At Ave Maria, Mass is celebrated three times a day, Latin is a required subject, and divorced Catholics are not welcomeasfacultymembers.openedlastfallandcurrentlyenrolling122students,itisthebestfinancedandthe mostambitiousofaboutadozenneworplannedromancatholicinstitutionsofaveryconservativebent. AfteraquartercenturyinwhichnonewCatholiccollegeswereestablished,mostofthosebeingfoundednoware ledbytraditionalistswhofeelthemajorityofamerica's230catholiccollegeshavestrayedfromthetruthofthe Catholicfaith. The Rev. Joseph D. Fessio, a Jesuit and Ave Maria's chancellor, shares that view. He is bitterly critical of the UniversityofSanFrancisco,theJesuitinstitutionwherehetaughtforalmosttwodecades,forsuchdecisionsas hiringagayformerpriestasheadofmarriage and familycounseling,andallowingstudentstostagetheplaythe VaginaMonologues.Inafund raisingappealforavemariahewrote,"manycatholicinstitutions...haveceasedto beplaceswherethefullnessofcatholictruthisjoyfullyandvigorouslytaught,defendedandproclaimed." Dissatisfied with existing Catholic higher education, the new colleges aspire to train graduates who will raise a strong and orthodox Catholic intellectual voice in the debates over stem cell research, gay marriage, and other socialissues.theystrivetomaintainaconservativecampuslife,wherestudentsandfacultymembersattendmass frequently,premaritalsexisstrictlyforbidden,andgaysupportgroupshavenoplace. Thenewinstitutionsareananswertotheprayersofsomefamilies.KathleenMacLean,fromNewHampshire,has adaughterwhoisafreshmanatavemaria."wereadaboutcatholiccollegeswhichdon'twanttoputupcrucifixes intheirclassrooms,"shesays."it'slikethey'reapologizingforbeingcatholic." YetconservativeCatholiccolleges,asmallhandfulofwhichwerefoundedinthe1970sinthewakeoftheSecond VaticanCouncil(1962 65)andthesubsequentliberalizationofCatholichighereducation,appeartohavehadonly aminimalimpactoncatholichighereducationoramericansocietyatlarge.itremainstobeseenwhetherthenew cropwillhaveabroaderinfluence. AGenerousPatron IfAveMaria'sbenefactor,ThomasS.Monaghan,hashisway,theinstitutionwillbeamajorintellectualforce.He intends to transform remote pepper and tomato fields in Immokalee, in southwest Florida, into a permanent campusforupto6,000students.hisplansincludeacatholicchurchwiththelargestseatingcapacityofanyinthe UnitedStatesandthelargestcrucifixintheworld.Mr.Monaghan,thefounderofDomino'sPizza,hascommitted $200 million to the university. "My mission is to help as many people as possible get to heaven," says Mr. Monaghan,67.Thebestwayhecandothat,hesays,istopromoteorthodoxCatholichighereducation. Raisedinanorphanageandfosterhomes,Mr.Monaghanreportedlymade$1 billionwhenhesolddomino'spizza in1998.hehadalreadytakenwhathecalls"amillionaire'svowofpoverty";hesoldhisyachts,airplanes,andthe DetroitTigersbaseballteam,andstoppedflyingfirstclass. For the last 20 years he has devoted himself to conservative Catholic causes. One of his early decisions was to financetheconstructionofanewcathedralinmanagua,nicaragua,toreplacetheoldonethatwasdestroyedbya

