Medicine in Motion Medical Centre and Soles in Motion WORK HEALTH AND INJURY PREVENTION (W.H.I.P.) PROGRAM Manual for Preferred Business Customer Program 121 Ilsley Avenue Dartmouth, NS B3B 1S4 Phone: 468-2774 Fax: 468-1359 www.medicineinmotion.ca

INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Work Health and Injury Prevention (WHIP) Program. It is our objective to be able to provide you, our Preferred Business Customer, with access to an efficient and timely assessment, diagnosis and treatment for the healthcare issues affecting your employees. We are also passionate about the prevention of workplace injuries. The Medicine in Motion Medical Centre and Soles in Motion, conveniently located in the Burnside Industrial Park, use an integrated, multi-disciplinary team approach to the management of healthcare issues. We want to help you protect your company s most valuable commodity, your employee team! By providing your employees with timely access to injury and sickness management we will be able to return your injured or sick employees back to the workplace as quickly and safely as possible. The cornerstones of the WHIP program are as follows: 1. Timely Access to Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy Services: Our Physiotherapists use a biomechanical approach and they have dedicated work injury personnel available to handle work related injuries for fast claim resolution. Massage Therapy is also available for workplacerelated issues such as neck, back and shoulder strain from lifting or poor posture at computer workstations related to improper ergonomics. We commit to provide rapid access (within 24hrs) to these services for our Preferred Business Customers. 2. Timely Access to Physicians: The Burnside Family Practice and Walk in Medical Clinic is located in the Medicine in Motion facility. We have family physicians that are accepting NEW patients into their practices as well as a walk in medical clinic at our location. We also operate a clinic staffed by sports medicine physicians who can assess, diagnosis and suggest treatment for any joint or muscle disorder or injury related to the workplace or recreational activities. Osteoarthritis management is also available. Our Preferred Business Customers will have access to same day appointments in the walk in medical clinic and access to a sports medicine physician within 5 working days.

3. Discount at Soles in Motion: Soles in Motion is a retail outlet with an exceptional selection of athletic, orthopedic and safety footwear. Onsite footwear fittings are available for your employees at your workplace. Their Canadian Certified Pedorthist will provide a pre-assessment consultation which includes a gait and lower limb assessment to determine if you have a foot or lower limb issue that will benefit from custom orthotics. Their bracing specialist can fit you for a custom or offthe-shelf orthopedic brace. They also carry athletic apparel and exercise/training aids. Our Preferred Business Customers will receive a 15% discount on all footwear, apparel, exercise products and accessories. (Note: this discount excludes orthopedic bracing, electronics, custom orthotics and running clinic registration fees) 4. Discount at Burnside Pharmacy: The pharmacy adjacent to the Medicine in Motion Medical Centre offers prescription delivery to your workplace so that you can simply drop off your prescription after you have seen the Medicine in Motion physician and they will deliver your prescription to you. Our Preferred Business Customers will receive a 10% discount on front store items from the Burnside Pharmacy (Note: this discount excludes prescriptions).

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND MASSAGE THERAPY SERVICES Work related joint/muscle injury may require reporting to the Worker s Compensation Board (WCB) of Nova Scotia. Assessment, treatment and ongoing evaluation must then occur in a timely fashion to insure a prompt return to work. This increases work productivity and lessens time off work. Once a physician or physiotherapist has determined the type of treatment, there is a need to access treatment quickly and liase with WCB. Medicine in Motion will work with the patient, physician and WCB to insure appropriate treatment and establish reasonable timelines. Progress updates will be communicated to all stakeholders to keep them informed of the situation and consult with specialists if other levels of treatment are required. [i.e. orthopedic surgeon referral /MRI ] FAMILY PRACTICE AND WALK IN MEDICAL CLINIC FAMILY PRACTICE: The Burnside Family Practice and Walk In Medical Clinic is located in Medicine and currently has five family physicians with their practice at the clinic. Some of these physicians are accepting NEW patients into their practice. This gives new employees to your company from out of town and their families the opportunity to join one of these practices. The close proximity of Medicine in Motion to your work place will allow your employees to seek medical care and return to the workplace in a very efficient manner. All of the family physicians at Medicine in Motion are fully licensed and ready to take care of all of your employee s health care needs. The family practice is open Monday to Friday 8:30am 5:00pm.

