California law requires that every student attend school until the age of 18 years or until the completion of high school. The primary responsibility of the student is to be in class to maximize his/her opportunities for success. Excessive tardiness and absences have a direct correlation to poor student performance and are detrimental to the learning environment. FTHS attendance policy is directed towards promoting a positive learning environment. The attendance office will be open before and after school, during breaks and lunch. Attendance may be checked on Q-Parent or Q- Student Connect, our student information system. WHEN ABSENT / Re-admittance procedures: It is the parent s/guardian s or student s (if the student is 18) responsibility to notify the school by phone, written note, or e-mail. STUDENTS WILL HAVE 3 DAYS TO CLEAR AN ABSENCE. If an absence is not cleared within 3 days it will remain unexcused. LEAVING CAMPUS Students may not leave campus without a written note or verbal permission from parent or guardian. Students must sign in and out when leaving at any other than the scheduled time, even with a parent note or call. 6

Only a parent or guardian may authorize the student to leave campus. Any student who violates this may be assigned appropriate disciplinary action in addition to having off campus privileges revoked or put on hold. DEFINITION OF ABSENCE not present or arriving more than 30 mins late. TYPES OF ABSENCE: Excused absence: illness, medical / dental appointment, death in immediate family, quarantine/immunization exclusion, jury duty (18 years or older) Excused absence recorded based on activity: appearance in court, observance of a religious holiday, pressing family emergency Unexcused absence: vacation, employment, errands, visiting relative or friends, transportation issues, shopping; illness of family member Truancy: ditching Suspension: suspensions are indicated in Q-Connect TARDY / ABSENCE POLICY: Tardies/absences are calculated based on class periods. Tardies / absences are cumulative throughout the entire year. They DO NOT start over at the semester. Consequences for tardies or unexcused absences are as follows: 1. 2 tardies or unexcused absences; noted in Q-Connect 2. 5 tardies or unexcused absences, the student is assigned a detention 3. 7 tardies or unexcused absences, an attendance contract is created 4. 8 tardies, a referral is issued for suspension and parent contact is made 5. Continued defiance may result in additional suspension, removal from class or alternative placement. The FTHS administration may do periodic sweeps of the campus for students who are tardy. Tardy students may receive detention. 7

DISCIPLINE CODE To ensure a positive and safe learning environment, the Board of Education has developed a comprehensive discipline code. The discipline code is in effect to and from school, during the school day and during any school activity. (See VUSD Board policies for more information) STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Every pupil shall attend school punctually and regularly; conform to the regulations of the school; be respectful to his/her teachers and others in authority; be kind and courteous to schoolmates; and refrain from the use of profane and vulgar language. FOOTHILL DISCIPLINE POLICY We expect all students to follow the rules at all times. Classroom disruptions will not be allowed. A number of strategies will be used as consequences: * teacher counseling * revoking privileges * removal from school-sponsored events * FIRE assignment * detention * parent phone call * Saturday School * student behavior contract * suspension 8

FTHS PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE PLAN* 1. Warning by the teacher 2. Phone call to parent 3. Meeting with student and parent to discuss behavior 4. Referral to AP who will assign consequences 5. Three (3) or more suspensions for the same or similar events could lead to alternate placement * Every effort will be made to follow this plan. However, all consequences are subject to administrative decision in special circumstances. Expulsion Recommendations A. Causing serious physical injury to another person, except in self-defense B. Possession of any knife, or other dangerous object of no reasonable use to pupil C. Unlawful possession of any controlled substance (except for the first offense of not more than one ounce of marijuana) D. Robbery or extortion E. Assault or battery upon any school employee F. Possessing, selling or otherwise furnishing a firearm G. Brandishing a knife at another person H. Unlawfully selling a controlled substance I. Committing or attempting to commit a sexual assault J. Possession of an explosive K. Other Suspensions A student may be suspended, involuntarily placed in a continuation school, or recommended for expulsion for the following (Education Code 48900): a. Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person; willfully used force or violence upon the person of another, except in self-defense b. Possessed, sold, or furnished any firearm, imitation firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object c. Possessed, used, sold, furnished, or under the influence of any controlled substance, alcoholic beverage or intoxicant of any kind 9

d. Offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance, alcohol, intoxicant or representation thereof e. Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion. f. Caused or attempted to cause damage to school or private property g. Possessed or used tobacco, or tobacco products h. Stole or attempted to steal school or private property i. Committed an obscene act or engaged in habitual profanity or vulgarity j. Offered, possessed, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia k. Disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied valid authority l. Knowingly received stolen school property or private property m. Possessed an imitation firearm n. Committed or attempted to commit a sexual assault, or committed a sexual battery, as defined in the Penal Code o. Harassed, threatened, or intimidated a pupil who is a complaining witness or witness in a school disciplinary proceeding p. Unlawfully offered, arranged to sell, negotiated to sell, or sold the prescription drug Soma q. Engaged in, or attempted to engage in, hazing as defined in Section 245.6 of the Penal Code r. Engaged in an act of bullying, including, but not limited to, bullying committed by means of an electronic act directed toward a pupil/school personnel s. Aided or abetted the infliction or attempted infliction of physical injury t. Pupil s presence causes a danger to persons or property, or threatens to disrupt the instructional process (E.C. 48900.5) u. Pupil has made terrorist threats against school officials or school property, or both (E.C. 48900.7) v. Committed sexual harassment (E.C. 48900.2) w. Caused, attempted to cause, threatened to cause, or participated in an act of hate violence (E.C. 48900.3) x. Engaged in harassment, threats or intimidation against school district personnel or pupils (E.C. 48900.4) 10

VUSD & FTHS POLICIES NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY The mission of Foothill Technology High School is to prepare all students for full participation in and contribution to the larger society by delivery of high quality programs and instruction to all students in a caring atmosphere. We affirm the dignity and value of the individual and declare zero tolerance for discriminatory remarks, symbols, gestures, or behavior. Diversity Students: The Ventura Unified School District does not discriminate on the basis of sex, age, race, color, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual orientation in the education programs or activities which it operates. The Ventura Unified School District is committed to diversity in its programs because the district believes that diversity is educationally beneficial for all students. Special Needs Students: The Ventura Unified School District affords equal educational opportunity to all qualified students. If you think you have a disability that may affect your ability to fully participate in the Foothill Technology High School program, you are encouraged to provide information about that disability to the review committee so an accommodation plan may be arranged if one is warranted. Any student or staff member who believes that anyone has subjected him or her to an act of discrimination should immediately report any such incident to a school counselor or Assistant Principal. The school s administration will investigate all such allegations and will, if necessary, issue appropriate punishment. 11

NONDISCRIMINATION/HARASSMENT District programs and activities shall be free from discrimination, including harassment, with respect to ethnic group, religion, gender, sexual orientation, actual or perceived sexual orientation, color, race, national origin and physical or mental disability. The district shall ensure equal opportunities for all students in admission and access to the educational program, guidance and counseling programs, athletic programs, testing procedures, and other activities. If you feel you are being harassed, immediately contact the Assistant Principal or the Principal at your school. (Board Policy 5145.3) SEXUAL HARASSMENT includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome sexual advances, unwanted requests for sexual favors or other unwanted verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature made against another person of the same or opposite gender, in the educational setting, when: (Education Code 231.5; 5 CCR 4916) 1. Submission to the conduct is explicitly or implicitly made as term or condition of a student s academic status or progress 2. Submission to or rejection of the conduct by a student is used as the basis for academic decisions affecting the student 3. The conduct has the purpose or effect of having a negative impact on the student s academic performance, or of creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment 4. Submission to or rejection of the conduct by the student is used as the basis for any decision affecting the student regarding benefits and services, honors, programs, or activities available at or through any district program or activity. Types of conduct which are prohibited in the district and which may constitute sexual harassment include, but are not limited to: 1. Unwelcome leering, sexual flirtations or propositions 2. Sexual slurs, epithets, threats, verbal abuse, derogatory comments or sexually degrading descriptions 12

