NPTS Program Summer 2014 Professional Development Experience Final Report The Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies Students are doing exciting things this summer, whether here in Monterey or around the world in countries including Nepal, the Netherlands and Russia. This report should provide an understanding of the range and depths of experiences our students pursue during their graduate careers. The chart below indicates the number of students pursuing each type of opportunity this summer. Of the 45 students who are completing relevant jobs or internships this summer, 30 are doing paid or stipended work (67%), 12 are doing unpaid work (27%), and for 5 students, salary is unknown (11%). 65% of the opportunities NPTS students are pursuing this summer were MIIS facilitated. 35% were student facilitated. As of December 11, 2014 1

Among students who reported receiving a stipend for their internships, the amount ranged from $1,000-$2,000 per month. Students receiving an hourly wage reported an average of $19.67/hour. Some students doing consulting work indicated that they are paid per report, generally $60/report. Finally, US federal interns who reported salary indicated an average salary range of $3,210.25/month. *The "Not Seeking" category includes traveling, caring for family, applying for post graduate positions and PhD programs, etc. Relevant Jobs, Internships, Conferences and Academic and Language Programs Thick borders group together all activities undertaken by the same student. Many students are pursuing more than one opportunity this summer. In fact, 43 students are pursuing 54 different jobs and internships! Records in italics connote that the student is on an academically relevant leave of absence to pursue a professional development opportunity.