1972earthquake.Themovewasastandforthefaith."Nicaragua,"heexplains,"wascontrolledbytheSandinistas, whowereatheistsandcommunists."hewentontotakeoverthefailingnicaraguanbranchoftheuniversityof Mobile,aBaptistcollege,in2000,andturneditintoAveMariaCollegeoftheAmericas. Beforehislatestventure,inFlorida,Mr.MonaghanhadopenedanotherAveMariaCollege,inYpsilanti,Mich.,in 1998.Twoyearslater,heestablishedaseparateinstitution,AveMariaSchoolofLaw,inAnnArbor.Mr.Monaghan had planned to establish the new university in Ann Arbor, too, but the project ran aground when local officials refusedtograntzoningauthorization.somr.monaghantooktheprojecttosouthwestflorida,anareaheknew fromregularvacationsinnearbynaples. Inwhatappearstobeareal estatefirst,thecampusisbeingbuiltjointlywithanewtown,alsotobecalledave Maria.DesignedinthestyleofMr.Monaghan'sfavoritearchitect,FrankLloydWright,thecampusisscheduledto openin2006.barroncolliercompanies,amajorfloridareal estatedeveloper,saysthepresenceoftheacademic institutionwillmakethehousingmoreattractivetobuyers. The developer is donating 900 acres for the university, which will be built on both sides of a grassy mall in the centeroftown.thehugechurchwillbeatoneendofthemall.shopsandcafes,smalllakes,andagolfcoursefor donorstotheuniversityarealsoplanned. While other Catholic educators are sometimes irritated by its holier than thou image, Ave Maria University has hadnotroubleattractingstudentsandprofessorswhoshareacommondesiretoreturntotheircatholicroots. The institution has received more than 100 applications for some faculty job openings, says William K. Riordan, deanofthefaculty. Themajorityofstudentshavecomefromoutofstate.ClareRobidoux,afreshmanfromSt.Louis,Mo.,sayssheis gladtobeataninstitutionwherestudentsandfacultymembersregularlyspendtimeinprayer."havingagood spirituallifehelpsyoudotherightthingandbeholy,"shesays. TherightthingforstudentsatAveMariaincludesbringingChristmasgiftstomigrantfarmworkers'children.Italso includes conducting sidewalk"counseling" of women arriving at a local abortion clinic every Friday, and praying outloudagainstabortioninfrontofaplannedparenthoodofficeonsaturdaymornings. The administration supports those actions and provides vans to transport students to them, reflecting Mr. Monaghan'sownstronglyheldviews.Hehaslongraisedmoneyfromotherwealthypeopletodefeatpoliticians whosupportabortionrightsandtooverturnlawsgrantingequalrightstohomosexuals.hisconservativeactivism soroiledthenationalorganizationforwomenthatin1989thegrouporganizedaboycottofdomino'spizza. HolierThanThou? MainstreamCatholiceducatorsareoftenpeevedbyperceptionsthatAveMariaandtheothernewinstitutionsset themselvesapartnotjustfromsecularcolleges,butfrommostcatholicones,too."whatbothersus,"saysmonika K.Hellwig,aformerprofessoroftheologywhoispresidentoftheAssociationofCatholicCollegesandUniversities, "isthattheythinkwe'renotproperlycatholic." TheRev.CharlesL.Currie,presidentoftheAssociationofJesuitCollegesandUniversities,saysthenewinstitutions "tendtogetveryjudgmental.thereismuchmoreauthenticallycatholicgoingonatcatholicuniversitiesthanjoe Fessiowouldgiveuscreditfor." AndAliceGallin,formerexecutivedirectoroftheAssociationofCatholicCollegesandUniversitiesandascholar inresidence at College of New Ro chelle, a Catholic college, says the new conservative Catholic colleges are like overlyprotectiveparentsinthewaythattheytrytomaintainstrictcampusenvironments.ratherthanallowing studentstodeveloptheirownintellectualandmoraljudgments,"thisgroupplacesmoreemphasisonhowoften thestudentsgotomassandwhatkindoffilmsorplayscanbeshownoncampus;alltheseneuroticpoints,"says Ms.Gallin.