3. Graphic verbal comments about an individual s body, or overly personal conversation 4. Sexual jokes, notes, stories, drawings, pictures or gestures 5. Spreading sexual rumors 6. Teasing or sexual remarks about students enrolled in a predominantly single-gender class 7. Massaging, grabbing, fondling, stroking or brushing the body 8. Touching an individual s body or clothes in a sexual way 9. Purposefully cornering or blocking normal movements 10. Displaying sexually suggestive objects. Bullying (including Cyberbullying): Bullying is defined as any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or by means of an electronic act, as defined, including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, hate violence, or harassment, threats, or intimidation - while on school grounds, at a school sponsored-activity, while traveling to and from school, on a school bus, during any activity related to school attendance - that typically has the effect or can reasonably be predicted to have the effect of placing a reasonable pupil, as defined, in fear or harm to that pupil's or those pupil's person or property, causing a reasonable pupil to experience a substantially detrimental effect on his or her physical or mental health, causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with his or her academic performance, or causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with his or her ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school. The electronic act is defined as the transmission of a communication, including, but not limited to, a message, text, sound, or image, or a post on a social network Internet Web site, by means of an electronic device, including, but not necessarily limited to, a telephone, wireless telephone or other wireless communication device, computer, or pager. (VUSD Board Policy 5131.2) Please report any bullying to a teacher or administrator immediately. Acts of bullying will be responded to promptly and any students found to be participating in bullying will be subject to disciplinary action including counseling, detention, suspension or expulsion. 13

Families and students will be notified of Ventura Unified s policy through the Annual Notice, the Comprehensive School Safety Plan, and during student orientation. Complaint Process - If you feel you are a victim of harassment at school or a school-related activity, immediately report the harassment to the Assistant Principal or the Principal at your school. Harassment complaints may also be made to Ventura Unified by telephoning 641-5000. If you report harassment, you will be protected from retaliation. Investigation of complaints at school shall be promptly investigated by the principal or designee. Enforcement of the policy may include the following actions: 1. Removing vulgar or offending graffiti 2. Providing staff in-service and student instruction or counseling 3. Notifying parents/guardians of the actions taken 4. Notifying child protective services 5. Taking appropriate disciplinary action. In addition, the principal or designee may take disciplinary measures against any person who is found to have made a complaint of sexual harassment that he/she knew was not true. Disciplinary Measures - A student who engages in sexual harassment of anyone at school or at a school related activity is in violation of this policy and shall be subject to disciplinary action. For students in grades 4-12, disciplinary action my include suspension and/or expulsion, provided that in imposing such discipline the entire circumstances of the incident(s) shall be taken into account. (Board Policy 5145.7 & E.C. 48980) 14

When cheating occurs, all students suffer, especially in classes where grades are based on a curve. Therefore, students who cheat, lie, plagiarize, or act dishonestly in regard to their academic endeavors will be dealt with promptly and effectively to eliminate cheating. The entire Academic Honesty Policy and Regulations relating to that policy are available in the district Board Policies Book at BP 5131.9 and AR 5131.9(a) through 5131.9(g). At the high school level, cheating will result in lowered grades, the possibility of being dropped from advanced classes, suspensions, the possibility of earning a double zero on the assignment and ultimately the possibility of being transferred to an alternative education school. A high school student accused of cheating may appeal any sanction which results from the cheating accusation, but must do so promptly. Any student or parent/guardian interested in appealing a cheating sanction should immediately obtain a copy of the entire Academic Honesty Policy and Regulations found in the district Board Policies Book at BP 5131.9 and AR 5131.9(a) through 5131.9(g). This documentation may be obtained either through the high school principal or the school district s main office. Appendix A E(2) 5131.9 VENTURA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CONSEQUENCES FOR ACADEMIC DISHONESTY** Level 1: Warning with a phone call home and a grade deduction Level 2: Grade deduction with a referral to the AP for a mandatory 2-day suspension Level 3: Grade deduction with a referral to the AP for a mandatory 5-day suspension Level 4: Removal from school **The first infraction results in a permanent level 1 status which remains in effect for the remainder of the student s high school education. Levels 2-4 stay in effect for one calendar year. 15

STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM See your teacher, administrator, school counselor, school nurse, or school psychologist for more information about the groups offered at Foothill. Students need not face the challenges of adolescence alone. COMPLAINT PROCESS Complaints about Programs, Employees, or Procedures: The Ventura Unified School District has a uniform complaint process which is followed when parents/guardians, students or staff have complaints against an employee, the district, programs, materials, facilities, special education programs, or any program or policy. A copy of the complaint policy is available at each school site, as well as the Superintendent s office. FTHS urges all students and parents to contact the person directly involved in the situation first. If the situation is still a concern, please contact your student s Assistant Principal. ALCOHOL, TOBACCO and OTHER DRUGS Alcohol, tobacco and other drug use or possession is prohibited by California State law and Ventura Unified School District Board Policy. School Board Policies 3513.3, 5131.6 and 5131.62 prohibit possession, use, or the selling of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by students, staff, or visitors on or around school campus, at school-sponsored events, or while under the supervision of district employees. School Board Policy 5131.63 further prohibits the use of anabolic steroids or any other performance-enhancing substance. Student Consequences: One or more of the following actions will be taken depending on the student s age, severity and frequency of an incident/offense: Conference with student/administrator/parent or guardian Referral to available and applicable school intervention educational support program Referral to available and applicable community intervention resources Citation by School Resource Officer Alternate Placement Suspension (formal or informal) 16

PROGRAM/COURSE CHANGE POLICY Student-initiated requests for schedule changes are considered only during the first 15 days of the semester, are subject to space availability, and are granted for the following specific reasons: Fulfill graduation requirement Ability level misplacement Completion in summer school Minimum competency preparation Note: Change requests to another teacher for the same level subject are not granted. Changes will be considered as follows: 1. THROUGH END OF 6 th WEEK: a student may drop a class without penalty of an F with teacher and parent approval. 2. THROUGH END OF 10 th WEEK: level changes in a subject area can be made with teacher recommendation, and parent and counselor approval. All changes will be subject to class leveling and availability. 3. BETWEEN THE 7 th AND 12 th WEEK: a student will be allowed to drop a class and a W (Withdrawal) will be posted on their transcript for the class being dropped. 4. THROUGH END OF 12 th WEEK: a student earning a passing grade may drop a class without penalty ONLY with teacher, parent, and counselor input AND administrative approval. Any class dropped after the 12 th week will be reported on the transcript as an F. The administration may, due to increased/decreased enrollment and staff changes, balance course sections by transferring students from one class and/or teacher to another. Every effort will be made to ensure a smooth transition. OFF-CAMPUS LUNCH PRIVILEGE: Off-campus passes for lunch are a junior/senior privilege for Renaissance students only. MUST show I.D. card with the proper sticker before leaving campus. 3. May not loiter or be in residential area or alleys. 4. Closed campus may be enforced on extended lunch or school activity days. Off-campus privileges will be revoked for failure to maintain these policies or due to excessive tardies following lunch. Off-campus privileges will be reassessed at the semester and may be revoked for disciplinary reasons and / or financial obligations as needed. FOOTHILL I.D. CARDS Each student must have an I.D. card in his/her possession while on campus and while attending school functions. I.D. cards are provided free of charge and are issued in the Fall. It is each student s responsibility to make sure to have the I.D. picture taken. An I.D. card is for the purpose of identification and is required to check out books or use computers in the Media Center, to attend school functions and to leave campus for any reason. On occasion, students may be asked to show their I.D. card to a staff member. Failure of a student to identify himself/herself properly is a violation of school policy and will result in appropriate disciplinary action being taken. Any new student to Foothill Technology High School should go to the Administration Building to obtain an I.D. card. Duplicate cards will be issued at a cost of $5.00 in the student store. It takes 3 to 5 days to process individual ID cards. MESSAGES Only emergency messages will be allowed to interrupt classroom activities. 18

