You may not realize it, but you will seldom have a night at an opera, symphony or play in Canada without experiencing the work or performance of a graduate of an RBC Emerging Artists Support Project Over 30 Projects across Canada help young artists bridge the gap from the academic to the professional world, not only in theatre and musical performance, but also in writing, film-making, glassmaking, playwrighting, curatorship, design and choreography. We are proud of all of them - and especially of their young graduates.

RBC Emerging Artists Support Project The following are our national and international support projects, by charity partner name: Banff Centre for Continuing Education (2 programs) Canadian Art Foundation Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery Canadian Museums Association Canadian Opera Company Festival of the Sound Fondation pour l avancement du théâtre francophone au Canada Glenn Gould School, Royal Conservatory of Music National Ballet of Canada and Canada s National Ballet School Stratford Shakespearean Festival of Canada Tarragon Theatre Company Toronto International Film Festival Writers Trust of Canada In addition, RBC supports more regionally focused emerging artist projects. 1

RBC is the lead supporter of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, a highly anticipated triennial event which is one of the leading international music competitions for young string quartets, who perform for a distinguished jury and enthusiastic audiences. Winners usually perform in the Banff Summer Arts Festival, for which RBC is presenting sponsor. Also through the Banff Centre, the RBC YES Program provides as many as 30 young artists from across Canada with scholarships each year. Scholarships have been given for dance apprentices and professionals and dance training, and for residencies in music, opera, visual arts and theatre The RBC Canadian Painting Competition, with the partnership of the Canadian Art Foundation, provides a forum to engage communities across Canada and celebrate the exceptional skill of our up-and-coming visual artists. Each year the competition is hosted in multiple cities across Canada, providing exposure to thousands of viewers. The RBC Canadian Glassmaking Award is hosted and juried by the Canadian Clay and Glass Museum. Young glass artists from across Canada are invited to demonstrate their talents to a national jury. The award funds travel to support the artist s research in style or technique. The RBC Museum Internship for Emerging Professionals in partnership with the Canadian Museums Association provides a quality internship and enhanced learning experience for an emerging museum/gallery professional, including graduates of museum and arts studies programs, curators, conservators and arts administrators. The internship will be 4 to 6 months in duration. RBC has long supported the education and outreach initiatives of the Canadian Opera Company, and is the Major Supporter of its Ensemble Studio Program, which trains directors, music coaches and conductors as well as singers. Members are chosen through a national audition process and receive a blend of advanced study and practical experience in their own and in full COC productions. Graduates perform with every Canadian company and many have developed international reputations. The RBC Stockey Young Artist is chosen by the Festival of the Sound artistic directors. This outstanding young person of talent is the featured performer of the opening night of the annual summer Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, Ontario. The RBC Guest Conductor Program at the Glenn Gould School, the professional musician program of the Royal Conservatory of Music, brings internationally renowned conductors to train and nurture exceptional young musicians for a series of public performances. Young musicians are exposed to varying leadership styles, musical interpretation and career opportunities. The Fondation pour l avancement du théâtre francophone au Canada support s and encourages the development of the francophone theatre community outside the province of Quebec and encourages excellence in the arts in French-speaking communities across the country. Our support funds the RBC National Outstanding Achievement Award in Francophone Theatre Arts. RBC s support of National Ballet of Canada s Apprentice Program provided male and female graduates of Canada s professional conservatories to continue building their technical skills while adapting to a professional schedule. Canada s National Ballet School s Post Secondary Program assisted advanced senior students to make the transition from aspiring student to professional dancer. These programs are now joined in YOU Dance, providing school outreach performance opportunities along with opportunities to expand their dance skills. RBC supports the Stratford Shakespearean Festival s Conservatory for Classical Theatre. Each year 8 to 12 young artists are selected through an extensive coastto-coast audition process to spend a full-time 20 week training period with a number of instructors, coaches, directors and senior artists. Classes are held in mask, stage combat, speech and diction, history, period song and dance and other skills to strengthen their understanding of Shakespearean and classical works. The RBC/Tarragon National Under 30 Playwright Competition in partnership with Tarragon Theatre provides finalists with an intensive session at the theatre, renowned for its commitment to developing Canadian plays, to be mentored and have their work read by professional actors. 2

