Summer Session III 2014 Distance Learning Aggregate Survey Results In order to strengthen UWG s distance and distributed learning programs, separate evaluations have been developed for distance courses. These evaluations specifically address issues to ensure that the technology used is appropriate, and that students are satisfied with their learning experiences. Each term a Student Evaluation is distributed to all students enrolled in distance learning courses. The evaluation is made available online to those enrolled in web-based courses. The evaluations were developed by the Distance Learning Administrator and a team of faculty experienced in distance teaching. Evaluation results, including a compilation of student comments, are reported to each department chair, and then forwarded to the respective faculty. The Distance and Distributed Education Center retains copies of all evaluations. Data collected is used to help determine which courses need to be offered, the effectiveness of the interaction, and how training and support services can be improved. Our university s selected online course delivery tool, Desire2Learn (called CourseDen), also allows for formative assessment and evaluation by the instructor, who can track student usage patterns. Survey results for an individual course, are available upon request from distance@westga.edu Information: Distance Education Student Survey Results Distance Ed Survey STUDENT Summer Session III 2014 201405 The University of West Georgia UWG D L TDI MPI O N Mean Q1 How do you prefer to access your online classes? Response Rate: 67.92% (36 of 53) 1 I liked how, with online courses, I don't have to worry about trying to fit my classes around my work schedule. This has helped greatly, as I would have been unable to take these classes while working full time this summer. 2 time management. 3 I loved this course. I liked that the prof added video lectures! 4 5 I enjoyed being able to do things on my own time and since I have a busy schedule, I need the flexibility to do things when I can. I'm an over-achiever so I could go faster than the actual class schedule and finish the class two weeks before the end of the session. 6 The online course is accessible through any computer that has internet capabilities. 7 Online allows me to attend school. I could not otherwise. 8 The flexibility it allowed for my schedule 9 It allowed me to maintain my employment while furthering my education. 10 Being able to get ahead on my work 11 not having to drive to campus 12 It was 100% online. Flexibility to work on my time schedule was the best. 13 Really gave me the freedom to work at my on pace while still having a deadline for course work 14 IT MAKE ME STAY ON MY WORK EVERYDAY. SO I LOVE THE MOTIVATION. 15 The flexibility 16 I like how i can work when I have time. 17 I liked the easy accessibility and the fact that I could all the assignments when it was convenient for me. 18 Knowing ahead of time my schedule and how to work with it 19 I can work on the class when I have time. At two in the morning if I am awake I can attend class in my PJ's 20 It was convenient. 21 Easy work load able to get it done without help 22 Like the fact I can semi work at my own pace. 23 that I was able to do it around my kids schedule so I did not take too much time away from them. 24 I could work ahead and at my own paste, as long as I had my work turned in by the due date. 25 I was able to do classes while traveling for work. 26 Easy to understand 27 I can get on anytime I needed to. 28 Not having to drive to campus

29 It was easy to access and complete assignments at any time. 30 it was online 31 The fact that it was online. I'm taking three classes this semester and it was convenient for to have at least that was completely online. 32 Everthing it fit to my schedule 33 The option to "go to class" at any time and review notes and read discussions and course materials. 34 I can study anytime 35 How the professors made sure they interacted with their students. 36 The set up. Question: What did you dislike about the online portion of this course? Response Rate: 62.26% (33 of 53) 1 Sometimes it is hard to get in contact with the teachers. 2 hidden assignments 3 nothing. 4 I dislike the lack of resources because some classes offer only powerpoint presentations and make it harder to absorb the information without an online lecture. 5 Nothing! 6 There is nothing that I dislike. 7 The lack of interpersonal exposure 8 I felt as if asking questions was something I should keep to a minimum. My teachers encourage questions but I feel as if it should be really important to write an email about it. 9 It was harder to understand a couple of things 10 Hard to communicate with professor 11 I still miss the face-to-face experience of a real classroom. 12 Do not like not being able to talk face-to-face with the instructor 13 NOTHING REALLY 14 Nothing. 15 Its a little all over the place bc of D2L and wiki. 16 There wasn't really anything I disliked. 17 Timing 18 The Professors set up their classes different. One will put the assignments or other readings in one place another will put them in another place. Trying to find assignments or homework is never easy. I have been using Course Den for almost three years and the system that was being used in Spring semester of 2012, even though it was said to be outdated, was much more consistent in its set up from class to class. For some reason the calender of events at the bottom of the main page does not always list all the deadlines for each class. I generally have to spend extra time going into each class site and making my own list of due dates. Not this semester but in a previous semester I missed an assignment due to the confusion of trying to figure out due dates for assignments. Course Den has been changed at least three times since I have been a student. I do not believe that any of the changes brought about improvement only confusion and stress for the student. 19 I had no issues with it. 20 It was more difficult and a hassle to talk to my classmates and teacher 21 I was not able to access much of it on my smart phone. 22 I could not see what I missed on a test or quiz, and I could not see what the correct answers were. 23 Deadlines were hard to meet sometimes due to my busy work schedule and limited internet access. 24 No face to face interaction 25 How little the professor responded back to my emails.

