VESZPRÉM UNIVERSITY GEORGIKON FACULTY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES Institute of Animal Sciences DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY Supervisor: PROF DR. FERENC SZABÓ D.SC. ANALYSE OF PURE BRED BELGIAN BLUE BEEF CATTLE POPULATIONS SUMMARY OF DOCTORAL (Ph.D.) THESIS Written by ZSOMBOR WAGENHOFFER KESZTHELY 2001

1. INTRODUCTION Belgian Blue beef cattle breed has a relatively short history in Hungary. There were some promising results of the use of few double muscled bulls in crossing during the seventies, however these attempts did not prove to be long-lasting. The breakthrough came at the beginning of the nineties when some strongly motivated people, experts on their field decided to introduce the breed in Hungary. The first calf was born from embryo transfer in 1992 in Ostffyasszonyfa where the core pure-bred population (around 100 heads) can be found today. The main objective of the Hungarian Belgian Blue Breeders Association is to make the Belgian Blue one of the leading terminal beef breed. The national and international results of crossings trials with dairy and beef breeds justify the distinguished role of Belgian Blue among terminal breeds. 2

2. OBJECTIVES As the breed was introduced in Hungary nearly a decade ago, only little information is available on the Hungarian pure-bred stock (most of the publications concern the results of crossing trials). The main objective of the author was therefore to give some new and useful information to the breeders. He tried to find topics that have not been investigated so far and are interesting to deal with. It was not too easy to find these issues as there is a research team in Belgium having been experimenting with Belgian Blue for more than 30 years. Besides, the size of the Hungarian pure-bred herd is so limited that it is difficult to find significant (P<0,01) results. In his research work the author investigated the main parameters (gestation length, birth weight, yearling weight and height) of Belgian and Hungarian pure bred Belgian Blue populations. He also carried out body measurements and investigated the development of different parts of the body as a function of age as well as performed pelvis measurements in six beef breeds (Belgian Blue, Hereford, Simmental, Shaver, Lincoln Red, Angus). Belgian Blue colostrum and milk analyses were carried out and the results were compared to other beef breeds (Hereford, Limousin, Blonde d Aquitaine, Angus, Simmental and Hungarian Grey). 3

3. MATHERIAL AND METHODS 3.1. PROGENY TEST Data were collected from the Belgian field progeny test s result, which is published annually by the Herd Book. Three groups were created because of the change of evaluation methods during the investigated period (1992-1999). Group I. includes parameters evaluated between 1992-1995 which are: caesarian sections (%) and conformation of calves (%). Group II. includes conformation of calves evaluated according to a scale 5 through 9 points. Group III. includes parameters that were analyzed between 1992 and 1999 which are: gestation length (day); birth weight (kg); yearling weight (kg) and height at withers (cm). Considering that the aim of the study was the evaluation and comparison of different pure bred Belgian Blue cattle populations, mean results of the progeny in Belgium was calculated and analyzed. No sire ranking was made. 3.2. BODY MEASUREMENTS The investigations were carried out in a pure bred Belgian Blue stock in Hungary between 1997 and 1999 in 15 heifers and 7 bulls. The following parameters were measured: height at withers; body length; chest girth; transversal body length; rump width I.-II.-III. (measured at three anatomic points); shin girth; weight and age. Furthermore daily weight gain; weight gain during the examination period and relative growth (kg gain/kg live weight/day) were calculated. Body measurements were 4

carried out monthly and every two months by the end of the examination period between 9 or 10 a.m. Two groups of animals having approximately the same age were selected. Average age of the animals at the beginning of the investigation was 198 and 278; and 679 and 522 days at the end for Group A. and Group B. respectively. Age of the animals was corrected so as to be comparable with each other and with the results of other publications. 3.3. PELVIC MEASUREMENTS Investigations were carried out to measure pelvis dimensions of heifers (n=48) and cows (n=104) of six breeds (Belgian Blue, Simmental, Hereford, Shaver, Lincoln Red and Angus) kept in Hungary. The measurements were performed by a specialist veterinarian through rectal examination using the Vissac-pelvimeter. Horizontal, vertical and transversal measures were investigated. Besides area of the pelvic inlet was calculated using the equation of ellipse. The animals were also weighed. 3.4. COLOSTRUM AND MILK ANALYSES Because of the limited number of purebred Belgian Blue animals in Hungary, colostrum and milk analyses were realized in Belgium. Samples were taken from cows of 8 farms in February 2000 by hand milking. Colostrum (n=10) samples were taken right after calving and also in the first 4 days. Milk samples were taken from cows being in the third part of their lactation. The results were compared to 6 other beef breeds (Simmental, Hereford, Angus, Blonde d Aquitaine, Limousin, and 5