PERSONAL BELONGINGS IN THE OFFICE The office does not hold valuables (i.e. laptops, cameras, phones). Classroom instruction will not be interrupted to deliver or notify students of items left or dropped off in the front office. Lunches and clothing may be left in the front office by parents, but it is the responsibility of the student to pick up the item at break or lunch. There will not be a call slip sent to the student because it s an interruption of class. The office will not accept forgotten or late assignments from students. Arrangements must be made with the teacher to drop off any assignments. SEARCH (Board Policy 5145.12) All students have the right to a school environment which is safe and secure. To assure that our campus provides a safe educational setting, student privacy interests must be balanced with the school interests. Therefore, when there is reasonable suspicion that a student has violated or is violating either the law or a school rule, the principal or designees may search an individual, his or her personal property (including cell phones and backpacks), locker and vehicle. In an effort to keep the schools free of drugs, the district may use specially trained, nonaggressive dogs to sniff out and alert staff to the presence of substances prohibited by law or Board policy. The dogs may sniff the air around lockers, desks, or vehicles on district property or at district-sponsored events as long as they are not allowed to sniff within the close proximity of any students. SMOKING The State of California has a NO SMOKING policy on public school campuses. 19

ELECTRONICS/CELL PHONES (California Education Code 48901.5). Students may bring personal electronic devices to Foothill: All devices should be turned off in class unless the instructor directs otherwise. Students who disregard an instructor s directions regarding the use of personal electronic devices in class may have them confiscated. If items are confiscated by staff and given to the office, a parent may be required to retrieve them. The VUSD Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) applies to personal devices when utilizing the FTHS wireless network (Wi-Fi). Students received the AUP policy as part of their new enrollment packets. STUDENTS: DO NOT LEAVE CELL PHONES UNATTENDED! IPODS,AND MP3 PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYERS Personal music devices must be turned off during class in order. Violation of this policy may result in the confiscation of the music device. ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING TESTING Electronic devices including but not limited to music players, cameras, cell phones and calculators are prohibited during testing times: All electronic devices must be in the off position not silent Electronic devices may not be on your person or near your desk during testing All electronics must be placed at the front of the room with your belongings or turned over to your testing proctor for safe keeping All above policies must be followed from the beginning of the testing period until the end of the period unless your proctor collects all tests and gives the class permission otherwise Violating any of these policies may risk invalidating your individual or school test scores Violating any of these policies will result in disciplinary consequences possibly including suspension 20

SKATEBOARDS Students may not use skateboards on campus. Skateboards may not be carried to classrooms during the day. They must be locked in special racks and stored during the school day. Students are responsible and required to provide their own padlock for storage at school. Violation of this policy may result in the confiscation of the skateboard. GANG AFFILIATIONS Any student making racial slurs, displaying graffiti or symbols, or claiming gang affiliation by making gestures that symbolize gang membership, participating in verbal/physical confrontation while claiming affiliation or wearing or displaying gang paraphernalia shall be referred to the principal or designee for appropriate disciplinary action. Students will receive an automatic 5 day suspension and may be alternately placed or expelled. BOOKS Students are issued all required textbooks. Students are expected to return the same book at the end of the course in good condition. Should a textbook be lost, stolen/misplaced, or damaged beyond normal use, it is the responsibility of the student to pay for it so that another textbook may be purchased. If textbooks are found and returned to the library, the cost of replacement is refunded. Library books are subject to the same expectations. OBLIGATIONS Students with any obligations may not be permitted to participate in dances, off campus activities, on-campus parking, receipt of a yearbook, senior activities and/or graduation ceremonies. 21

