Heritage Christian Schools Bible 10, Christian Studies 11 & 12 BAA Courses Synopsis and Rational Bible 10 and Christian Studies 11 &12 are required courses for successful graduation of Heritage Christian School and Heritage Christian Online School. Both HCS and HCOS are committed to Biblical Integration in every topic of study and skill development thus the Scriptures becomes the fountain of truth for all topics and aspects of the Christian Life. In the High School years we seek to bring students into a discipleship relationship with Jesus as their Master. This can only be done as students grow and develop in their understanding of His Word, their participation in ongoing discipleship and seeing the cultural context in which they have been called to live as Christian. The Learning Outcomes cover the span of the three years of study. Each year the student is expected to participate in the aspects of Personal Devotion and Discipleship. Then each year the student will focus on one of the three other aspects of our Learning Outcomes. Students and teachers can work on a blended focus of all three aspects of the Outcomes as long as they have a coordinated approach from Grade 10 to 12. It is suggested that students study Hermeneutics in the Grade 10 year, Bible Doctrines in the Grade 11 year and Christian Studies in the Grade 12 year. The course level will stay with the Grade level of the student because of the Discipleship Aspect of their growth and development. HCS and HCOS recognize the unique nature of Biblical Studies within the diverse Evangelical communities and denominations we serve. Teachers need to be careful not to present a denominational perspective. Both schools hold to the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada s Statement of Faith (see Appendix A). This should be the Creedal Statement that guides our instruction. The school authority is Kelowna Christian Center Society and holds to this Creed with the addition of several statements regarding the Holy Spirit from a Charismatic perspective (see Appendix B). Teachers are not required to teach this perspective but are a required to have an open minded approach toward these additional statements and encourage students to explore these ideas and experience in their discipleship and study. In the event that a student s studies take them outside the prescribed learning outcomes the board authorizes the school administration to award the Bible 10 and Christian Studies Credits after careful review of the student s course of study. They must include the Personal Devotion and Discipleship.

Course Structure Grade 10 4 Credit Course Unit Approach Personal Devotion and Discipleship 4 Credits Hermeneutics (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 75 hours Grade 11 Personal Devotion and Discipleship 4 Credits Bible Doctrines (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 75 hours Grade 12 Personal Devotion and Discipleship 4 Credits Christian Worldview (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 75 hours 4 Credit Course Combined Approach Personal Devotion and Discipleship Hermeneutics 25 hours Bible Doctrines 25 hours Grades 10 Christian Worldview 25 hours 11 & 12 In this approach teachers should note that the students are progressing through the outcomes partially each year. In order to continue to obtain credits for Christian Studies 11 & 12 a comprehensive plan must be in place in order to receive the full credits in the pursuing years. 2 Credit Course Unit Approach Only Grade 10 Personal Devotion and Discipleship 30 hours 4 Credits Hermeneutics (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 25 hours Grade 11 Personal Devotion and Discipleship 30 hours 4 Credits Bible Doctrines (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 25 hours Grade 12 Personal Devotion and Discipleship 30 hours 4 Credits Christian Worldview (or one of the other 2 Organizers) 25 hours Learning Outcomes Personal Devotions and Discipleship It is expected that our student will commit to memory significant portions of scripture to memory. It is expected that our student will participate in an ongoing devotional approach to reading the scriptures. It is expected that our students will participate in a faith community that will have some application of Bible study such as weekly Church Service, Youth Group, Bible Study, Chapel. It is expected that our student will develop and participate in a relationship of discipleship where mentoring through the scriptures are the foundation. This

mentor could be a Pastor, Youth leader, Chaplin, Parent, Teacher or a mature Christian. Hermeneutics (Proper Biblical Interpretation and Study) It is expected that our student will understand, demonstrate and defend the Bible as the inspired Word of God. It is expected that our students will develop an understanding of the principles of Biblical interpretation. It is expected that our student will study and participate in a thorough exegesis of a book in the New Testament. It is expected that our students will begin to understand and analyze the various divisions of Scripture, i.e. Old Testament Law, History, Psalms and Prophets; the New Testament gospels, Acts, Epistles, Revelation. Bible Doctrines of creationism (purposeful, intelligent design by our Creator) and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. of the creation and fall of Man and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. of the Deity of Christ and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. of the Redemptive work of Christ and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. of personal salvation and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. of the Universal and Local Church and the scriptures associated with this doctrine. Christian Worldview It is expected that our students will demonstrate an understanding of the historical context of Christianity in western culture.