Hungarian Grey) kept in Hungary. The analytical analyses were performed by the Chemical laboratory of Kaposvár University (Hungary) as well as by the Milk Analysing Laboratory of Battice (Belgium). Besides basic components (fat, lactose, protein, SNF) also whey protein and casein content were investigated. 3.5. STATISTICAL ANALYSES Besides descriptive statistics (mean, sd, cv%, min and max) and because the data showed normal distribution, two-way analyses of variance was used with breed and combined age and sex groups as the fixed effects with interactions. Correlations, uni- and multi-variable as well as Stepwise regression analyses were performed and as post-hoc test Student-Newman-Keuls probe was used. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 9.0 for Windows. 6

4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 4.1. PROGENY TEST In 1999 the gestation length was by 0.2 days longer (282.6 days); birth weight by 1.0 kg heavier (45 kg); weight at 13 months by 31.2 kg heavier (362 kg) and height at withers at 13 months by 1.4 cm higher (112.6 cm) than in 1992 in the Belgian progeny population. Birth weight of pure bred Belgian Blues in Hungary was 5.0 kg heavier than the Belgian progenies. The reason for that increased birth weight could be the high quality genetic background of the Hungarian stock and the effect of the recipients that were large sized Simmental and Holstein cows. Yearling weight of the Belgian Blue population in Hungary was 400 kg and height at withers was 112 cm. Although these results are slightly better than that of the Belgian progenies but they are lower than the results of progeny (by 6 per cent) and performance (by 20 per cent) test made in selection center in Belgium. It suggests that there is some genetic potential to be exploited by the Hungarian stock. 4.2. BODY MEASUREMENTS Growing peculiarities of Belgian Blue proved to be similar to those of other beef breeds. Four 100 daylong ontogeny stages were identified in the examination period. Body measurement indices were calculated to demonstrate better the relationship of the different parts of the body during growth. No significant difference was found between sex. The relation of chest girth and transversal body length shows that parameters related to width are more important than those related to length. The 7

rump index is high (364 in the case of bulls and 361 for heifers). Stepwise regression analysis shows that beside chest girth (r=0.960), the 2 nd rump width (r=0.958) correlates (P<0.01) with live weight the most. This is not surprising as this part of the body of the Belgian Blue is particularly well muscled. Strong (r>0.75; P<0.01) correlation was found except in the case of 3 rd rump width between the different parts of the body. This may be deduced that during the examined period the parts of the body are developing similary. Having studied the relative growth rate of the animals (gain per day per unit of body weight) differences were found between growing heifers and bulls. Up to the age of 450 days heifers, then bulls have higher relative growth rate (P<0.01). Bulls keep on their important growth capacity for long, which means that they can be fattened up to 650-750 kg and produce lean meat. 4.3. PELVIS MEASUREMENTS Results show that Belgian Blue heifers and cows have narrower and smaller birth canal than other beef breeds. The high percentage of difficult calving of Belgian Blue cows is mainly due to the unfavorable anatomy of the birth canal (15 cm for transversal; 13.3 cm for vertical; 14.4 cm for horizontal and 165.5 cm 2 for area). Hereford heifers and cows proved to have the second least favorable pelvic outlet (P<0.01). Significant (P<0.001) differences were found between the overall inner pelvic dimensions of heifers and cows which is mainly due to calving. Year effect was not proved to be significant. There is no significant relation between body weight and the inner dimensions of the pelvis 8

