Integrated and reliable the heart of your iseries system i5/os the next generation iseries operating system
Highlights Enables the legendary levels of reliability and simplicity for which iseries systems are known Linux, WebSphere, Java, Workplace and Domino support all integrated into the system gives you the flexibility to choose the applications you want to run your business with the reliability and security you need Key functions such as database, Web capabilities, security, virus resistance, networking, online help and more are integrated into the system i5/os integrated and reliable You need to run your business. You need your IT systems to just work every day. i5/os on an iseries system can help you meet these needs. All key functions are integrated into the system. With i5/os, a business can simply and rapidly deploy applications with seamless integration of new and existing data. With extensions to its legendary robust security and networking options, i5/os enables highly secure and reliable connectivity from suppliers, to partners, to employees, to customers. i5/os is fully integrated right out of the box. This means that relational database, communication and networking capabilities, online help, Web enablement technologies, easy enterprise management and much more are fully integrated into the operating system and the machine. The user communicates with all components of i5/os using a single command language or a simple unified graphical user interface (GUI). i5/os helps you simplify your IT environment with support for Linux, Windows Server 1, Java and UNIX applications within a single, easy-tomanage system. It combines high availability with superior application workload management and logical partitioning (LPAR). The next generation of applications can be quickly deployed and managed in a single, partitioned system alongside current business applications. 2
Ease-of-use Even the best IT solution is useless if it takes an army of techs to manage it. i5/os is renowned for its ease-of-use and management. A key component of this ease-of-use is the iseries Navigator. This graphical interface lets you perform many common administrative database options. You can create, change, delete, move and copy database objects. You can enter data into tables, view table contents, run SQL scripts, graphically display the relationships of your database objects and perform other database management tasks. i5/os also offers key business continuity features. Online database maintenance can be performed while users are accessing and changing the database providing for around-the-clock operation. Data recovery can be at an object level. This allows you to restore a single file when necessary. It is not necessary to restore the entire database to fix a single file. You can also roll forward and backward to recover database records, allowing database changes made after the last backup to be reapplied after a restore, or for recent changes to be backed out if the database needs to be returned to a specific state. This can be done for a specific user, time or job. Networking i5/os offers many integrated capabilities and functions that enable highly secure communications on your network, either in batch or interactive modes, allowing your iseries to integrate into your distributed business systems. Of course, iseries offers TCP/IP connectivity and the traditional SNA hierarchy. With capabilities for SNA peer networks and Systems Application Architecture (SAA ) standards, the system offers extraordinary flexibility possible in network design. If most of your file and print serving functions are based on your Microsoft Windows network, i5/os can help you address the reliability and availability of those resources. iseries NetServer is an operating system function that can provide file and print serving for end users. NetServer unites the IFS and iseries output queues into the Microsoft Network Neighborhood. With NetServer, you get better control of user visibility to resource. The only directories or printers that can be seen by end users are those set up as shared by an administrator or resource owner. 3
i5/os also includes standard TCP/IP Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) an With IP filtering and Network Address utilities such as Telnet, File Transfer industry standard protocol allows Translation (NAT), i5/os can help pro- Protocol (FTP), support for Domain your users secure access to applica- tect other, more vulnerable systems Name system and many others. tions and data on the iseries system and internal networks from outside Security i5/os offers five levels of security on which you can base your system security. Depending on the needs of your business and the applications and data on the system, you can choose anything from minimal security to enhanced security that enables the system to operate at the C2 level of trust as defined by the U.S. Government. Depending on the level of security chosen for a particular system, access to the system and access to resources are protected by passwords. i5/os also protects your system through various levels of network security: by security transactions between the system and compatible client software. i5/os can use digital certificates to establish credentials for remote access before allowing any access to system resources. If you have a complex network, i5/os can us Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM) to consolidate user information into a single, manageable user registry. i5/os offers Virtual Private Networking (VPN) capabilities to increase the security of private transactions over public networks. attack. Linux Running Linux on iseries offers the flexibility of open standards, with important strengths and reliability features of the iseries architecture. i5/os is enhanced to support Linux running in a secondary LPAR. Up to 31 Linux partitions are supported, depending on the iseries model. 4
In a non-hosted environment, the Linux partition does not depend on a hosting i5/os partition for input/output (I/O) resources. The LPAR has its own disk units or the partition uses networking support to perform a network start. You can start a non-hosted LPAR even if the primary partition is not fully active. Alternatively, virtual I/O resources are devices owned by the hosting i5/os partition that provides I/O function to the LPAR. The iseries Linux kernel and i5/os supports several different kinds of virtual I/O resources such as disk, network and CD-ROM. Resources can also be directly attached to a Linux partition so that partition has full control. This flexibility gives you the freedom to run Linux applications based on the needs of your business while offering you the peace of mind from running them on an iseries system. Java Java is a key application development environment for the iseries system. The Java virtual machine (JVM), which resides below the Machine Interface, enables fast interpretation and execution of Java code on iseries systems. A class transformer enables the direct execution of Java on the system without the overhead of interpretation. Java is a complete computing environment, and is a de facto standard for program portability and programmer productivity. Java provides an objectoriented programming environment that is dramatically simpler than C++. The iseries implementation on Java provides improved scalability compared to other Java platforms and synergy with the iseries object-based architecture. With Java and i5/os, you have the option of creating custom applications with legendary iseries reliability and security, while still being able to rely on readily available Java programming skills. 5
DB2 Universal Database (DB2 UDB) DB2 UDB for iseries offers state-ofthe-art database functions with standards-based technology, while providing the maturity, stability, and ease of use that is the trademark of the iseries system. DB2 UDB for iseries is fully integrated into i5/os so you don t have to worry about installation and integration issues. DB2 UDB for iseries can be used for both transaction processing and complex decision support applications. Advanced parallel processing and advanced query optimization techniques support queries of large decision support databases for a variety of data-intensive applications. DB2 UDB for iseries offers the flexibility to access data through iseries applications, from Linux partitions and through standard network interfaces like ODBC. So whatever application you may be running, you can serve its data from DB2. The system offers a host of features to help improve performance and reliability of your data-driven applications. DB2 UDB for iseries offers object-relational technology that allows you to manage large, non-text objects within your database. DB2 UDB includes support for industry standard SQL and provides various extensions to improve performance of queries. And, of course, DB2 UDB for iseries is completely integrated into the system, meaning that you can manage it along with the rest of the system through a single GUI or command language. 6
HTTP server, WebSphere, Domino and WorkPlace The final piece of the puzzle for building your key business applications may be Web capabilities to allow your employees, suppliers and customers to access your applications through standard Web clients. i5/os enables this capability with a built in HTTP server (powered by Apache) and access to the WebSphere family of products for Java technology-based Web application serving. WebSphere Application Server Express is included in i5/os so you can use your iseries applications and data with Web capabilities right away. Additional WebSphere capabilities are available as options, including enhanced versions of the application server, WebSphere Portal Express, WebSphere Commerce and more. You can further enhance the capabilities of your i5/os system with the addition of Lotus Domino software for functions including fax, e-mail, instant messaging and broad-based collaboration. All of these functions integrate with i5/os to provide the ease of management, high reliability, and tight security you expect from an iseries system. 7
