Old Courses: For many years, students who arrived at WWCC unprepared for college level mathematics but wanting to receive an AA were asked to start in one of four traditional college prep classes: Math 49 - a basic course designed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra Math 50 - Pre-Algebra Math 65 - Elementary Algebra Math 95 - Intermediate Algebra After a student successfully completed Math 95, it was assumed that he/she had fulfilled his/her Intermediate Algebra proficiency as required by the ICRC guidelines and was simultaneously prepared to enroll in one of Math 107, Math 115, Math 141, Math 148, Math 201, or Math 205. After Spring of 2013, the old pre-college courses (49, 50, 65, 95) will be archived and any student who is not yet prepared for college level mathematics will need to enroll in the new mathematics sequence. TRANSFERRING FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE: When a student transfers from another college: If the student does not have any math on his/her transcript, but has an up to date COMPASS test, the student can be placed with the COMPASS test from the other school (see page 3) or may retake the new COMPASS test at WWCC. If the student does not have any math on his/her transcript and does not have an up to date COMPASS test, the student should take the new COMPASS test at WWCC. It the student does have math on his/her transcript from another school, the student must have the transcript evaluated (Registrar s Office) to determine credit transfer and placement. RECENT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES: If a student has a high school transcript that is less than three years old and has NOT taken math at WWCC or at any other college, the student should take the new COMPASS at WWCC. If, however, the student believes that the placement is not correct, the student may bring his/her most recent high school transcript to either Laura Schueller or a full time math faculty member to discuss an override. 2013-2014 Pre-College Math Advisor Packet Page 6
Registration: E- Schedule: A student who is ready and wants to take either Math 40 (5 credits) or Math 80F (2.5 credits) should look for those classes in the E- schedule like any other course. Common Exams: At the ½-way point and at the end of each quarter, students enrolled in Math 70A, Math 72B, Math 74C, Math 76D, Math 78E, Math 80F will take a common final exam written by a committee of math department faculty. Students MUST pass this exam to get a C- or better in the course. As with any exams, students qualifying for accommodations will receive them. Successful, Partially Successful, Unsuccessful: For students enrolled in two courses, one of four things can happen: The student passes the first course in the first half of the quarter and the second course in the second half of the quarter. In this case the student receives a passing grade for each course (2.5 credits each). The student passes the first course but requires the entire quarter to do so and does not work on material from the second course. In this case the credits for the first course will be changed to 5, the credits for the second course will be changed to zero, a passing grade will be assigned to the first course, and the second course will NOT appear on the student transcript. (Q grade) The student passes the first course in the first half of the quarter and is unsuccessful in the second course. In this case the credits for the first course will be changed to 5, the credits for the second course will be changed to zero, a passing grade will be assigned to the first course, and the second course will NOT appear on the student transcript. (U grade) The student does not pass the first course even after the entire quarter. In this case the credits for the first course will be changed to 5, the credits for the second course will be changed to zero, a D or F grade will be assigned to the first course, and the second course will NOT appear on the student transcript. New Program Requirements: Students planning to get an AA will still need to complete a college level mathematics course. The only change is the path for students who arrive needing preliminary coursework before taking a college level course. Students in applied programs (that traditionally have not required college level mathematics to fulfill their quantitative requirements) may have new requirements for graduation. Frequently Asked Questions: 1) Which of the new courses is the old Math 65? a) There is no exact correspondence. When the math department redesigned the sequence, they started from scratch. For example, there are things in Math 74C from the old Math 50, Math 65, and Math 95. The reality is that we will have students changing from the old to the new, and we didn t want everyone to have to retest and maybe start over so, we created the crosswalk (page 5) to let students know where to go, and we worked with faculty across campus to determine which math classes students would need for other courses (page 9) and other programs (page 10). 2) How do I advise my student? a) After looking at the student placement, if the student places into any of Math 70A, 72B, 74C, 76D, or 78E, the student will enroll in their placement course and will be automatically enrolled in the next course as well. The two courses together make up one 5 credit quarter. Although not all students will succeed in passing both, a successful student should be able to cover two of these courses per quarter. 3) Will my student still be able to take Math 95? a) No. All of the old pre-college math classes will be archived at the end of Spring 2013. Only the new courses will be available at that time. 4) Will the new classes all be taught in the same way? a) No. Individual faculty will still have the autonomy to teach using lecture, group work, projects, computer labs, etc. just like before. However, every student will need to take and pass the common exam to move on. 5) Will there still be online sections? a) Yes. 6) Will the courses be the same on all of the campuses? a) The same content from the same text will be used on all campuses. 7) Will the courses use the same textbooks as Math 49, 50, 65, 95? a) No. We will be using a new textbook for the new math courses. If a student is in Math 65 or Math 95 in Spring 2013 and has purchased a MyMathLab code for their Spring 2013 course and enrolls in one of the new pre-college courses in Summer or Fall 2013, the math department will work with the student to transfer their code. 8) Is there someone I can ask for help? a) YES!