ButsomeconservativeCatholicsaredistressedbythewayCatholicinstitutionsinrecentdecadeshaveseemedto embracethemoresofthelargersociety.about30catholiccollegesthisspringarestagingperformancesofthe VaginaMonologues,afeministplaycelebratingwomen'spowerovertheirbodiesandtheirsexuality.Earlierthis year,theuniversityofnotredamehelditsfirst"queerfilmfestival."andlastyearabout70facultymembersat Georgetown University signed a statement protesting a commencement speech by Cardinal Francis Arinze, a seniorvaticanofficial,becausethecardinalusedtheoccasiontocondemnhomosexuality. A recent study conducted by Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, which promotes conservative values on Catholic campuses, concluded that Catholic colleges did a poor job of imparting church teachings to undergraduates. The study,"are Catholic Colleges Leading Students Astray?," which was published last year, surveyed 7,200 students at 38 Catholic institutions in their freshman year and again as seniors. Significantlymoreoftheseniorsapprovedofabortion,homosexualmarriages,andcasualsexthandidthesame studentsasfreshmen. AmongCatholics"thereisasmallbutvocalcontingentthatfeelstheoldcertaintiesaregone,"saysMs.Hellwig,of thecatholiccolleges'association."theyfeelbetrayed." Indirectly,VaticanIIcontributedtothedeepchangesatCatholicinstitutions.Thecouncilcalledforarespectfor modern learning, the autonomy of the social sciences, and a greater role for lay Catholics in running Catholic institutions. Inresponse,Catholiccollegesincreasinglyacceptedlaypeopleastrusteesandsenioradministrators.Thedecisive blow came in 1967 at a meeting of presidents of leading Catholic universities, called by the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, Notre Dame's president at the time. The "Land O'Lakes statement" they produced, named for the Wisconsintownwheretheymet,declaredindependencefromchurchcontrol. TheNewInstitutions ForasmallnumberofveryconservativeCatholics,thatwasthelaststraw.TheLandO'Lakesstatementproduced "a wholesale loss of Catholic identity" at most Catholic institutions, according to the mission statement of ChristendomCollege,inFrontRoyal,Va.,whichwasfoundedin1977."Theveryexistenceofobjectivetruthwasin manycasesdenied." ForafewCatholiceducators,theonlysolutionwastoestablishnewinstitutions."Theonlysurprise,"saysDavid O'Brien,ahistorianofAmericanCatholicismatCollegeoftheHolyCross,inWorcester,Mass.,"isthatittookso longforthesecollegestoarrive." AsimilarphenomenonhadalreadyoccurredinProtestanthighereducationearlyinthe20thcentury.AsAmerica's majority religion and its colleges adapted to the relaxed mores of modern life, some conservatives grew dissatisfied.biolauniversity,inlamirada,calif.,establishedin1908,andbobjonesuniversity,ingreenville,s.c., established in 1927, were created at a time when "Protestant fundamentalists broke off and started their own institutions,"sayswilliamd.dinges,anassociateprofessorwhospecializesincatholicismandcultureatcatholic University of America, in Washington. "Now that Catholicism is becoming more accommodating to modern culture,somecatholicsaredoingsomethingsimilar." The late 1960s and 1970s saw the founding of four colleges with a staunchly conservative Catholic character: Christendom College; Magdalen College, in Warner, N.H.; Thomas Aquinas College, in Santa Paula, Calif.; and ThomasMoreCollegeoftheLiberalArts,inMerrimack,N.H. In1990theVaticanattemptedtorestoreadegreeofthechurch'sauthorityoverCatholichighereducationwhen Pope John Paul II issued Ex corde Ecclesiae literally: from the heart of the church. After its release, American bishopssaidcatholictheologianshadtoseekamandatumcertifyingthattheywereteaching"authenticcatholic doctrine."thecontroversialorderappearstohavebeenlargelyignored.theepisodeonlyreinforcedthedriveto establishnewinstitutions.

