FACULTY BIOS HonorHealth Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program Jason Tjeerdsma, PT, DPT, OCS, CIDN Dr. Tjeerdsma graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2011 with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. He then completed the Scottsdale Healthcare Orthopedic Residency Program in 2014 and is currently enrolled in a manual therapy fellowship through the Manual Therapy Institute. Jason is a board certified Orthopedic Specialist, certified in Dry Needling, and a Performance Enhancement Specialist. Jason enjoys using a variety of treatment approaches to best suit each patient in helping them achieve their goals and get them moving better. He has a particular interest in joint manipulation and enjoys the cervical spine and foot/ankle. Jason is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Arizona Physical Therapy Association. He enjoys golf, football, movies, and spending time with his wife, Michelle, and their son, Preston. Matthew Schroeder, PT, DPT, OCS Dr. Schroeder graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA with a BA in Kinesiology before going onto physical therapy school at Duke University in Durham, NC where he graduated in 2004. He began his physical therapy career in Phoenix where he worked in a private practice setting that focused on rehabilitating patient following industrial injuries. Matt began working at HonorHealth in 2006 and is currently a Supervisor of Outpatient Therapy Services. In 2008 Matt became board certified in Orthopedics through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. Matt has assisted in developing the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency Program and HonorHealth/Northern Arizona University Residency Program in Neurological Physical Therapy and serves as the coordinator for both programs. Matt is active in professional organizations having served as a member of the APTA House of Delegates, treasurer for the Arizona Physical Therapy Association, treasurer for the Arizona Physical Therapy Directors, and a member of the Program Services Committee for the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education. Matt s goal is to continue to raise the level of practice and recognition for the physical therapy profession. Outside of work Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and exploring the outdoors with his two sons through backpacking, mountain biking, riding dirt bikes, and camping.
Jeff Abernethy, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, CIDN Dr. Abernethy graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1996 with a Bachelor s of Science degree in Physical Therapy. Jeff graduated from Northern Arizona University, in 2010, with a Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy. He has performed extensive work in outpatient orthopedics, specializing in manual and manipulative therapy. Jeff became an Orthopedic Certified Specialist in 2008 through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. He completed a clinical residency and fellowship through The Manual Therapy Institute and gained Fellowship status with the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist. Jeff serves as the system-wide Clinical Specialist/Educator and is a faculty member in the HonorHealth Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program. Jeff has also developed and taught several continuing education courses and presented at professional conferences. Jeff is active in the professional organizations serving as the Chair of the AzPTA Practice Committee and a member of the Accreditation Services Committee of the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education. Jeff specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of spine and extremity injuries. Jennifer Hinsberger, PT, OCS, CSCS, PMA-CPT Ms. Hinsberger has her BS from University of Arizona in Nutritional Sciences and Exercise Physiology, and her Masters of Physical Therapy from Wichita State University. Jennifer has been treating orthopedic and sports injuries since 1996. Jennifer has been certified as a strength and conditioning specialists (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 1997 and nationally certified (PMA-CPT) in Pilates Training through the Pilates Method Alliance since 2007. She focuses on movement impairments and postural corrections to improve the economy of motion, reduce pain, and improve function. She utilizes manual skills to treat joint and soft tissue restrictions and neuromuscular re-education to improved each person s coordination and strength. Jennifer values each client and encourages reaching for optimal outcomes. Jennifer lectures in the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency with special focus on hip pathology, sacroiliac dysfunction, and Movement Impairment Syndromes. Jennifer has been part of the American Physical Therapy Association House of Delegates representing the physical therapy voice of Arizona in with the goal of improving the profession.
