If I have a mixed Exchange Environment (such as Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007), what steps should I take prior to upgrading? In a situation where there are differing versions of the Microsoft Exchange servers in a BlackBerry Enterprise Server environment, it would be recommended to ensure that you have the correct version of CDO.DLL file on your BlackBerry Enterprise Server. For more information on determining what version of CDO.DLL to have installed, please review the KB10197 located in the BlackBerry Technical Support Center, which is located below: Determining which CDO version should be installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server KB10197&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135696053&stateId=0%200%2062423546) 15. What version of.net framework does Service Pack 5 require? To support languages other than English, Microsoft.NET Framework Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 must be installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. 16. Does the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software make use of 64-bit operating systems? The BlackBerry Enterprise Server can run on 64-bit versions of Windows. For details regarding which versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server support 64-bit versions of Windows, consult the System Requirements. 17. Can the BlackBerry Enterprise Server database be hosted on a 64-bit version of SQL? The BlackBerry Enterprise Server database can be hosted on a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Server that is using the 64 bit technology, as listed in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center under article KB15167. This article can be found by clicking on the following link: BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 5 support (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynamickc.do?externalid=kb15167&sliceid=sal_pu blic&command=show&forward=nonthreadedkc&kcid=kb15167) 18. When will Service Pack 5 become available for GroupWise?

We will not be releasing a Service Pack 5 for BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise. Instead of doing so, we will be releasing Service Pack 6, to provide for consistency in release cycles across all BlackBerry Enterprise Server platforms. 19. Can the service pack be applied to the BlackBerry Professional Software 4.1? The Service Pack 5 software is for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 software and cannot be applied to BlackBerry Professional Software version 4.1. 20. Do we need to make any changes to the Vendor.xml or Device.xml files? The vendor.xml and device.xml file will automatically be placed into the appropriate directory on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. These files can also be modified manually. We will be releasing a mechanism for automatically updating these files in BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 (tentative). Pre-Installation: 21. How can you determine what version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software that is already installed? In the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, if Servers is highlighted under the BlackBerry Domain, each BlackBerry Enterprise Server can be selected in the right pane. As each one is highlighted, the bottom pane will display the details associated with the selected BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The last detail displayed is the BlackBerry Enterprise Server version. 22. How can I determine what the best method of upgrading would be for our environment? The method of upgrading that is chosen is optional. Choosing to perform an in-place upgrade may suit environments where hardware is at a premium. Using the phased approach to upgrading may be the method that is utilized by a company who prefers a staged approach to upgrading and have certain subsets of users that they would like to address before others. 23. When using VMWare, can we take a snapshot of the server prior to performing the upgrade to restore to the previous version of software? Restoring from a snapshot is a key advantage of utilizing virtual environments, however the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has a unique constituency and the virtual environment may not revert changes that have occurred on BlackBerry smartphones or on user s mail servers, as a result of the upgrade. It is recommended that a testing environment be used to gauge the impact of such a procedure.

