CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE TO OBTAIN THE ISO 50001 WHAT IS THE ISO 50001? The goal of the standard is to create an energy management system within an organization that leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful environmental impacts, while controlling energy costs. Another important requirement of the standard is that there is a continuous improvement process, meaning that after the set goals have been met, the organization should begin planning for further improvement. The ISO50001 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to: Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy Use data to better understand and make decisions on energy usage Measure the results Review how well the policy works Continually improve the energy management strategy WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO OBTAIN THE ISO 500001? I. Energy Policy Reflects the needs of the organization s policy

Favors the continuous improvement of energy performance Includes an overview of the activities which may affect the energy performance Identifies the legal requirements concerning the organism s usage, consumption and efficiency of energy. II. Energy Review Analysis of the energy consumption is based on measurements and other data Evaluation of the past and current energy consumption (12 to 24 months) to establish an energy baseline Creation of a detailed load breakdown in order to identify significant usage of energy in the facility Identification of the variables, such as temperature or production level Estimation of future energy consumption Identification, ranking and recording of the performances improvement opportunities Identification of one or several energy profiles: base consumption according to different situation (season, workload ) III. Energy Planning All persons working on this project are trained and educated properly Designation of responsibility Collaboration with facility personnel to establish appropriate EnPIs (Energy Performances Indicators) Definition of the means and time frame by which individual targets are to be achieved A statement of the method by which an improvement in energy shall be verified A statement of method of verifying the results IV. Verification Surveillance, measurements, analysis of key characteristics defined during the energy planning Implementation of an energy measurement plan Every significant disparity in energy consumption must be analyzed and corrected Perform energy audit to verify the efficiency of the system Creation and update of clear, identifiable and traceable records

The ISO 50001 is a standard based on continuous improvement and as every other ISO standard, the certification has to be renewed in order to make sure that the system does not just remain compliant, but that it continually improves.