Theinstitutionsfoundedinthelastfewyears,likethosefromthe1970s,advertisetheirunquestioningobedience tothevatican,oftenexpressedas"faithfulnesstothemagisteriumofthecatholicchurch."allaresmall,andmany have adopted a "great books" approach: a large core of required liberal arts courses, stressing the reading of classics of western civilization, starting from ancient Greece and Rome, in history, philosophy, literature, and theology.somecelebratemassinlatin,apracticelargelyendedbyvaticanii. Manyofthenewinstitutionsplacegreatemphasisonacademicexcellence.FranciscanUniversityofSteubenville, inohio alongwithavemaria,theonlytwofulluniversitiesamongtheorthodoxinstitutions hasbeenranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top tier of Midwest colleges for the third year in a row. It enrolls 2,200 students. Steubenvillewasfoundedasacollegein1946,butafteralmostcollapsingitwastransformedbytheRev.Michael Scanlan,whotookoveraschancellorin1974.Inadditiontostrengtheningtheinstitutionacademically,hegaveita strong "charismatic Catholic" character. That orientation has since diminished somewhat, but campus prayer meetingsstillexhibitsomeoftheexuberancenormallyassociatedwithpentecostalism,includingarmwavingand speakingintongues. AveMariaSchoolofLawisalsoexcelling.Lastyearitsfirstgraduatingclassscoredhighestamonggraduatesofall Michiganlawschoolsinthestate'sbarexam.Inavideotapedmessageattheirgraduationceremony,U.S.Attorney GeneralJohnAshcrofttoldstudentstheywere"trailblazers"forhavingchosenAveMaria. Rebels Facultymembersdrawntotheneworthodoxinstitutionsareoftenseenbytheirpeersatbestasidealists,atworst astroublemakers.thecareeroffatherfessio,avemariauniversity'schancellor,illustratestheconstanttension between mainstream Catholic higher education and the small minority of Catholic academics who reject the directionithastaken. As a young theology teacher at the University of San Francisco in the mid 1970s, he founded the St. Ignatius Institutetopromoteagreat bookseducation,inresponsetoaliberalizingoftheuniversity'scurriculum.twoyears laterhefoundedignatiuspresstopublishconservativecatholicthinkers,includingcardinaljosephratzinger,the Vatican'sdoctrinalwatchdogandFatherFessio'smentorsincethetimehedidhisdoctoralstudiesattheUniversity ofregensburg,ingermany. ManyatSanFranciscoviewedFatherFessioandthesmallgrouparoundhimasdoctrinaireelitistswhoopposed the university's attempts to engage with modern society. In 1987 Father Fessio was fired as director of the St. IgnatiusInstitute,butallowedtocontinueteaching.Thenin2001,thesimmeringconflictcametoaheadwhenSan Francisco's new president, the Rev. Stephen A. Privett, fired the institute's then head and his assistant and revampedtheunit. The traditionalists did not take the move lying down. Supporters called on alumni to withhold donations to the university. And Father Fessio and his colleagues reconstituted the institute as a small independent institution, CampionCollege,justahalf blockbeyondtheuniversityofsanfrancisco'scampus. Themovewasseenasanactofinsubordination,andtheheadoftheJesuitsinCaliforniaorderedFatherFessioto LosAngeles,totakeupapostasanassistanthospitalchaplain.Heacquiesced,butMr.MonaghanandAveMaria University'spresident,NicholasJ.HealyJr.,appealedtotheSuperiorGeneraloftheJesuits,inRome,whoagreed toallowfatherfessiotojointhenewuniversityasitschancellor. TheTruth,Period TheneworthodoxcollegesareoftenseenasattemptstorecreatethemorestructuredandinsularCatholichigher educationofthe1950s,withitsclearanswersandgreatcertainties.mr.reilly,ofthecardinalnewmansociety, saysthat'snotthecase."thereisanunderstandingthatfreeacademicinterchangeisacentralpartofacademic education," he says. But within limits. Students at the new institutions will be allowed to debate controversial

issues like abortion and gay rights in class, he says, but professors will be expected to uphold the church's orthodoxy."facultymembers,"hesays,"wouldnotdebate." NEWCONSERVATIVECATHOLICCOLLEGES HereareseveralconservativeCatholiccollegesrecentlyfoundedorbeingplanned: CampionCollege,asmalltwo yearinstitutionofferinganintensive"greatbooks"education,wasopenedin2002 by the founders of the St. Ignatius Institute of the University of San Francisco. It is planning a branch in Washington,D.C. HolySpiritCollegeisbeingestablishednearLansing,Mich.RustyHills,aformerchairmanofthestate'sRepublican Party and chancellor of the college, says that in its various disciplines it will focus on such controversial social issuesasabortion,cloning,anddoctor assistedsuicide.
