BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES The Significant Attorneys oral history project was initiated by the Indiana State Bar Association in 2009 as part of its oral history program to document the contributions of attorneys who have made an impact upon the law. The Significant Attorneys Project collected oral history interviews for ten attorneys who were felt to have made such an impact. The ten interviewed attorneys include: Sarah Evans Barker (b. 1943) Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of Indiana and past president of the Federal Judges Association. Judge Barker was born in Mishawaka and received her law degree from American University, Washington D. C. Theodore R. Boehm (b. 1938) Justice, Indiana Supreme Court from1996 2010 and was heavily involved in the revitalization of Indianapolis in the 1970s. Justice Boehm was born in Evanston, Illinois but moved with his family to Indianapolis when he was four. He received his law degree from Harvard. Rabb Emison (b. 1925) was an attorney in Vincennes, Knox County, for more than fifty years and a past president of the Indiana State Bar Association. Mr. Emison was born in Vincennes and received his law degree from Indiana University. Russell Hart (b. 1928) is retired Senior Counsel for Stuart & Branigin LLP in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and was involved in many trial lawyer organizations. Mr. Hart was born in Chicago, Illinois, and received his law degree from Indiana University. Andrew Jacobs, Jr. (b. 1932) served in the United States House of Representatives from the 10 th District, Indiana and served on the House Ways and Means Committee and was Chairman of both the Subcommittee on Health (Medicare) and the Subcommittee on Social Security. Mr. Jacobs was born in Indianapolis and received his law degree from Indiana University. James J. Richards (b. 1925) was judge of the Superior Court of Lake County from 1962 2002. Judge Richards was born in Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana and received his law degree from Northwestern University. John Trent Sharpnack (b. 1933) has been judge of the Indiana Court of Appeals since 1991 and is now Senior Judge of the same court. Judge Sharpnack was born in Columbus, Bartholomew County, and received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati. Thomas H. Singer (b. 1934) is a litigation lawyer and is currently of counsel to Nickle and Piasecki in South Bend, St. Joseph County. He is active in trial lawyers organizations and was on the law faculty at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Singer was born in Rochester, New York, and received his law degree from the University of Michigan.
Hugo C. Songer (b. 1931) is a retired judge from the Dubois Circuit Court and served twenty years on the State Board of Law Examiners. Judge Songer was born in Duff, Dubois County, and received his law degree from Indiana University. Viola J. Taliaferro (b. 1928) was judge of the Monroe Circuit Court VII from 1995 2004. Prior to becoming and attorney, Ms. Taliaferro spent many years as a school teacher and administrator. Judge Taliaferro was born in Evington, Campbell County, Virginia, and received her law degree from Indiana University. Lee Hamilton (b. 1931) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1965 1999 serving on the following committees: chairman, Select Committee on Intelligence (Ninety-ninth Congress), Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran (One Hundredth Congress), Joint Economic Committee (One Hundred First Congress); Committee on Foreign Affairs (One Hundred Third Congress.) Mr. Hamilton was born in Florida but was raised in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. He received his law degree from Indiana University. Sources: Information in collection.
