DEPARTMENT B: COMMUNICATIONS & EXPRESSIVE ARTS County Fair Only Projects Division 150 Banner/Booth/Club Exhibit Class 901 Banner 1. Each banner should illustrate a phase of 4-H work or promote 4-H generally. Copyrighted materials cannot be used. 2. When using the official 4-H Emblem (clover with the H s on each leaf), it must follow approved guidelines, which can be viewed at: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/emblem/4h_name.htm. 3. Banners are a two dimensional display depicting one idea. Dimensions are to be 3 x 6. The banners can be arranged horizontally or vertically but will be displayed with the 3 side on the top. The exhibit will not be penalized for being arranged horizontally. 4. Banners must be hung on at least a 1/2 dowel or a rod strong enough to support the banner. The dowel should be at least 2 inches longer than the banner. The dowel should be on the 3 foot side so banner will hang 3 feet across and 6 feet long. Banners mounted any other way risk not being displayed due to technical problems. 5. Banners should be made of materials that permit the banner to be folded or rolled without damaging the display. Three dimensional objects should not be attached to the front of the banner. 6. Attach a label and an entry tag to the front, lower left-hand (as you face it) corner of the banner. The label should include the name of the club and county. Letters on this label should be 2 in height. Class 902 Booth Each 4-H Club or individual may exhibit one booth. One central theme should be followed for each booth. Booth space is in the 4-H Exhibit Hall and booths are approximately 6 x 6. Booth space is granted on a first come first serve basis with preference given to 4-H clubs. Reserve booth space by calling the County Extension Office. Class 903 Club Exhibit This is an exhibit that will be displayed outside on the fairgrounds and not in the 4-H Exhibit Hall. Examples of this are decorated hay bales, decorated and planted flower barrels, decorated trash barrels, etc. Make sure these exhibits are weatherproof. They also need a weather proof sign on the display indicating the club name. The club is responsible for bringing the exhibit to the fairgrounds, setting it up and taking it down. Division 150 Club Officer Projects Class 904 Secretary Book Book must be complete to date and contain a clear report of all activities for the year. Book must be entered by club secretary. Class 905 News Reporter Poster Entered by club news reporter. Should include four (4) news articles from the current year s club activities. Articles should be placed of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper or on a 14 x 22 poster. News articles should include date they appeared in newspaper. Class 906 4-H Club Scrapbook

Express Yourself Projects: Communications 1 Picking Up the Pieces Printed Youth Materials: NATL4H08156 Communications 1 Picking Up the Pieces, General Instructions: Express Yourself For each class, create an educational exhibit (a poster (14 x 22 ), an essay (3-5 pages), a video (1-3 minutes), or small display of educational nature) that displays the information requested. Division 153 Level 1: Picking Up the Pieces Classes 900-902 are ineligible for State Fair Class 901 Now Hear This Digitally record (using audio and/or video) yourself reading a children s book. Give the digital recording to a younger person in your community and watch them listen/view the recording of the book. Create an exhibit that displays the digital recording, a summary of what you learned by watching the child listen/view your recording, and other ways you can use communication skills to help young children. Class 902 Follow My Lead Make a set of directions to a place in your community (school, church, meeting place, etc.). Work with community leaders or other officials to share these directions with those who they would help. Create an exhibit that displays the directions, where the directions are being shared, and how the directions benefit your community. Class 903 Simple Symbols Design a new symbol or logo that would communicate a specific message to others in your 4-H clubs, school, or community. Propose the use of this symbol to the leaders of the group. Create an exhibit that highlights the new symbol, explains the symbol s meaning, and shares how the symbol will be used.