WALK IN MEDICAL CLINIC: The Burnside Family Practice and Walk In Medical Clinic operates a Walk In Medical Clinic designed to meet the minor medical and injury needs of the Burnside work population which may occur during daytime office hours. Your employees will have easy access to a medical assessment with same day appointments or they may simply walk in to the clinic to be seen by the clinic physician. Minor medical problem s requiring a doctor s care or injuries sustained on the job can be attended to at this facility. The convenience of the Walk In Medical Clinic will allow your employees to be efficiently attended to by a qualified physician and prevent them from facing the long waits often seen in the local Emergency Departments. This means that your employee will be able to return to the workplace much quicker after their assessment at the Walk In Medical Clinic. The medical services provided in the walk in clinic are covered by the provincial health insurance (MSI) so a valid Health Card is required. The hours of operation for the Walk In Medical Clinic are Monday to Friday 8:30am 5:00pm and Weekends/Holidays 11:00am 5:00pm.

ORTHOPEDIC INJURY MANAGEMENT CLINIC Medicine in Motion has physicians on staff with their diploma in Sports Medicine. This means that these physicians have a special interest in the assessment, diagnosis, investigation and treatment of bone and muscle injuries and problems. These injuries may be related to a recreational activity or work-related. If investigations of a particular problem are required, a sports medicine physician is able to order an MRI. When necessary, the sports medicine physicians will consult with the MIM physiotherapist and massage therapy team to evaluate progress and suggest other treatments to ensure that an employee has a fast, appropriate recovery. If a particular injury or problem may need a surgical solution then the appropriate referral will be made. A letter outlining the diagnosis and treatment plan is sent to the referring family physician after the assessment and any Worker s Compensation Board forms will be completed by the sports medicine physician. Generally, a referral from a family physician is required in order to see the sports medicine physician. However, we will allow the employees of our Preferred Business Customers to have direct access to our sports medicine physicians within 5 working days, whenever possible.

SOLES IN MOTION Properly fitted footwear is essential to insure comfort and prevent injury during long hours of standing, moving and working in large warehouse and manufacturing facilities. This is particularly important of safety footwear. Soles in Motion is a fully specialized retail outlet connected to MIM designed to provide custom fitted workplace footwear as well as a full range of athletic, orthopedic and casual footwear for the employee and their families. Soles in Motion technicians can provide footwear fittings on site for the employees of our Preferred Business Customers and make recommendations regarding proper workplace safety footwear. The fit of our footwear is guaranteed. In addition, Soles in Motion has a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, Robert Chisholm, on staff. Rob can assess foot and leg mechanical problems which cause pain and injury due to long periods of activity. If necessary, custom foot orthotics can be made to correct foot and ankle mechanical problems that lead to injury and on going pain. There are many professionals that are currently making orthotics, however, there is still only one Gold Standard in the industry in terms of how to get the best fitted orthotic. This Gold Standard is taking a plaster cast impression of a client s feet to produce the orthotic. This is the method that Rob uses. Pre-assessment consultations with Rob to see if orthotics are required are available and he fully guarantees the fit of his orthotics.

Soles in Motion also has custom and off the shelf orthopedic bracing to help support injured or sore joints and allow an employee to get back to work safely. Our bracing technician, Geoff Doak, will ensure that every client has the proper orthopedic brace with the proper fit. Fitness aids are also available from Soles in Motion or those wishing to pursue fitness training at home/work. These include medicine balls, stability balls, exercise tubing and more. Running clinics are available at Soles in Motion in a variety of levels. Building to 5km, Advanced 5km, building to 10km, half marathon and full marathon. A physiotherapy assessment by KD Physical Therapies is included in the clinic. The clinic sizes are limited to ensure that an exceptional experience is had by all participants.