24. How do you backup the BlackBerry Enterprise Server database? The BlackBerry Configuration database can be archived using the tools that are provided by the database engine vendor. Microsoft has the option to perform backups in their Administration tools for MSDE/ SQL, while IBM offers the same for DB2. Research In Motion (RIM) also offers a utility called BlackBerryDBRestore that can perform backups and there are various third-party applications that can perform backups as well. 25. What considerations should be taken when upgrading the backup server in a Disaster Recovery environment? The same precautions should be taken when upgrading the Disaster Recovery server to the same version as the production BlackBerry Enterprise Server, with one additional precaution. In order to prevent two BlackBerry Enterprise Servers from connecting to the BlackBerry Infrastructure at the same time (which would result in the SRP Identifier and Authentication credentials being deactivated), ensure that you remove the check mark to automatically start the BlackBerry services. 26. Are remote components required to be upgraded after the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has been upgraded to Service Pack 5? Remote components are not required to be upgraded but doing so is strongly recommended, so that each component includes the latest fixes and ability to understand any new features or changes in functionality. 27. Can I have mixed versions of BlackBerry Enterprise Server software in my environment? Yes, each version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server supports co-existence with other versions. It is advantageous to upgrade all of the BlackBerry Enterprise Servers to the same version however, so that versioning remains consistent. Additionally, each version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is in the environment is tracked in a specific table in the BlackBerry Configuration database (refer to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version column in the ServerConfig table, to view this information). 28. Can the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software be installed on a Domain Controller? Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a Domain Controller is strongly discouraged, although it is possible to do so. Domain Controllers have significant purpose with Active Directory environments and therefore, there are some unique challenges that may be observed if the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is installed. These challenges may include issues with permissions and in configuring certain ports. Additionally, if the BlackBerry Enterprise Server ever needs to be restarted, the functionality of the Domain Controller would be unavailable during that time period.

29. Will my settings (IT Policies, User Configurations, License Keys etc) be retained after the BlackBerry Enterprise Server upgrade has been performed? The IT policies, license keys and user configuration settings that were configured prior to the upgrade will be retained, as they are stored in the BlackBerry Configuration database. 30. I have heard that if you move a user from one BlackBerry Enterprise Server to another BlackBerry Enterprise Server that you would have to perform Enterprise Activation. Is this true? If both BlackBerry Enterprise Servers are attached to a single BlackBerry Configuration database, the move from one BlackBerry Enterprise Server to another is seamless and does not require an Enterprise Activation. If both BlackBerry Enterprise Servers are attached to independent BlackBerry Configuration databases, a security wipe needs to be performed (to break the binding with the previous BlackBerry Configuration database) and an Enterprise Activation must be performed. The instructions for performing a security wipe can be found KB02318&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135896192&stateId=0%200%2062637483.) 31. What updates outside of my BlackBerry Enterprise Server (e.g MAPI / CDO / OS Service Packs) should be applied prior to upgrading to Service Pack 5? Certain installations of required software are provided with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, while others must be obtained separately. The software that must be installed is included in the System Requirements section of the Installation Guide. 32. Can we upgrade the database prior to upgrading the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software? It is possible to upgrade the BlackBerry Configuration database prior to installing BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 SP5. This practice is considered to be part of performing a phased upgrade, which is one of three methods that can be employed to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software. 33. How do I upgrade from MSDE 2000 to SQL Express 2005? Information regarding the upgrade from MSDE 2000 to SQL Express 2005 can be found on Microsoft s website, located http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/upgrade.mspx. 34. If I currently have two BlackBerry Enterprise Servers pointing to two separate databases, is it possible to move the users to the same database without having to perform a wipe handheld and Enterprise Activation?

An Enterprise Activation will be necessary in this circumstance. A BlackBerry smartphone user has a binding association with the BlackBerry Configuration database that their BlackBerry Enterprise Server is associated with. If they are moved to another BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is using a different database, a security wipe must be performed to break the binding and an Enterprise Activation must be performed on the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The instructions for performing a security wipe can be found KB02318&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135896192&stateId=0%200%2062637483.) 35. Are there any considerations to take in account for environments that have BlackBerry Connect devices? The BlackBerry Enterprise Server is designed to work with a variety of BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry Connect. All BlackBerry features that are available on BlackBerry Connect smartphones are supported by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BlackBerry Internet Service is also designed to work with BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry Connect. More information can be found KB03283&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135900758&stateId=0%200%2062639986.) 36. Where can I find additional information about the BlackBerryDBBackup.exe tool? Information regarding the BlackBerryDBBackup.exe tool can be found in the Upgrade Guide for each version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1. The Upgrade Guide can be downloaded from the BlackBerry website. 37. When using the BlackBerryDBBackup.exe utility, what is the default username and password? There is no default username and password used by the BlackBerryDBBackup.exe utility. Users are expected to use the appropriate credentials, along with the required syntax. 38. Can we back up the database using the SQL tools, or do we have to use the BlackBerryDBBackup.exe utility? The application that is used for archiving the BlackBerry Configuration database is optional. The goal is simply to ensure that a backup is performed regularly. 39. Where can I get more information on using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Migration tool? Information about using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Migration tool is contained in the Installation Guide for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