General Instructions: Posters Posters Purpose: The purpose of a poster is to call attention to a subject. Every poster must be crafted to catch the viewer s attention quickly. Each must present only one specific message clearly. The poster should clearly feature some aspect of 4-H. Posters Will be Judged on the Following Criteria: 1. Idea: Simple, clear message, appropriate for a poster. 2. Lettering: Readable from a distance, appropriate size in proportion to art. 3. Art: One dominant, eye-catching element, relates to written message. 4. Arrangement: Makes good use of entire poster space without being too crowded: art and lettering are well balanced. 5. Color: Use of bold colors that harmonize well, colors used are legible. 6. Quality of Construction: Neatness, appropriateness of materials used. 7. Effectiveness: Works well as a poster. 8. Size: Entries which do not conform to size, content or material guidelines will be lowered one ribbon placing. Posters must be 14 x 22 and must be of a material that can be pinned to a display board. They may be arranged either horizontally or vertically. Those generated by computer must also meet this standard. Computer art generated on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper and mounted on poster board will be disqualified. Posters May Be in Any Medium: Watercolor, ink, crayon, markers or computer graphics etc. They may not be three-dimensional. Entries with components thicker than paper (such as milk cartons, pencils, pop cans) will be disqualified. Posters May Not Use Copyrighted Materials: Materials such as cartoon characters or commercial product names, logos or slogans. Avoid using clichés or over-used phrases that do not command the viewer s attention. 4-H Emblem: When using the official 4-H Emblem (clover with the H s on each leaf), it must follow approved guidelines, which can be viewed at: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/emblem/4h_name.htm. Original Design: Computer clip art will not be scored as positively as original computer art designs. Label: The 4-H member s name, address, age, full address and county must be listed on the back of the poster. Poster Covering: Posters may be laminated to protect them. Loose plastic coverings used to protect the exhibit while being transported will be removed by the superintendent for evaluation and display. Division 154 Class 901 Exploring Careers with 4-H The poster should illustrate how 4-H ers can explore career opportunities through 4-H projects. Class 902 Photo Poster The poster should focus on a 4-H theme of your choice, using one large, eyecatching photo. Class 903 Keeping it Green...Keeping it Healthy The poster should illustrate how 4-H encourages healthy lifestyles for youth and their families. Class 904 Open Theme This class allows 4-H members to create a poster and a theme to go with it. Class may be used for any 4-H project without a specific poster class.

Theatre Arts Projects: Theatre Arts 1 (Clover Kids), Theatre Arts 2: Becoming a Puppeteer! Puppetry, Theatre Arts 3: Setting the Stage! Stage Craft Printed Youth Material: NATL4H08070 Theatre Arts 1: Play the Role--Acting, NATL4H08071 Theatre Arts 2: Becoming a Puppeteer! Puppetry, NATL4H08072 Theatre Arts 3: Setting the Stage! Stage Craft Division 161 Class 901 Costume Made or decorated by 4-H er for use in a theater arts production. Costume could be for self or others. Class 902 Portfolio A collection of photographs, sketches or other samples illustrating the theatre arts learning such as costume design, stage make-up, written scripts, set design or other related learning. Class 903 Puppet Made by the 4-H er for use in a theatre arts production. Class 904 Script Written by the 4-H er for a play, musical, skit, puppet show or other type of theatre arts production. Class 905 You Be the Teacher Share with others what you learned in this project. Exhibit may be a poster, notebook, display, audiotape or videotape.

Photography Level 1 Projects: Focus on Photography Printed Youth Materials: PC1 Focus on Photography Level 1, Division 180 Unit One: Focus on Photography Unit I Picture Displays: Three 4 x 6 photos mounted on a single horizontal 11 x 14 black (preferred) or white poster or matting board. Every photo on picture display must be pencil numbered (no. 2 lead pencil) below (for judge s reference only.) Numbers should be readable but not detract from display. No titles, captions, or stick-on numbers will be allowed. Photos must be mounted vertically or horizontally. Personal data Tags (parts A and B) are required. Unit I Photo Journal: Choose project area 1, 2, 3, or 4 in the Level 1 project manual titled Focus on Photography. Complete the pages associated with the project area of your choice (project 1, 2, 3 or 4) or recreate and print the pages (still using actual photos). Place pages in an 8 1/2 x 1 black or white 3 ring binder. Personal Data Tags are required. For your journal complete Part A only and include this as a page of your journal. Class 901 Photo Journal An entry will consist of a single completed and bound section of project 1, 2, 3, or 4 in the level 1 project manual titled Focus on Photography. Class 902 Picture Story Display Entry will consist of a display of 3 photos that tell the beginning, middle and end of a story. Class 903 Fun With Shadows Display Entry will consist of 3 pictures of 3 different subjects that capture the image of the shadow. Class 904 Magic and Tricks Display Entry will consist of a display of 3 pictures of 3 different subjects that use a special effect to create interesting photos. Class 905 My Favorite Other Picture Any other favorite photo. Exhibit may range in size from 3 x 5 to 8 x 10 mounted in appropriate size cut matting (no frames) with a sandwich backing.
