FOREWORD This guide has been prepared to provide information about rules and regulations of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) in Yaşar University. Graduate education in GSSS is carried out according to The Graduate Education Regulations of Yaşar University. The university has reserved the right to change the content of this study guide which was prepared for informative purposes only. Registration Renewal Students are supposed to renew their registration for forthcoming semester by choosing the lectures filling in course selection form which are suggested by their advisor among the lectures determined by AG at the time of academic calendar. Students are dismissed from Graduate School of Business under the circumstances of not to pay the tuition fee or not to renew their registration for two times consecutively. Candidates whom their registration made are considered as having the students status of which they benefits all their students rights. Exams and Evaluation Exams are categorized into midterm and final exams. Students have to join at least 70% of theoretic and 80% of laboratory part of courses in order to be qualified to attend the final exam. The full grade is 100 in the exams. Exams could be a form of written, oral, written with application and oral with application. Each course requires at least 1 (one) midterm. Total grade is sum of 50% of average midterm exams and 50% of final exam. In order to be considered as successful from a course, the sum of total grade and final exam s grade should be at least 65. The evaluation system used in the exams is demonstrated in the following scheme. POINTS GRADE COEFFICIENT Error in Exams Graduate students can object to the grades in terms of numeric error in their exams. The objections have to be made in the following week after exams. In case of a numeric error regarding announced grade by Graduate School of Business, correction process is come to the decision by AG through relating lecturers request and HDG s recommendation. Grade Average General Point Average is calculated based on the grades taken from lectures for the purpose of completing the lowest course requirements determined by Senate from the beginning of the students acceptance to graduation program. In case of re-take exam, the last grade is added to General Point Average. All grades are demonstrated in students transcripts. Course Acceptance Students who had studied or whose registration canceled in another graduation program, apply the Graduate School of Business for having their previous courses accepted through HDG at the first week of each semester. The acceptance of those courses and the time they obliged to start at are taking into consideration upon a request from HDG and coming to the decision by AG. Registration Cancellation Students, who failed in their courses or thesis, are subjected to the cancellation of registration under the following circumstances: 3
a) To have a GPA less than 1,50 at the end of the first semester. b) To have a GPA less than 2,00 at the end of the second semester or forthcoming semester. c) To fail at the stages of master thesis more than two times consecutively or more than three times at intervals. d) Not to complete the lowest course requirements determined by Senate at 4 (four) semester for thesis programs and 6 (six) semester for non-thesis programs e) To have a GPA less than 2,50 at the end of graduation program. f) To be refused for thesis by jury at thesis stage. g) To be refused for revised thesis by jury at thesis stage. h) To be refused for thesis by jury second times at thesis stage. i) Not to complete the program in certain period of time Registration Close up Registration of those who want to remove their registration of their own accord is taking into consideration upon the request through relating the Head of Department of Graduate School of Business and coming to the decision by the AG. In such case, tuition fee and registration fee are not handing over. The situation of those who remove their registration is announced to relating institutions. Course Re-taking Students have to re-take the courses they failed. In addition, they may raise their grade by taking the same course which they already passed or another course which is equivalent determined by HDG. The application for re-take courses is given at the time of registration to the Graduate School of Business. Special Student Status A candidate, who completed his/her undergraduate program, can be accepted as a student by the Board of Director of University upon a request of HDG and positive sight of AG. These candidates are not considered of having students rights. The condition of courses and regulations are the same with regular students. A certificate is given under the condition of completing the program successfully. The amount of fee per course is determined by Board of Trustee considering proposal from Board of Director of University. Candidates (special students) are limited to take maximum 9 courses. In case of being a regular student via succeeding the procedures in interview, they are limited to confirm 2/3 of total courses upon the request of their supervisor and the decision is made by AG. 4
MASTER PROGRAM WITH THESIS Objective and Scope The aim of Master Program is to provide a way of thinking to the students in such way that they can reach the information through scientific research and acquire the capability of evaluating and interpreting knowledge. Course Requirements Students of Master Program have to take at least 7 (seven) courses in attempt to collect at least 21 credits and master thesis (equal to three courses). Seminar courses are non-credits and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. At most 2 (two) courses can be chosen from undergraduate program under the condition of having not the same courses. In addition courses may be chosen from the other master programs upon the request of HDG and approval of AG. Time The completion time of master programs is 4 (four) semesters which consist of 2 (two) semesters for courses and 2 (two) semesters for thesis. According to this regulation, Graduate School of Business is charge of canceling unsuccessful students registration before the program deadline. Additional