The RBC Emerging Talent Bursary in partnership with Toronto International Film Festival, provides support for young filmmakers admitted to the TIFF Talent Lab, an intensive program that offers artistic development opportunities to emerging Canadian filmmakers. Writers Trust of Canada was established by writers to provide encouragement, mentoring and recognition to Canada s novelists. The RBC Bronwen Wallace Emerging Writer Award is an annual award to the winner of an open juried competition to recognize and celebrate a young writer and help further their development towards becoming a successful professional. The winning submission is circulated to hundreds of people in the writing and publishing world, providing a very special kick off to a career. Western Canada: The Art Gallery of Alberta s RBC New Works Project, delivered through the RBC New Works Gallery, represents the leading edge of innovation and exploration in the arts of the 21st century with a special focus on Alberta s contemporary artists and Canadian emerging artists of tomorrow. The Gallery will be part of the AGA s educational outreach programming. At Capilano College in North Vancouver, RBC provides funding to the Musical Theatre and Acting Program for Stage & Screen which trains students for a professional acting career in live theatre, television and film. Students perform in safe classroom environments, student produced theatre and film projects and theatre department productions. Richmond BC s Gateway Theatre Society is the only live professional regional theatre offering educational experience for youth who are interested in a possible career in the arts. RBC supports the Educational Outreach Experience Project through which over 100 high school students are selected each year to attend a full day workshop at the theatre where they are exposed to the many career options in the field. RBC s support of the LEAP Program at the Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Society supports playwriting classes with a working professional, live and online sessions, tours and networking with theatre professionals. The program includes professional readings of students plays. The Emerging Artist Development Program at Calgary Opera Association is in its third year and provides up to eight young singers the opportunity to study and perform under professional staff of teachers and performers. The program bridges the gap between the academic world of training and their professional opera career. Running from October to May, the Emerging Artist program is receiving recognition across Canada as the place to start a singer s professional career. The artists are given supporting roles in the annual productions, take part in school performances, recitals and concert tours within the community. Theatre Calgary s Artist Development Program FUEL program consists of three components: Playwright Circle, Director Circle and the Stephen Hair Emerging Actor Award. The program provides theatre artists an environment to grow their skills in a professional environment and receive career mentorship from the Artistic Director. Each participant works on a large project with the theatre company during the year long program. The National Screen Institute s New Voices Program is an annual Winnipeg-based 14-week program for young Aboriginal adults aged 18 to 35 and the only one of its kind in the country. The curriculum connects the participants with film and television professionals and provides practical experiences over six weeks of skills development training and an eight-week full-time industry internship to provide participants with a wellrounded understanding of industry job requirements and to encourage them to explore the possibilities of a career in the film and television industry. Central Canada: Many young actors have formal training, but lack professional experience. RBC s Shaw Apprentice Actor program allows them to gain this experience through performance classes in areas such as voice and dialect, Alexander technique, pilates, scene study, period study and the business of acting as well as performing in several of the season s plays with the Shaw Festival Theatre s multi-stage company. RBC sponsors the Toronto Arts Council Foundation s annual Mayor s Lunch for the Arts, at which RBC presents the RBC Emerging Artist Award to a juried winner working in any arts discipline. 3

The RBC Aldeburgh Discovery Recitals are a joint presentation of the University of Toronto s Faculty of Music and the Aldeburgh Connection. These concerts of art song provide talented young performers with an opportunity to expand their repertoire and stage experience as they develop into the recital and concert artists of tomorrow. At Toronto s Canadian Stage Company, RBC supports the CanStage Academy. Founded in 1992, the Academy provides training and education programs that include skills exchange between artists and staff, and the further training of young actors, designers and directors through the development of new plays by aspiring playwrights. The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra s Mentorship Program, supported by RBC, allows approximately 15 gifted students each year from the University of Ottawa s Department of Music to perform as regular players. These talented young musicians, in the final stages of their pre-professional training, gain invaluable experience under the guidance and leadership of seasoned professional performers/ mentors, both on and off stage, and in rehearsal and performance situations. Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) is the artistic training centre of Atlantic Canada. Through the RBC NSCAD Emerging Artist Project, NSCAD artists hang work in RBC offices in downtown Halifax and RBC presents the annual graduation gallery show, bringing new viewers and potential patrons to the young artists work. The RBC Moncton Library Emerging Artist Project developed from the renovation of the display boards in the entrance to the building. There is a vernissage for the first showing of every art exhibition held on a weekday during lunch time to attract downtown business people and workers. The exhibitions change regularly and showcase the art of the best of New Brunswick s young artists. At PEI s Confederation Centre for the Arts RBC supports the Emerging Artists Series within the Art Gallery. The new exhibition series focuses on Canada s emerging visual arts and will consist of solo exhibitions of about 2 months duration of each emerging artist s work. Each exhibition will be displayed consecutively in the the entrance gallery, which is easily accessible to the Centre s visitor traffic that number 250,000 people on an annual basis. Theatre Artist Support at the Théâtre Populaire d Acadie provides internships for young francophone artists to work with mentors in the professional production of their work. 4

Emerging Artist Grant Information There are two types of grants offered under the RBC Emerging Artist Project: 1. Program Grants RBC is interested in supporting apprentice programs that: Provide a structured curriculum of mentorship and training, typically for a period of three to six months, although shorter more intensive programming may be considered; Provide an opportunity for interaction between the professional staff, visiting artists and the Emerging Artists; Serve as a bridge between senior academic programs and the professional world; Engage the broader community in the art form, through free performances or programming to underserviced or rural communities. 2. Award Grants RBC is interested in supporting organizations that offer Emerging Artists awards that: Are part of an overall program dedicated to supporting apprentices and pre-professional artists; Have impact other than a cash prize (eg requirement that funds are used to travel for research purposes, to work as an apprentice or to meet a mentor) ; Recognize artists at an early stage in their artistic career who are dedicated to the professional practice of the art, as evidenced by a significant investment of time and resources; Open new and expanded avenues for arts and artists.
