AP vs. IB AP Goal: earn college credits for specific courses. Students take exams in areas of strength. AP courses can be taken in any grade Marks are based on exams graded externally by the College Board AP Office; based solely on exam performance. Exams are based on in-depth mastery of specific concepts within a given subject. Emphasis on multiple choice questions. National standard of excellence IB Goal: college-level courses, strong foundation to prepare students for college, earn college credit Students prepare in all academic areas, must complete core requirements: CAS, extended essay and Theory of Knowledge class. QLS IB courses only taken during 11 th -12 th grade Marks are a result of internal and external assessments: written exams, oral exams, guided coursework, portfolios, and lab experiments. Exams focus on breadth and depth, understanding of concepts and fundamental themes. Greater emphasis on writing and authentic assessment. International standard of excellence.