40. What are the limitations of using SQL Express instead of a full version of SQL? Information regarding the differences between SQL 2005 Express and SQL 2005can be found on Microsoft s website, by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx. 41. I would like to change the name of my BlackBerry Enterprise Server as it appears in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Is this possible? For more information on how to rename the BlackBerry Enterprise Server as it appears in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, please refer to KB05193 which is located in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center. Additionally, this article can be found at the following link: Update BlackBerry Enterprise Server information after machine name change (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynamickc.do?externalid=kb05193&sliceid=sal_pu blic&command=show&forward=nonthreadedkc&kcid=kb05193) 42. Will the installation modify the BlackBerry Enterprise Server database schema? Installations of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software do not always make changes to the schema of the BlackBerry Configuration database. The scripts that are run during each installation are provided with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, if server administrators are curious to review what changes are being made. The default path to this database script location is: C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\ConfigUtil\db\script Under no circumstances are customers encouraged to modify these scripts. 43. The manual indicates to remove inactive users. What is meant by this? It is recommended to remove any users from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that are non-functional. Ensuring that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is only performing work for active users will reduce the amount of system resources required and optimize the performance of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. 44. We are planning on moving the BlackBerry Router service into the DMZ. Should this be performed prior to performing the upgrade? Do you have more information on how to perform this? Information regarding using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with a DMZ can be found here. This is not a recommended configuration but will function with the correct configuration.

45. Where can I obtain more information on how to deploy the BlackBerry Device Software? More information can be found under the Sending Software and Java Applications to BlackBerry Devices section of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Administration Guide. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Administration Guide is included with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, or can be obtained from the BlackBerry website. Installation: 46. Will the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software check my pre-requisites before starting the installation? The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software is designed to check certain prerequisites during the installation, however it is strongly recommended that customers review the System Requirements that are provided within the Installation Guide for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, for a comprehensive list of the prerequisites. 47. Can the Service Pack 5 software be installed remotely? The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software can be installed remotely, using many popular third-party applications or via the mechanisms offered in Windows. It is suggested however, that if it is possible to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software locally, this is preferred. 48. How long can you expect the upgrade to take to install? The duration of the upgrade is variable; it is largely dependent of which upgrade method is chosen, which components are being installed and the specifications of the hardware that is being used to host the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It is recommended that for benchmarking purposes, customers perform upgrades in their testing environments before performing them within the production environment. 49. What account should I use to upgrade the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software? The service account that was used to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is the same account that should be used for installing subsequent upgrades. 50. Does the service pack require the original installation media from the current version of software that is installed? In many cases, the original installation source files may be required. This allows for material changes to certain files to be performed. 51. Should I stop the BlackBerry services prior to performing the upgrade?

