Fiscal federalism, Regulation and Antitrust. Research in progress Technological change, education and their effect on the wage structure. This research project, which uses data from the Bank of Italy Survey of Household Income and Wealth and from ISTAT Labor Force Survey, investigates the impact of technological change (mainly through ICT) on the one hand and shifts towards tertiary education on the other one, on wages and unemployment of Italian workers (adopting a life-cycle perspective). This research project is directed by Prof. F. Biagi and is financed by MIUR and by the University of Padova. Taxation, R&D and Innovation: an empirical analysis for Italy. This research studies the impact of fiscal variables on R&D and on the relationship between R&D and product and process innovation, using a longitudinal dataset from a panel of Italian manufacturing firms from Mediocredito Centrale. This research project is directed by Prof. F. Biagi and is financed by MIUR and by the University of Padova. R&D Investment and the wage structure. This research project, which uses Canadian firm-employee matched longitudinal data (Workplace and Employee Survey, WES), studies the relationship between the adoption of new technologies, the composition of employment and the wage structure. The project is conducted by F. Biagi and Ana Ferrer (University of Calgary). Retirement, human capital accumulation and training. This research project studies the relationship between technological progress, human capital accumulation, and retirement. Using longitudinal data from the Bank of Italy Survey of Household Income and Wealth we study whether there exists robust evidence that individuals with higher technological endowments (proxied by their skills in the use of ICTs) tend to retire later. This research project is directed by Prof. F. Biagi and is financed by the University of Padova and by SDA Bocconi. Determinants of labor demand for Italian firms. This project, which uses data from the Rilevazione Longitudinale su Imprese e Lavoro (ISFOL), investigates the changes in the composition of labor demand and R&D for Italian manufacturing firms. This research project is directed by Prof. F. Biagi. The evolution of poverty and inequality in Italy. This research project uses data from the Bank of Italy Survey of Households Income and Wealth to study the determinants of poverty and inequality in Italy and their evolution in the period 1987-2004. Particular emphasis is given to variables affecting human capital accumulation (family background and the education system). Research concluded in the past four years Human capital, demographic change, wages and unemployment. This research studies empirically the relationship between human capital accumulation, demographic change and labor market outcomes, in an international context. The study, directed by Prof. Claudio Lucifora from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, and by Prof. Giorgio Brunello from the University of Padova, was financed by the European Union within a wider research project titled EDWIN: Inequality in Education.

Models of fiscal federalism. This research project studies models of fiscal federalism compatible with the Italian institutional context and able to insure both equality and efficiency. This research project was directed by Prof. F. Biagi. Structure and evolution of fiscal incentives to firms: the cases of Spain and Ireland. This research studies the evolution of fiscal benefits to firms provided by Spanish Comunidades Autonomas and by Ireland. The problematic relationship between decentralization and State aid is also discussed. Taxation and Firm s Financing. The project studies both theoretically and empirically the effects of changes in marginal tax rates on firms financing decisions. A longitudinal dataset from Centrale dei Bilanci is used. This research project was directed by Prof. F. Biagi and financed by SDA Bocconi. ICT and regional growth. This research project investigates the determinants of growth at the regional level (both nationally and internationally) trying to capture the role of variables affecting demand (technology and organizational changes) and supply (education and human capital accumulation) and leading to ICT adoption and diffusion. This research project was directed by Prof. F. Biagi and financed by SDA Bocconi. Application to Italy of different models of fiscal federalism. This research studies the models of fiscal federalism adopted in various European countries (Spain, Germany and Scotland) and simulates their application to Italy.
