be interviewed if deemed necessary by the Committee.