It is best practice to account for the downtime of service and services during a BlackBerry Enterprise Server upgrade. The versions of the services, as well as the core binaries related to them, are typically updated during the process of an upgrade, so the necessary files will need to be freed in order for this to occur. 52. Should I stop the BlackBerry services on all BlackBerry Enterprise Servers that are in my environment? The BlackBerry services only need to be stopped on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is being upgraded. This ensures that all other users continue to function normally. 53. I m planning on upgrading our SQL environment during our BlackBerry Enterprise Server maintenance window. How would I move the BlackBerry Enterprise Server database from one SQL server to another? The instructions for moving the BlackBerry Configuration database to a new server can be found in the link below. It is recommended to avoid such moves in parallel with performing upgrades of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, to ensure that significant production changes are isolated from each other. KB03112&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135924484&stateId=0%200%2062663300) 54. I m experiencing errors when trying to upgrade the BlackBerry Enterprise Server database. What should I look for? When any problem is encountered during the upgrade of the BlackBerry Configuration database, it is essential to record any specific errors that are observed. Information that is displayed on-screen or in the installation log can be very valuable in determining the nature of the problem. 55. Can I choose a different directory to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, or do I have to install the software onto the C: Drive? If a new installation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is being performed, the desired directory can be specified during the installation. If an upgrade to an existing installation is being performed, the existing path to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server files should be retained. By default, this is located here: C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Post Installation: 56. Will I have to perform an Enterprise Activation with our end user s BlackBerry devices after installing Service Pack 5? When upgrading the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, users are not required to perform an Enterprise Activation. This is because the service books that are currently on the BlackBerry device will continue to be able to communicate using the current information with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Users with older handheld software may want to consider upgrading their BlackBerry Handhelds to the latest version that is currently available by their wireless provider. For more information on downloading the latest BlackBerry Device Software or BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, please refer to the following KB article: Downloading the most recent versions of BlackBerry Device Software and BlackBerry Desktop Manager software KB12532&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=135646161&stateId=0%200%2062373424) 57. Does the administration of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software change after upgrading to Service Pack 5 The changes in administration of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server differs among the major code lines, however if you are upgrading from a previous version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 software than the configuration will remain the same. For details on how to manage and configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, please refer to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Administration Guide which is included with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software. This documentation can also be found within the BlackBerry website. 58. In what order should I start the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services? Information on what order to Start and Stop the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services can be found in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center under article KB13728, which is in the following location: Correct order to start and stop BlackBerry services (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynamickc.do?externalid=kb13718&sliceid=sal_pu blic&command=show&forward=nonthreadedkc&kcid=kb13718) 59. When can I expect further updates (Maintenance Releases) to become available?

For more information on when to expect future updates to become available, please refer to BlackBerry Enterprise Server section of the Download links which is located within the BlackBerry website, and which also can be accessed at the following link: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/#tab_ddetail_subtab_software 60. What regular maintenance should I be performing on my BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Maintenance should be performed to your BlackBerry Enterprise Server in the same manner as any other server within your environment. Additionally, regular database maintenance should also be occurring as with any other database. For details on the specific BlackBerry Enterprise Server maintenance jobs that should be occurring, please refer to the following BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center articles: How to run Microsoft SQL Server maintenance jobs for the BlackBerry Configuration Database (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynamickc.do?externalid=kb04426&sliceid=sal_pu blic&command=show&forward=nonthreadedkc&kcid=kb04426) How to run Microsoft SQL Server maintenance in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition KB14017&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=45744409&stateId=0%200%2021384983) 61. If I make a change to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server registry, is it required that I restart the server for the changes to take affect? With BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0 and higher, we have integrated logic that periodically scans some registry locations for changes. Any registry changes that do not fall under this monitoring would require a restart of the associated BlackBerry service to be recognized. A full reboot of the server should not be necessary in typical scenarios. 62. If I were to roll back to a previous version, what version would I roll back to? Additional information on how to restore to a previous version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software can be found in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center under article KB12031. This article can also be referenced at the following link: How to rollback after an upgrade (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynamickc.do?externalid=kb12031&sliceid=sal_pu blic&command=show&forward=nonthreadedkc&kcid=kb12031)

New Features: 63. What considerations should be taken when using the Service Book throttling registry key? In large environments where an upgrade across a major version is taking place (for example, upgrading from a BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 to BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1), it would be recommended to configure the Service Book throttling registry key prior to starting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. For more information on how to configure the Service Book throttling registry key, refer to the Improve the Startup Performance of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server section of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Upgrade Guide. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Upgrade Guide is included with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, and can also be found within the BlackBerry website.