Griffin Lee, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Dr. Lee attended Arizona State University where he received a BS degree in Kinesiology. He then attended Duke University where he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2010. Following graduation from Duke, Griffin completed the Scottsdale Healthcare Orthopedic Residency program. He went on to complete a fellowship program in manual therapy in 2014 through The Manual Therapy Institute. Griffin is a board certified clinical specialist (OCS). He is an APTA certified clinical instructor, certified in dry needling, and trained in instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). Griffin's clinical interests include evaluation and treatment of lumbar and cervical spine disorders, including headaches. Griffin is a member of the APTA, the Orthopedic Section, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist (AAOMPT). Kylie Eilders, PT, DPT, OCS Dr. Eilders obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ in 2002 and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from NAU in 2005. She began working in the Phoenix area in private practice in 2005 and began with HonorHealth in 2010 with a focus in orthopedics. She is currently a faculty member of the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency Program and a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. Kylie has furthered her education by pursuing a manual therapy certification through North American Institute of Manual Therapy and is completing Level 3 certification, working towards full COMT certification by the end of 2016. Kylie is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Arizona Physical Therapy Association. Kylie takes a special interest in treating spine patients and will be the primary physical therapist at the HonorHealth Spine Center Arizona. Kylie s goals are to continue pursuing educational opportunities to provide excellent patient care with the most current research throughout her career. Outside of work, Kylie enjoys hiking, running and spending time with her husband Robert and their dog, MacDaddy.
Dianne Carpenter, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT Dr. Carpenter began her educational career in Boston where she graduated with honors from Boston College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a Health Science Concentration. Dianne attended Boston University s Sargent College where she earned her Master s of Science in Physical Therapy in 1998. She went on to work for Boston Medical Center while simultaneously completing her transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy from Boston University in 2005. In 2003, Dr. Carpenter relocated to Arizona where she began her Orthopedic and Manual therapy training with The Manual Therapy Institute. She completed her COMT in 2007 and later went on to complete her fellowship training at Scottsdale Healthcare in 2013. Dianne joined HonorHealth in 2015 with an interest in working with students during their clinical rotations and mentoring residents. Her clinical interests are spine and extremity dysfunctions in the orthopedic patient. She is an active member of both the APTA and AAOMPT. Currently, Dr. Carpenter lives in Goodyear, Arizona with her husband, son and 2 dogs. Jodi Barnum, PT, DPT, OCS Dr. Barnum is a faculty member of the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency Program and a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. She obtained a Bachelors degree in Biology at Towson University in Baltimore, MD and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at NAU in Flagstaff, AZ in 2005. She has worked for HonorHealth Outpatient Therapy Service since that time. She has furthered her education by completing the Shirley Sahrmann s long term course on movement system impairments syndromes and Chris Power s long term course on Functional Biomechanics of the Lower Quarter. She has also completed a course on instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). Her treatment approach utilizes manual therapy and IASTM but relies heavily on diagnosing and correcting movement dysfunctions, postures, and lower extremity biomechanics that can contribute to pain and injury. She is also able to provide Running Evaluations and Return to Sport evaluations using a specialized treadmill with pressure plates and high speed video cameras.
Kelly Chavez-Allen, PT, DPT, CHT Dr. Chavez-Allen graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Physiological Sciences in 1998 and then continued on at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ where she was awarded a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2001. Early in her career Kelly developed a passion for treating upper extremity injuries and this lead her to become a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) in 2007 through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. Kelly began working at HonorHealth in 2011 as a hand therapist and a faculty member of the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency Program. Kelly is a member of several professional organizations, the American Physical Therapy Association, the Hand Therapy Section, and the American Society of Hand Therapists. Kelly excels at fabricating splints and treating patient with traumatic injuries, chronic pathologies, and post-operative patients. Outside of work Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband and daughters. Colleen Coakley, PT, OCS, CIMT, CGFI, CDN Ms. Coakley is a Supervisor of Outpatient Therapy Services for HonorHealth and a faculty member in the HonorHealth Orthopedic Residency Program. She obtained her Bachelor s degree in Biology and her Masters degree in Physical Therapy at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1998 and has worked for HonorHealth Outpatient Therapy Services since that time. Colleen is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, a Certified Integrated Manual Therapist, a Certified Golf Fitness Instructor, and Certified in Dry Needling. She has completed Shirley Sahrmann s long term course on movement system impairments syndromes and utilizes a multimodal approach including manual therapy, individualized exercise instruction, and education on improving postures and movement patterns for multiple orthopedic and post-operative conditions.
