What is a Cloud Server? 2. Compliance & Performance of Cloud Servers 3. Hybrid Servers 4. About Silicon House Rapid Action Force

What is a Cloud Server? Cloud computing refers a cluster or large pool of multiple server-based computational resources which is available for access to the users. In cloud, user can access using various devices such as desktop, phone or other devices and use applications and store data in the remote cloud server. This avoids installing multiple applications in the local device. With such a large pool of computational resource, a cloud can run multiple OS using the same resources. Silicon House Cloud is developed over Citrix Xen Server and is based on a minimum of 2.0 GHz processor. This consists of three components; 1. Xen Hyper visor 2. Domain 0, the privileged domain ( Dom0 ) - Privileged guest running on the hyper visor with direct hardware access and guest management responsibilities 3. Multiple DomainU, Unprivileged Domain Guests ( DomU ) - Unprivileged guests running on the hyper visor; they have no direct access to hardware. The Xen hypervisor runs directly on the hardware and becomes the interface for all hardware requests such as CPU, I/O, and disk for the guest operating systems. The Domain 0 Guest referred to as Dom0 is launched by the Xen hypervisor during initial system start-up and can run any operating system. The Dom0 has unique privileges to access the Xen hypervisor that is not allocated to any other Domain Guests. The Domain Guests referred to as DomUs are launched and controlled by the Dom0 and independently operate on the system. These guests are either run with a special modified operating system referred to as paravirtualizion or un-modified operating systems leveraging special virtualization hardware (Intel VT and AMD-V) referred to as hardware virtual machine (HVM).

Compliance and Performance of Cloud Servers Compliance Many of the enterprise compliance requirements that exists today are under the basic assumption that data is stored in an infrastructure that is owned by the enterprise. But this basic assumption might not be fully applicable in case of Cloud Servers. Unless it is a private cloud built and owned by the enterprise, it is not possible to own 100 % of the infrastructure. In case of a normal cloud server instance which is created over a public cloud computational pool, the enterprise does not own the cloud pool completely. The enterprise has to meet the compliance requirements and has to take onus of it, but it does not own or control the entire cloud pool. Certain PCI compliance requires data to be stored in absolutely independent data storage environment and not in shared environment. Cloud by design itself is a virtualized environment. Performance With all the advantages of vertical and horizontal scalability, cloud also comes with some disadvantage at this point in time. Because of the I/O performance of database intensive websites or applications will be inferior when compared to a dedicated environment. When a cloud pool is oversold, a cloud server instance can simply be problematic than that of a dedicated environment. Hybrid Servers Hybrid servers provide a decent solution for both compliance and performance issues of a Cloud Server Instance. Typically in a hybrid environment, the application layer of the program is placed in multiple cloud server instances. These cloud server instances are behind a load balancer to take care of load spikes. The application layer or the cloud server instances are connected to dedicated database servers thro a Gbps private network. This way vital data is also segregated and isolated, performance lag due to I/O in database operations is also taken care of. Silicon House Cloud Servers can be templated and replicated with ease within few min. To deploy a new cloud instance, it takes less than 60 sec. Once a new cloud instance is deployed all you have to do is to restore your snap shot of the master environment. Such a quick restoration or replication is not possible in a dedicated environment unless you invest heavily. Moreover, multiple cloud instances serve as different servers and if load balanced in the edge can act as cluster by themselves.