DRESS CODE The following guidelines (per Board of Education Policy) shall apply to all regular school activities, including dances. If a student is out of dress code, they may be required to sit in the office until proper attire is provided by the parent or guardian. 1. Shoes must be worn at all times. 2. Clothing and jewelry shall be free of writing, pictures or any other insignia which are crude, vulgar, threatening, violent, profane or sexually suggestive or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice or the use of drugs or alcohol. 3. Hats, caps and other head coverings, including scarves and headbands, shall not be worn in the classroom. 4. Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times. Seethrough or fish-net fabrics, halter tops, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops, bare midriffs and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh are prohibited. 5. Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Hair may not be sprayed by any coloring that would drip when wet. 6. All chains shall be less than 12 inches in length. STUDENT PARKING 1. All students are to park in designated student parking. Students and parents are reminded that the school and district assume no responsibility for liability due to damage or theft. 2. Students must obey all speed limits and drive cautiously. 3. A student must apply for, purchase, and display a FTHS parking sticker on their vehicle. 4. Failure to follow the above will result in revoking parking privileges and/or a ticket from the city of Ventura. 5. Only Renaissance students may apply for parking. All parking at FTHS is reserved. When a student qualifies and purchases a permit, that permit/space is reserved for that student. 6. Parking passes may be shared with one other individual who qualifies. 7. An additional parking sticker may be purchased for $5 for the same spot. 22

To be eligible for participation in co-curricular activities and athletics, a student must be enrolled in at least 20 units (4 classes) and maintain a minimum term GPA of 2.0 during the grading period immediately preceding the activity. The 2.0 grade point average must be maintained for each quarter and semester grading period. All graded classes shall count into the determination of the student s grade point average. In determining a grade point average, incomplete grades will be averaged as F s. However, as the incomplete grade is changed to an academic grade, eligibility will again be determined. The first time a student earns less than a 2.0 term GPA at the quarter or semester, the student is placed on probation for the remainder of their high school career. If at any subsequent quarter or semester their GPA should again fall below 2.0, the student is automatically Academically Ineligible. Once a student has been placed on academic probation, their term GPA must be brought up to and remain above a 2.0 term GPA in order to remain eligible. After the initial probation term, if a student s term GPA drops below a 2.0, that student is immediately ineligible for participation in co-curricular activities, including sports. Any student with a 6- or 7-period schedule who earns 3 or more F s at the quarter or semester, or any student on a 5-period schedule who earns 2 or more F s at the quarter or semester, becomes immediately Academically Ineligible. Students must be in attendance at school on the days of the co-curricular or athletic event. Students must be enrolled in at least a minimum day schedule of four classes to be eligible for participation in co-curricular activities or interscholastic athletic competition. The intent of this policy is to reinforce the idea that activities are to complement the academics and never to supplant them. At the discretion of the coach/director, ineligible students may rehearse or practice with the co-curricular group or athletic team during the regular school day (8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.), but may not participate in the performance or contest. The duration of ineligibility will be through the entire grading period. Per CIF regulations, any ineligible student participating in an athletic event risks forcing the team to forfeit any games in which the ineligible student participates. 23

