Note The e-mail configuration settings are consumed by the classes in the System.Net.Mail namespace. ASP.NET applications must use this namespace in for the configuration settings to have any effect. Note The SMTP server is not installed by default. SMTP can be added through the Features Summary area of the Server Manager tool in Windows Server 2008. 4

INSTALL SMTP Configure SMTP E-Mail in IIS 7 The SMTP server is not installed by default. 1. Open Server Manager by right-clicking on My Computer, and selecting Manage. (Alternately, open Control Panel, click on Programs and Features, and then select Turn Windows features on or off.) 2. Under Features, select Add Features. 3. Select the SMTP Server check box. 4. Click Add Required Role Services. If there are any missing roles required for the SMTP installation, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 installs them. Click Next. 5. You need to step through the entire wizard again; even though IIS is already installed (IIS 6 Management Compatibility and the IIS 6 Management Console must be installed for SMTP to work). 6. Press Close when installation is complete. 5

CONFIGURE RELAY FOR SMTP VIRTUAL SERVER 1. Enable Relay for localhost: a. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager. b. Right-click on Default SMTP Virtual Server. 2. On the Properties page, open the Access tab, and then click on Connection. You can see which server or IP addresses are allowed to connect to the server. 3. If the IP address 127.0.0.1 is not listed, add it using the Add button. You may also add your server IP address to the list. 4. Click OK to accept the information. 5. Click the Relay button on the Access tab, and set up the relay options for the server. Ensure that localhost and the IP address 127.0.0.1 are granted permission to relay mail. 6. Click OK to accept the options, and then click Apply and OK to return to the main page of the IIS Manager. 7. Click Restart IIS. 6

CONFIGURE SMTP E-MAIL FOR WEB APPLICATION Use the User Interface 1. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, and then navigate to the level you want to manage. 2. Click on website/virtual directory. 3. Double click on Application Settings. 4. Change smtpserver key value to localhost or 127.0.0.1. 7

CONFIGURING SMART HOSTS (IIS 6.0) You can route all outgoing messages for remote domains through a smart host instead of sending them directly to the domain. This enables you to route messages over a connection that may be more direct or less costly than other routes. The smart host is similar to the route domain option for remote domains. The difference is that, after a smart host is designated; all outgoing messages are routed to that server. With a route domain, only messages for the remote domain are routed to a specific server. Important Make sure your designated smart host is secure and administered by a trusted authority, especially when forwarding sensitive information. If you set up a smart host, you can still designate a different route for a remote domain. The route domain setting overrides the smart host setting. You can identify the smart host by fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or an IP address (but if you change the IP address, you would have to change it on every virtual server as well). If you use an IP address, enclose it in brackets ([ ]) to increase system performance. The SMTP service checks first for a server name, and then an IP address. The brackets identify the value as an IP address, so the DNS lookup is bypassed. Important you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc systemroot\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc". TO SET UP A SMART HOST 1. In IIS Manager, right-click the SMTP virtual server, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Delivery tab, and click Advanced. 3. In the Smart host box, type the name of the smart host server. You can type a string to represent a name or enter an IP address. 4. If you want the SMTP service to attempt to deliver remote messages directly before forwarding them to the smart host server, select the Attempt direct delivery before sending to smart host check box. The default is to send all remote messages to the smart host, not to attempt direct delivery. 8