It is expected that our students will be able to see and demonstrate the contrast and interaction of Christianity within western modern and post-modern culture. It is expected that our students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic Presuppositions of the Christian Faith such as the authority of knowledge, the dualist belief in reality (spirit realm and natural realm) the existence of God (Christian Monotheism), the nature of man (created in His image). It is expected that our students will demonstrate an understanding of the competing non-christian worldviews including: Secular Humanism (often called scientific naturalism or materialism), Marxism, New Age, other World Religions. Assessment Strategy For Personal Devotions and Discipleship the student will provide specific evidence of their participation in Church or Chapel, a discipleship relationship, regular scripture reading and memorization. For the other three Outcomes students may show evidence of learning through: o Curriculum assignments and worksheets o Personal presentations o Quizzes, Tests and Exams o Discussions and Class Participation o Essays and reports o Activities that include the course outlines such as outreaches, Bible studies, debates, faith sharing opportunities. Recommended Resources Students and Teachers are encouraged to use a variety of Bible Translations for their course of study. HCS and HCOS do not hold to any one version as the best translation. We hold to the belief that the Scriptures as it was written by the original authors is the inspired version. Thus we must look to multiple translations to get a true sense of the original passage. It is suggested that the following translations be used for the specific activities: o For Bible Memorization a common literal translation is recommended such as the King James, the New King James, The New International, The New American Standard. o For Bible Reading a modern speech or paraphrase translation can make devotional Bible reading come alive. We recommend the Living Bible and the New Living Bible, The Message Translation, Good News for Modern

Man. o For Doctrinal Studies we recommend both literal translations (see above list) and expanded versions such as the Amplified Bible, Rotherham s Emphasized Bible, Wuest s N.T. We also recommend such study Bibles as The Open Bible, The Scofield Reference, The Thompson Chain Reference, the Zondervan NIV Study Bible, Life Application Study Bible, the New Spirit-Filled Life Bible. For Computer Bible Programs and comprehensive study materials and commentaries we recommend these free resources: the Online Bible (www.onlinebible.org), e-sword (www.e-sword.net). For Internet Bible Sites with study materials, devotionals, dictionaries and commentaries we recommend www.biblegateway.com and www.bible.org. For Hermeneutics we recommend Mastering Bible Study Skills Publisher, ACSI- Purposeful Design, both teacher and student resources available. For Doctrinal Studies we recommend Let God Be God and Timeless Truth Publisher, ACSI-Purposeful Design, both teacher and student resources available. For Worldview Studies we recommend Understanding the Times Publisher, Summit Ministries, both teacher and student resources available. Appendix A The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada believes: The Holy Scriptures as originally given by God are divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our Lord Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh; we affirm his virgin birth, sinless humanity, divine miracles, vicarious and atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension, ongoing mediatorial work, and personal return in power and glory. The salvation of lost and sinful humanity is possible only through the merits of the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, received by faith apart from works, and is characterized by regeneration by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables believers to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Church, the body of Christ, consists of all true believers. Ultimately God will judge the living and the dead, those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. Appendix B Kelowna Christian Center Statement of Faith

1. We believe in the Bible to be the only infallible authoritative Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit; 2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost; 3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His Bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in the blessed hope of His personal, visible and imminent return to this earth to receive to Himself His blood-bought Church, that it may be with Him forever; 4. We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sins is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ; 5. We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human sprit and soul and body in answer to believing prayer; 6. We believe in the empowering of the believer by baptism with the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4, for the believer who asks for it, with the initial sign of speaking in tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance. 7. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the one to Everlasting life and the other to everlasting damnation; 8. We believe in the present day ministry of the Holy Spirit; in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within each believer from the moment of spiritual rebirth; in the nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit as available to all Spirit-filled believers; 9. We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in Christ 10. We believe that the recreation by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation; 11. We believe in intensive world Evangelism and missionary work in accordance with the great commission with signs following (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-18).