Students affected by this policy include: Athletes Pep Squads Student Government Class Officers Club Officers Bio-Science Cohort members Drama and Choral Productions Competitive Speech Activities Out-of-class Newspaper and Yearbook Productions All students, regardless of their participation in special instructional programs, shall be held responsible for this eligibility policy. RENAISSANCE PROGRAM Renaissance is an academic awards program to honor students who are performing extraordinarily and those who are working to improve their academic performance. Requirements to be a RENAISSANCE student: 1. You have a term GPA above 3.0 OR 2. You have improved your overall GPA from last semester to the end of the most recent semester by.5 (ex. Semester GPA last spring 2.0 semester GPA for this fall 2.5) Levels of Achievement Platinum 4.0 Gold 3.99-3.5 Silver 3.49-3.0 Red.5 Improvement RENAISSANCE students receive: Off campus privileges if a Junior or Senior The opportunity to buy parking passes FTHS Renaissance T Shirt or other incentive Free or discounted admission to Renaissance events (Dances, carnivals, ice cream parties, etc.) FTHS student incentive cards that include: homework passes, tardy passes, test passes, front of the line passes, extra credit, etc. Platinum and Gold level receive Block Letter F for letterman jacket upon request And much, much more!!! FIRE: Foothill Intervention, Reinforcement & Enrichment FIRE is a 30-minute, mid-day advisory period scheduled weekly Tuesday through Friday. All 9th grade students are enrolled in FIRE. New 10th, 11th and 12th grade students may opt in. FIRE provides a structured environment for students to connect with teachers and FIRE mentors and to receive support as they take part in Foothill s rigorously academic high school environment. GPAs affecting qualification for Renaissance and FIRE are based on grades from FTHS only and do not include off-campus classes including VHS and BHS athletics or music. Freshmen, new FTHS students and 10th, 11th or 12th grade students whose grades drop below a 2.0 (1.99 or lower) during any semester or quarter reporting period will remain in or be required to enroll in the FIRE advisory period. Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade may request to drop FIRE at the quarter or semester grading period if they have shown an increase academic performance; have attended FIRE regularly; and have brought their GPA back to a 2.0 or higher and show a minimum of a.5 increase. National Honor Society Members have proven eligibility via high academic honors. The main focus is to give back to the community through community service. Advanced Placement Foothill offers Advanced Placement courses. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement tests which are given in early May. California Scholarship Federation The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) is a statewide, nationally recognized organization for students with outstanding grades in university recognized subjects. To be a member of CSF a student must first qualify, then submit an application during the brief enrollment period at the beginning of each semester and be in good standing with the organization. Bulletin announcements are made each semester regarding this. 26

A.V.I.D. (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic, regularly scheduled college preparatory elective class, to prepare students for 4-year college entrance and eligibility immediately after high school. AVID students are typically those in the middle who are often underserved, underrepresented in colleges and universities, come from a lower socioeconomic family background, or the first potential college student in their family. AVID functions to ensure that the enrolled student will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, enter the mainstream activities of the school, and become an educated and responsible participant and leader in a democratic society, all the while preparing for college. Media / Career Center The Career/Media Center provides students a small but curriculum-rich library; 38 computers for class and individual work, information on careers, colleges and scholarships, issues work permits, and collects community service hours. The media center is open before and after school each day. Three online programs are used to support career exploration and college and scholarship research. Our online career program is called Bridges Choices Explorer and it may be accessed at home or school. The site address is www.bridges.com. Each student has their own unique log-in, which can be obtained in the media center. Students set up their 4-year plan, take interest inventories, record high school rewards and community service using this powerful technology. DANCES AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES Foothill students will be allowed to attend selected dances at Buena and Ventura. A valid I.D. card is required for any student to attend a dance at any of the high schools, including Foothill. FTHS students may also buy either a Ventura or Buena ASB activity card. Leadership class will also be sponsoring activities throughout the year. FTHS dances include the following: Winter formal (couples/semi-formal) Prom (couples/formal) Spring Dance (informal) 27

FOOD SERVICES For the 2013-2014 school year, our food services department will offer lunch five days a week and services at nutrition break Monday - Friday. We have the free / reduced lunch program and encourage all those families that might be eligible to pick up an application in our front office. Families can pay for student meals through Q Parent Connection (log-in, select cafeteria then food service and payments ). Payments through Q Parent Connection can be made by credit card. HEALTH SERVICES Foothill Technology High School has a comprehensive Health Services Program. There is a Health Technician trained in first aid and CPR at the school daily. The Health Technician is supervised by a registered nurse. The credentialed School Nurse provides direct services, health education and consultation with parents and school personnel, works with students with special health needs, and assists in providing a healthful school environment. The nurse is available for private and confidential health counseling. She is available by cell phone when not on campus. Students wishing to go home from school due to illness must have a pass from their teacher and check out through the Health Office. District policy requires that every student have a parent signed Emergency Card on file. This card must be renewed each year. Only a parent or guardian listed on the Emergency Card may authorize the student to leave campus. A VUSD medication authorization form and a properly labeled medication bottle are required for students to take medication at school. Medication is kept and dispensed in the Health Office. Students may not carry prescription or over-the-counter medication. An exception is made only for certain medical conditions that require medication to be carried by the student. (ie:asthma inhalers) Authorization forms must be completed by a physician indicating this. Please check with the Health Office for the complete policy. California State Law requires that an up-to-date Immunization Record be on file with the Health Office. Students without completed Immunization Records may not attend class. 28

