LMS Implementation Project Fall DSR Roundtable October 15, 2015
What is the problem we are trying to solve? The current campus wide Learning Management System (CULearn) is limited in its ability to assign and organize Non-credit learning and transcripts. Frequently heard comments: Hard to use, confusing, won t work with my browser, can t see the information I need to manage my courses etc. The result: Limited use of CULearn, and a proliferation of systems running outside of the central service. 2
In mid-2013 a project was approved to find the best replacement for CULearn. Due to the imminent replacement of CULearn, the old system became unsupported. And has remained that way, putting a top-tier campus service at risk. a key deliverable of this implementation project will be the retirement of CULearn next summer. 3
At the end of an exhaustive 18-month discovery project LMS industry leader Saba won the award for CULEARN, the Cornell LMS project The Cornell implementation of the new Saba CULearn will be overseen by Saba s recommended implementation partner, The Educe Group. 4
Some improvements in the new LMS: Better browser compatibility, More intuitive interface (no longer need to take a class to learn how to take a class); More robust and flexible reporting environment Support for inter-departmental billing Support for users holding multiple jobs Supervisor access to a learner s plan (transcript of training history) Offers the ability to assign/track learning for non-cornellians Speeds up the syncing of training records with Workday, results in faster updates for mandatory new employee compliance training. Superior authoring tool compatibility, results in easier logging for completion of courses. Potential integration with external systems like SkillSoft, AALAS and CITI 5
High-Level Project Objectives Replace current CULearn system with a system that s easy to use, while offering a larger set of useful features than we have now. Give faculty, staff and students direct input into system set up and workflow, to help maximize end-user ease-of-use.
High-Level Project Objectives, continued Deliver the launch of the new CULearn within published timeline and budget. Increase Learning Management System use by campus through education and mentoring. Eliminate redundancy of data, manual processes, and administrative workload; i.e. replace shadow systems with a best-of-breed solution.