(Belgian Blue animals were the heaviest (541 kg) among the breeds and had the smallest and narrowest birth canal: 13.8 cm transversal; 12.8 cm for vertical; 13 cm for horizontal and 132 cm 2 for area). Most significant differences between cows were found in the case of transversal dimension of pelvis, while heifers showed the highest variance in horizontal dimension. We can conclude that the measurement of the inner pelvic dimensions is a very useful and effective method to predict difficult calving and also in the selection of easy calving lines. 4.4. COLOSTRUM AND MILK ANALYSES Significant differences (at 0.05 and 0.01 level) were found between Belgian Blue and other beef breeds in lactose, whey and casein content of both colostrum and milk. During the first five days after calving the rate of solid matter was high but this was not confirmed statistically. The high proportion of solid matter is mainly due to the high rate of whey protein. Lactose content of Belgian Blue colostrum had been already high (3.3%) in the day of calving while in the case of other breeds it reached the level of 3-4% by the 3 rd or 4 th day after calving. Belgian Blue milk (during lactation) has the lowest (4.8%) lactose content among the examined breeds. Belgian Blue had the highest whey protein and lowest casein content both of colostrum and milk. Milk composition of Belgian Blue was the closest to our aboriginal beef breed, the Hungarian Grey. 9

5. NEW FINDINGS The author was first in Hungary to carry out investigations in purebred Belgian Blue stock. His research work resulted in the following new findings: 1. Belgian Blue has kept on developping in the last decade (1992-1999) which means +0.2 day for gestation length; +1kg for birth weight; +31.2 kg for yearling weight and +1.4 cm for height at withers at 13 months. 2. The Hungarian purebred stock is competitive with the Belgian population as far as birth weight, yearling weight, height at withers and body conformation are concerned. 3. Different ontogeny stages were identified during the age of 200-650 days, which is conform to the results of the investigations carried out in other beef breeds. 4. Strong correlations among different parts of the body suggest uniform growth dynamic in the examined period. No real sexual dimorphism was detected. 5. Besides chest girth, 2 nd rump width correlates the most with body weight, therefore it can be used as an effective predictor of live weight. 6. Belgian Blue had the narrowest and most unfavorable shaped pelvic inlet that seems to be the main reason of dystocia. 10

7. Colostrum composition of Belgian Blue is closer to British than to French beef breeds with relatively high proportion of lactose and whey protein. 8. Belgian Blue colostrum and milk have the highest whey protein and lowest casein content among the examined beef breeds. 11

5. CONCLUSIONS 1. Gestation length; birth weight; conformation; weight and height at 13 months show increasing tendency during the period 1992-1999. This improvement is only partly due to genetic progress (mh gene) but the real reason for that is the development of breeding technology and nutrition. The rate of caesarian sections is near 100% nowadays in Belgium and there is no selection for easy calving. Breeding method that is used in Belgium is justified only under such special conditions where the price of double muscled animals is significantly higher than other beef breeds. 2. Comparison of some parameters of the Hungarian and Belgian pure bred population show that the principal aim of the Hungarian Belgian Blue Herd Book has been achieved: the Hungarian stock seems to be competitive on international level and has the adequate genetic background to produce mating bulls for commercial crossing. 3. Growing peculiarities of Belgian Blue proved to be similar to those of other beef breeds. Relative growth rate of heifers was higher till the age of 450 days then bulls had better growth pattern. 4. Strong correlations among different parts of the body suggest uniform growth dynamic in the examined period. 12

5. Besides chest girth, 2 nd rump width showed the strongest correlation with body weight. That points out to the conformation peculiarity of the breed, that this part of the body is extremely muscled. 6. Results of pelvis measurements show that Belgian Blue has the narrowest and most unfavorable shaped pelvic inlet, which seems to be the main reason of dystocia. 7. Significant differences (P<0.01) were found between heifers and cows pelvic dimensions in every breeds, which is mainly due to first calving. Age had no significant effect on pelvic parameters. 8. Colostrum and milk analyses show significant differences (P<0.01) for lactose, whey protein and casein content between Belgian Blue and other beef breeds. Protein as well as whey content of colostrum 0 to 5 days after calving was the highest in case of Belgian Blue. The most apparent difference was found in the case of whey protein and casein ratio, which was the highest among the breed both for colostrum and for milk. 13
