Work experience Overview Geoff Sims has sound work experience in administration of national health statistics programs. From 1996 to 2002 he was Head of the Health Division at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, with responsibility for national statistical programs including hospital morbidity, mental health, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, the national death index and public health. From 1988 to 1995 Geoff was senior executive manager of the social statistics program at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, where he managed development and outputs for national health, disability, mental health and nutrition surveys, private hospital statistics, national mortality data processing, demography and a range of social statistics programs outside the health field. Geoff Sims has worked with statistics on subjects including public finance, prices, earnings, community services, crime and justice, culture and recreation. During his early career Geoff was a senior statistical consultant (ABS outpost) in the Department of Social Security and was Deputy Commonwealth Statistician and State Government Statist in South Australia. In early 2002, Geoff Sims established Geoff Sims Consulting Pty Ltd and has worked since that time as a consultant in the health statistics field. His specialty is clinical registries. Managing national statistics programs Managed Australian Bureau of Statistics South Australian office, 1983-87, with 200 staff working across a wide range of economic and social statistics. Managed ABS social statistics national program 1988-95 including the topics health, welfare, demography, crime and justice, culture and recreation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander statistics and social statistics standards and classifications. Established and managed ABS centres for causes of death coding and private hospital establishments (both in ABS Brisbane office), crime and justice (Melbourne), culture and recreation (Adelaide) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics (Darwin). Managed content development and statistical outputs for ABS national interview surveys: Health 1989 and 1995, Time Use 1992, Disability and Ageing 1993, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 1994, Nutrition 1995 and Mental Health and Wellbeing 1997. Managed AIHW Health Division 1996-2002. Oversaw production of biennial reports Australia s Health 1998 and 2000 and numerous regular and ad-hoc health reports, including Australian Hospital Statistics (annual), Mental Health Services in Australia (annual), Cancer in Australia (annual), Chronic Diseases and Associated Risk Factors in Australia 2001, Australia s Children: Their health and wellbeing (1998 and 2002), National Drug Strategy Household Surveys (1998 and 2000).
