A favorable investment in solar power Turnkey systems and solutions for photovoltaic power plants Answers for energy.
Bright times for solar power Large-scale photovoltaic power plants: a promising future The advantages of solar energy are clear: the sun is an endless source of energy and the conversion process yields clean energy. Another advantage of photovoltaic (PV) power plants is their suitability for different locations. They can be installed almost anywhere. This strong foundation promotes the important position PV power plants are expected to play in the future energy mix, which is also reflected in the past industrial growth rates and the expected future growth. The photovoltaics market, characterized by farabove-average growth, is expected to be worth over $32.3 billion in 2012* and upward growth is expected to continue. The large-scale PV power plant segment is expected to grow by 17 20 percent**. Market drivers in the large-scale PV segment are the great potential for optimization and the double-digit profit rates possible today. The main challenge is to ensure both sustainable and profitable growth of the PV market, which is characterized by a high degree of complexity and a wide variety of technical demands. This calls for thorough experience and expertise. Siemens, the world s only integrated energy infrastructure company covering the entire energy conversion chain, is ideally positioned to provide the future-oriented, innovative, and efficient products, solutions, and services that can help solve these complex issues. Innovation and efficiency are key factor in ensuring the sustainable competitiveness of large-scale PV power plants in direct comparison to conventional energy sources. There is much unexplored potential to be tapped. * BCC Research project, 2008 ** Siemens-internal assessment Sustainable performance The success of a PV power plant depends on several aspects. Siemens can help customers realize enhanced profit ability by optimizing PV plants from the financial, technical and performance perspective. The scope of supply can include development and financing support, EPC and turnkey delivery, and a comprehensive range of maintenance and operational services. Siemens unique performance ratio contracting concept rounds off the attractiveness of the PV plant solutions. In a nutshell, it s: an optimum solution designed to combine low losses, maximum output and an outstanding performance ratio. 2

A selection of successful projects Forchheim, Germany Excellent plant performance After a planning and construction time of less than three months, the project in Forchheim went into service. With the solar modules providing an electrical efficiency of over 18 percent, the customer reports that the unit has been extremely reliable and profitable. Project scope rating of 800 kwp (one-third greater output than many solar plants of comparable size) turnkey scope, consisting of power inverters, switchgear, transformers, and connection to the local power grid 3,600 monocrystalline solar modules with a rating of 225 Wp each generated more than 750 MWh per year commercial operation began in December 2008 Rende, Italy High efficiency with limited space Due to specific space regulations, the challenge for this project in Rende, Italy, was to integrate a 1-MWp photovoltaic system on less than 10,000 m 2 of ground area. A large construction was designed and built right next to an existing biomass installation. The High Vela acts as a large facade and has a highly efficient ratio of panels to space. Furthermore, the installed rows of solar panels are situated closer to one another than in standard plant constructions, decreasing the tilt angle but utilizing space with maximum efficiency. Project scope rating of 1 MWp turnkey scope, consisting of solar panels, power inverters, switchgear, transformers and custom galvanized steel support structures service and maintenance generates up to approximately 1,400 MWh per year, providing up to 350 households with solar power commercial operation began in 2007 Beneixama, Spain Flexible solutions tailored to the environment and market conditions Due to the differentiated feed-in tariff (FIT) structure in Spain, the challenge of the Beneixama project was to help the customer enhance the profitability of the PV plant. Siemens designed and implemented the entire plant subsystems to adjust it to the feed-in tariff structure. As a result, the plant has reported a higher profitability than some other plants in its MW range. Despite adverse conditions, the plant was constructed within 12 months. Project scope rating of 20 MWp (largest solar power plant worldwide at time of completion) EPC contractor for the electrical lot (E-EPC) monitoring system designed to reduce or avoid yield losses generated approximately 30,000 MWh per year reported carbon dioxide reduction of approximately 30,000 tons per year commercial operation began in 2007 5