time (at most two semesters) can be allocated to students who did not complete the lowest course requirements in two semesters consecutively or have a General Point Average less than 70 over 100 or 2,50 over 4,00 upon a request of supervisors and HDG. Students who do not complete their courses and seminar in 4 (four) semester are dismissed from the Graduate School of Business. Students who fail at the stages of master thesis more than two times consecutively or more than three times at intervals are dismissed. Additional time can be allocated to students who completed their courses and seminar successfully but did not complete their thesis, for defending their master thesis in front of jury, under the condition of having not additional time during courses and seminar period, upon a request of DHG and approval of AG. Supervisor Appointment Determination of courses students take, registration activities and master thesis work are managed by supervisors who are appointed by AG upon the request of HDG. If the characteristics of thesis require more than one supervisor, second supervisor may be appointed. Director of HDG is charging of the issue during the appointment process. The subject of master thesis in graduation program is come to the decision by AG in 1 (one) month after completing courses successfully upon the request of supervisor and director of HDG. Master Thesis Conclusion Students admit their master thesis with 6 (six) copies to HDG in the written form of Thesis/Project Preparation Guideline of Graduate School of Business. Students have to defend 5
their theses which have been sent to Graduate School of Business by HDG in verbal presentation in front of jury. The Jury is appointed by approval of AG upon the request of HDG. The members of jury consist of students supervisor and two more academician in case of having one supervisor or students supervisor and 4 more academician in case of having two supervisor. At least one academician ought to come from a different department in graduation program. If the jury is consisted of three members, second supervisor can not join the Jury. Master thesis dissertation is held by Jury in following month after thesis submission. The time and place of thesis verbal presentation is determined by AG. A Chairman is selected among members of Jury. Thesis dissertation consists of verbal presentation and question-answer part which take minimum 45 minutes and maximum 90 minutes. Presentation is open to audiences. After completion of thesis presentation, Jury may come to the decision as accepted, rejected or revision in a private session. Student is dismissed if the thesis was rejected. Students having revision must make the required modifications in 3 (three) months and present the thesis over again in front of the same jury. If the thesis is rejected at the end of this second presentation, student is dismissed from Graduate School of Business. In case of publishing the thesis either fully or partly, nothing is paid for copyrights. Diploma of Master Program Students submit 6 (six) copies of their master thesis to Graduate School of Business after attending master thesis presentation exam under the condition of completing their thesis presentations successfully and provide the other requirements. The graduation of master program students is decided by AG. Students who completed their master programs are given a Master Program Diploma in form of containing the ratified name of department and the field of science with the signatures of president of Board of Trustee, Rector and Director of Graduate School of Business. 6
NON-THESIS MASTER PROGRAM Objective and Scope The aim of Non- Thesis Master Program is to provide sufficient information about professional matters to the student in detail understanding and show how to apply this information in practical basis. Course Requirements This program consist of 10 (ten) courses by which no less than 30 credits should be collected and a graduation project. Graduation project is non-credits and is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. Students have to register graduation project and prepare a written report at the end of the semester. At most 3 (three) courses can be selected from undergraduate program under the restriction of not having them before. Students may take courses from the other universities upon the request of HDG and decision of AG. Time The completion time of non-master programs is maximum 6 (six) semesters. According to this regulation, Graduate School of Business is charge of canceling unsuccessful students registration before the program deadline. Supervisor Appointment AG determines a supervisor who might be either a lecturer or an instructor with PhD title to the students for course selection and supporting graduation project process in the following 15 days from the beginning of semester. Diploma of Non-Thesis Master Program Students who completed their courses and graduation project successfully are given a Master Program Diploma. Diplomas are given in form of containing the ratified name of department and the field of science with the signatures of president of Board of Trustee, Rector and Director of Graduate School of Business. 7
OTHER REGULATIONS General Point Average is calculated based on credits weight. Credits weight GPA is derived from the sum of credit number of courses times the grades taken divided by total number of credits. Students who are registered in master program are dependent on discipline regulations of higher education. AG may suspend graduation program at most two years for those who have reasonable excuses such as illness, military service, pregnancy etc. Graduation Program students are responsible of making their registration on behalf of themselves in the context of rule and regulation of Graduate School of Business. Students who do not renew their registration can not attend the courses for that semester. This period of time will take into consideration regarding the maximum length required to complete the programs. Students are responsible of being aware of rules and regulations of the Graduate School of Business about their courses, procedures and all activities considering their studentship during the graduation program. 8
