Illinois Nurses Foundation Anne Zimmerman Fellowship

Anne Zimmerman Anne Zimmerman served as Executive Director of the Illinois Nurses Association from 1954-1981, and President of the American Nurses Association from 1976-1978. She was one of a select handful of courageous women and men who, over the last 60 years, transformed nursing from an underpaid and underappreciated job to a respected profession. In 1997, Mrs. Zimmerman s immense contribution to her profession was recognized by the American Academy of Nursing when it named her one of its Living Legends. After her service with the American Nurses Association, Anne went on to become a founding member of the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice. Anne s leadership in representing nurses and her outstanding collaborative and management skills fostered INA growth. In the 20 plus years in which Mrs. Zimmerman was Executive Director, INA grew as a professional organization, fostering the idea that nurses could take responsibility for their practice and education. To honor Anne Zimmerman s memory and keep alive her spirit of commitment to promoting leadership in INA, the Anne Zimmerman Fellowship was created. The first Anne Zimmerman fellow was selected in 2005. The Fellowship Program The purpose of the Anne Zimmerman Fellowship is to promote excellence in leadership within the Illinois Nurses Association (INA). The candidate for this fellowship shall: 1. Have current membership in INA 2. Have demonstrated leadership in the association at least at the district or local unit level; 3. Have demonstrated leadership in related nursing or community activities; 4. Aspire to greater leadership responsibility within the INA; and 5. Identify an issue, focus or interest area that contributes to the mission of INA and develop a project proposal. Fellowships are awarded biennially. Interested members may request an application beginning March 1, 2011. The chosen Fellow will be provided a honorarium/stipend to help fund the proposed fellowship project Applications may be requested by sending an email to INF@illinoisnurses.com or by calling 312-419-2900. Purpose: To promote excellence in leadership within the Illinois Nurses Association (INA). Scope: Participate in activities that reflect the multipurpose nature of the Illinois Nurses Association. Develop leadership on an emerging issue that contributes to the Illinois Nurses Association s Strategic Plan. Criteria: The candidate for this Fellowship shall: 1. Have demonstrated leadership in the INA and/or SNAI at the district, or local unit level. 2. Have demonstrated leadership in related nursing or community activities. 3. Aspire to greater leadership responsibility within the Illinois Nurses Association. 4. Identify an issue, focus or interest area that contributes to the mission of the Illinois Nurses Association. Procedure: 1. The announcement of the Fellowship will be: a. Published in Illinois Nurse. b. Posted on the INA website. c. Distributed through the leadership structure. 2. Interested members may request an application from INA headquarters or from the INA website at www.illinoisnurses.com. 3. The deadline for receiving completed applications will be announced in Illinois Nurse and on the INA website. 4. Applicants are to submit: a. A biographical sketch that includes leadership experiences in both the INA or SNAI and related nursing and/or community activities; P AGE 2

b. A brief statement outlining their commitment and aspiration for future leadership responsibilities; c. Three letters of recommendation that demonstrate the candidate s leadership skills including leadership within the INA and/or SNAI and related nursing or community activities, commitment to nursing and INA, and the capacity to contribute to INA s mission and strategic plan. d. A typed proposal, maximum of eight pages with standard one inch margins and a font no smaller than 12 point that addresses the following: i. A focus area that is congruent with INA s Strategic Plan ii. Background and context for selection of the focus area iii. Goals and objectives iv. Implementation plan, description of work product(s) and budget v. Evaluation 5. Applications not received at INA headquarters by 11:59PM CST on the established deadline will not be considered. 6. Applications will be reviewed by an Illinois Nurses Foundation Boardappointed review committee, which shall include the INA President and Executive Director or their designees. An honorarium/stipend to help fund the fellowship will be determined by the Illinois Nurses Foundation Board pending review of the proposed activities. 7. Applicants will be notified of the Board s action by September 1 st. 8. The candidate will be assigned a mentor by the Foundation Board within three to four months after the application deadline. 9. The candidate will have 12-15 months to complete the project, which will be showcased at the next convention and disseminated as appropriate. A progress report at six to eight months must be submitted to the Illinois Nurses Foundation Board of Directors.
