At College Night, I spoke to ECC reps about their programs. They were so helpful, I was able to decide on a major that night. Then I spoke to recruiters from dozens of four-year schools, and I found the perfect school to transfer to. For me, College Night made it all click. Monica Anton 5

ECC programs for high school students Open Enrollment High school students ages 16 and older may take ECC credit courses during the school year with their guidance counselor s permission. During the summer, students do not need permission from their high school. Credit earned may be applied to a degree or certificate at ECC or transferred to another college. Career Development Services High school students can make informed decisions about careers and educational requirements by taking advantage of low-cost career assessments available at ECC. Other career exploration activities available include short-term classes, free self-directed resources, and a variety of programs and events related to career development. Middle College High school seniors in the top 10 percent of their class or who have at least a 3.25 GPA may be able to gain ECC transferable credits as dual credits with a tuition waiver. Classes are taught on ECC s campus during the week in the afternoon in fall and spring semesters. Students can complete college-level courses in psychology, sociology, humanities, calculus, English, and foreign languages. Tech Prep/Dual Credit Some high school students may earn ECC college credits at the same time they complete requirements for high school as participants in a dual-credit program available at some area high schools. Seniors at those participating schools attend ECC courses as part of their regular school day, exploring and experiencing one of 20 career and technical study options. Tuition and books (in some districts) are paid for by participating high schools. Contact the ECC Tech Prep Office at 847-214-7208 or visit elgin.edu/highschool to find out if your high school participates in this program. You can also talk to your high school counselor. Tech Prep/Articulated Credit Some high school courses are linked with ECC courses in 20 career and technical areas, and students may earn college credit for the high school course(s). To receive college credit for tech prep/articulated-credit high school courses, a student must: Earn an A or B in each semester of the articulated high school courses. egister as an ECC student within 27 months of the fall following graduation. Check with your high school guidance office or the Tech Prep Office at 847-214-7208 or visit elgin.edu/highschool for a list of tech prep articulated-credit courses for your district. Upward Bound These pre-college programs provide a smart start for high school students to prepare for college. Upward Bound provides academic assistance and personalized guidance to qualified high school students who want to enhance their options for college by concentrating on their academic and personal development. Participants must meet the following guidelines: The student meets citizenship criteria. The student is a potential first-generation college student (neither parent graduated with a bachelor s degree) and/or the student s family meets low-income guidelines. The student has potential to complete high school and enter and graduate from college. The student is now enrolled in or agrees to enroll in college preparatory curriculum in high school. Upward Bound provides an after-school tutorial program during the academic year, as well as an all-day, six-week summer component. Students are provided with supplemental classroom instruction and academic challenges that they will face in college along with counseling and motivational strategies to further their success. Trustee Early-Start Scholarship This is available for currently enrolled high school juniors and seniors who rank in the top 10 percent of their class or are one of the top three students and who intend to enroll at ECC after graduation. Students receiving these awards may use the scholarship to begin taking ECC courses while still in high school.