26 not being able to discuss the information with classmates and instructor 27 it was online 28 The extreme work load 29 Nothing 30 The 4 week schedule is intense and was somewhat grueling. I do not think I have retained best the subject studied. 31 Noting 32 The maintenance will shut it down at 10 on Fridays when things are not due until at least 11:59 33 it was a good class. Question: What suggestions would you make for future online courses? Response Rate: 60.38% (32 of 53) 1 It would have been helpful to be able to access the classes a day or two before classes started- so I could get ahead on reading and preparing for the classes to start. When my two online classes started this semester I was swamped, because I assignments due that day. 2 none 3 at least 1 face to face meeting with the prof and fellow students. I miss having a personal connection. 4 I would like to see more activities rather than predominately discussions. 5 Add more online classes. 6 I have none 7 n/a 8 N/A 9 Better line of communication 10 11 I would recommend professors putting up more frequent recorded videos of themselves talking to the class. It would provide more of a feeling of their presence in the class. In the message board/discussion section, pressing the enter key often erased all that had been written before hitting the key. Maybe a glitch -- maybe user error. But it happened to my 2-3 times. 12 Possibly create a chat room type thing where you can constantly talk back and fourth with professor or students when online 13 I THINK EVERY THING IS OKAY WITH ME. MORE SPACES SHOULD BE ALLOWED FOR CLASS REGIDTRATION 14 Nothing 15 I wish that everything was simple and easier to use. 16 Don't change anything because it works just fine the way it is. 17 Be aware of the timing for certain assignments such as projects 18 Course Den need to be set up the same for each class. 19 I do not have any suggestions at this time. 20 I enjoyed the online class more than I thought I would 21 I would love to see some history courses online. I would rather take them at UWG then to be a transient at another Ga university. 22 To make it possible to see what was missed and show the correct answers after you submit your answers. 23 Open all assignments at once and give one due date for everything for summer classes because people are working and traveling and can't always have constant internet access. 24 more interaction online. 25 Take the online courses. 26 Make more active use of the discussion boards part of the course 27 have the teachers more interactive and have grades up quicker

28 Just because it's online doesn't mean there has to be a ridiculous amount of busy work. 29 I wish more classes were online 30 Short session courses should be no less than 8 weeks. 31 More flexible deadlines 32 To be precise about the assignments. Question: What additional student services would you like to see made available to online students? Response Rate: 50.94% (27 of 53) 1 Perhaps an easier way to contact the professors than through email? 2 i dont know 3 none 4 I would like the books to be available online because summer classes are shorter and the books are bought and used for a few weeks and then never again. 5 I can't think of any. 6 Not sure. 7 I think students should have the chance to review syllabus before signing up for an online class. 8 Nothing comes to mid 9 n/a 10 N/A 11 n/a 12 N/A 13 NOTHING FOR NOW. BUT I THINK THEY SHOULD OPEN MORE SLOT FOR CLASSES 14 A more interactive section for the class like Ron Best did with making online lectures and videos. 15 none 16 I don't think there are any other services needed for online students. 17 I do not have any suggestions at this time. 18 some sort of online tutoring 19 more access (grades) from smart phone 20 It is fine how it is. 21 N/a 22 Facetime features 23 Face time with professor with available. 24 free access to book's website 25 More student activity 26 Once in a while gathering 27 Different ways to submit assignments if courseden fails Question: What did you like about the online portion of this course? Response Rate: 54.72% (29 of 53) 1 As I stated when this question was previously asked, I liked how, with online courses, I don't have to worry about trying to fit my classes around my work schedule. This has helped greatly, as I would have been unable to take these classes while working full time this summer. 2 time management

3 always the time flexibility for learning. 4 I'm an over-achiever so I could go faster than the actual class schedule and finish the class two weeks before the end of the session. 5 Everthing. 6 I liked the fact that the information was presented in an understandable way and the professor was always willing to help. 7 see answer 17 8 Already answered 9 n/a 10 Flexibility... (see quest. 17) 11 Freedom to work more 12 IT WAS FANTASTIC AND EDUCATIVE. 13 the flexibility 14 It was easier and I liked working on my own time. 15 I liked the ease of accessibility and being able to do the assignments when it was convenient for me. 16 It was very convenient. 17 easy work load 18 Easy to get online and do work at my own pace. It was great to not have to drive all the way to campus. 19 I could work ahead and at my own paste, as long as I had my work turned in by the due date. 20 I could do it on my own time. 21 Timelines and due dates. 22 I liked being able to acces this course at anytime. 23 Being able to complete assignments at my leisure 24 The cost was greater to take this brief, online session than in person. 25 it was online 26 Everything 27 Freedom to "go to class" whenever. 28 Everything 29 The way everything was detailed Question: Is there anything else about your online experience at UWG that you would like us to know? Response Rate: 50.94% (27 of 53) 1 No, there is not. 2 no 3 I will graduate with my Masters by taking all on-line courses. I currently have little desire to participate in graduation due to the lack of face to face interaction with fellow students and professors. 4 Nothing 5 NO...I enjoy UWG...GO WEST! 6 No 7 n/a 8 No 9 n/a 10 I was very taken aback at the fee to pay my tuition and fees online. You're already charging a fee for me to take an online class -- why charge another fee to pay online? Other than that, all was fine with me.

11 n/a 12 NOTHING AT THIS POINT. 13 No 14 No 15 I enjoyed my online experience at UWG. 16 I do not have any suggestions at this time. 17 I enjoyed the online class 18 Great experience I appreciate some online courses it is an advantage to have some courses online. I came to UWG because of the ability to go to campus and also have an online class environment. I wanted both because online classes are easy but yet when applying for jobs I didn't want the stigma of just attending school online like some universities have. Even though online classes are amazing at times I believe it takes away from hard work and dedication it takes to take test on the spot in a classroom in environment with no help from textbooks or other resources. I think it's great that UWG has both online and on campus classes because of the benefits of both. 19 N/a 20 Everything is pretty good. 21 Online classes are great to take at West Georgia. 22 it was online 23 I do not prefer the updated course den to the previous one. 24 No 25 I love UWG 26 No 27 Non!