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (SIP) The School Site Council (SSC) is the body that oversees the disbursement of the school improvement funds and the implementation of the school improvement plan. The SSC is composed of five parents, three students, and eight FTHS staff members. Parents are elected by other parents at Back to School Night and serve a two-year term on the SSC. Students are selected by the leadership class. The SSC meets quarterly beginning in September. The SIP focus areas emphasize enhancing student achievement. SIP is involved with staff development, school climate, career development, technology, and classroom instruction.the SSC makes decisions about proposals for these programs, oversees the budget, makes recommendations about innovative programs to leadership, and evaluates programs. CLUBS There are many ways to become involved at Foothill Technology High School. Visit foothilltechnology.org/extracurriculars for a list of clubs and a more detailed explanation of what each club does, attend a club meeting or talk to a member or advisor. EQUAL ACCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS If you fall under economic hardship for any reason, please contact an administrator ASAP. TECHNOLOGY Foothill s goal is to try to provide state-of-the-art technology tools for instructional and learning purposes. When you and your parent/guardians signed the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), you agreed to act in a responsible manner regarding the equipment and the Internet. Passwords-- 1. Network: You will receive a network login and password. This will allow you to access the FTHS network. All students and staff have a directory on the FTHS file server. You can access your directory from many student computers on campus. District-provided network storage is extremely limited, unavailable from home, and needs to be deleted at the end of every school year. We encourage students to use personal cloud-based storage services such as Google Drive to store their work. 2. Q-Connect password Students and parents should check grades and assignment scores online through Q-Connect. To obtain a password, Parents/Guardians must have a current signed copy of the Parent Connect Application in the student s file. Applications are sent home in the Foothill Summer Mailer and must be returned in person to the school; parents/guardians must provide a photo ID at that time. Student passwords will be available in EDA classes or in the office by student request. 3. Wireless: Foothill has wireless throughout campus. Students will receive a weekly guest wireless password from teachers, which they may use with their personal devices. DO NOT SHARE YOUR PASSWORDS WITH ANYONE. IF YOU FEEL SOMEONE HAS FIGURED OUT YOUR PASSWORDS, SEE MRS. WANTZ IN THE MAIN OFFICE FOR NEW ONES. 31

Information Regarding Student Fees (From V.U.S.D) The Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to students free of charge. A student s right to a free education is for all school / educational activities whether curricular or extracurricular, and whether a student gets a grade for the activity or class. Subject to certain exceptions, a student s right to a free public education means that we cannot require students to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity, nor can we require students to pay security deposits for access, participation, materials or equipment. Your school may require students to attend a fundraising event; however, if they are unable to raise funds for the event, we cannot prevent students from participating in an educational activity. Some* of these exceptions are: Charges for optional attendance as a spectator at a school or District sponsored event. Charges for food served to students, subject to free and reduced price meal program eligibility and other restrictions specified in law. Paying the replacement cost for district books or supplies loaned to a student that the student fails to return, or that is willfully cut, defaced or otherwise injured, up to an amount not to exceed $10,000. Fees for field trips and excursions in connection with courses of instruction or school related social, educational, cultural, athletic, or school band activities as long as no student is prevented from making the field trip or excursion because of lack of sufficient funds. Medical or hospital insurance for field trips that is made available by the school district. Charges for required medical and accident insurance for athletic team members, so long as there is a waiver for financial hardship. Charging for the parking of vehicles on school grounds. Charges for the rental or lease of personal property needed for District purposes, such as caps and gowns for graduation ceremonies. Reimbursement for the district cost of materials provided to a student for property the student has fabricated from such materials for his/her own possession and use, such as wood shop, art, or sewing projects kept by the student. Reimbursement for the actual cost of duplicating public records, student records or a prospectus of the school curriculum.
