DATA SHEET EMC PowerPath Family PowerPath Multipathing PowerPath Migration Enabler PowerPath Encryption with RSA The enabler for EMC host-based solutions The Big Picture Intelligent high-performance path management with load balancing and path failover optimized for heterogeneous storage environments Enables non-disruptive data migrations and insulates hosts from changes in the infrastructure Provides data-at-rest encryption from the host and secures information by leveraging RSA encryption and key management PowerPath Multipathing Maximize application availability and performance, automate path management, reduce complexity and cost all from one path management solution Multiple path access, workload balancing, path failover, and optimized performance to automate and simplify your tasks EMC PowerPath software is a server-resident, performance and application availability enhancing software solution. PowerPath combines multiple path I/O capabilities, automatic load balancing, and path failover functions into one integrated package. PowerPath supports servers, including cluster servers, connected to EMC, EMC CLARiiON, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), IBM Enterprise Storage Server, and HPQ networked storage systems. PowerPath software resides on open server platforms and supports SCSI, iscsi, and Fibre Channel for both switched fabric and arbitrated loop environments. PowerPath gives you the ability to meet your aggressive service levels with the highest availability and performance and with all the advantages of the industry s leading information storage systems. Storage management just got easier PowerPath prioritizes I/O bandwidth utilization, using sophisticated dynamic load-balancing algorithms to ensure optimal application performance. PowerPath supports dynamic reconfiguration of the storage environment. For example, a user can set application priorities so that one application I/O is processed sooner (high priority) than a low-priority application. PowerPath provides the capability of upgrading your host software without a server reboot. This is currently supported on the Solaris and AIX platforms only. In addition, PowerPath also supports single HBA environments, providing failover for the storage processor (CLARiiON) or cable, or FA port or director (). Storage administrators use PowerPath to handle multiple storage systems with thousands of volumes, being accessed by hundreds of servers, across geographically distributed locations. Your storage investment is protected and lower total cost of ownership is achieved because there s no unwanted downtime resulting from taking systems offline and taking system administrators away from other important duties. Multiple data paths and load balancing provide greater efficiency PowerPath utilizes multiple I/O data paths to share workload and automate load balancing to ensure that data paths are utilized efficiently. Multipathing allows for two or more data paths to be simultaneously used for read/write operations. Performance is thereby enhanced by automatically and intelligently optimizing data access across all available paths. EMC PowerPath is unique in the industry in providing this intelligent multipath load-balancing capability. As a result, more work is done in a shorter time with more customers served, while ensuring optimal application performance.
PowerPath s workload-balancing feature ensures that no one path can become overloaded while others have underutilized bandwidth causing an I/O bottleneck. When one or more paths become busier than others, PowerPath shifts the I/O traffic while keeping track of load characteristics from the busy paths to the others, further enhancing throughput over the already efficient multipathing feature. PowerPath Features Multiple paths to a device Automatic channel failover from the host to the storage Dynamic load balancing across multiple paths Automatic detection and recovery of failed paths Centralized management of storage assets PowerPath Benefits Improves application availability and enhances performance Prioritizes I/O bandwidth utilization and ensures optimal application performance Consistent service levels; less setup and maintenance time Improves application availability and enhances performance Manage heterogeneous storage with a single path management solution Automatic path failover keeps your business in business PowerPath s automatic path-failover and dynamic-recovery feature permits data access to be dispersed to an alternate data path or paths in the event of a failure. This eliminates the possibility of disrupting an application due to the failure of an adapter, cable, or channel controller. In the event of a path failover, all outstanding and subsequent I/O requests are automatically directed to the alternative path. PowerPath has increased its functionality by extending intelligent path management to support failover between the switch and the storage. Instead of losing an active HBA in the event of a path failure, PowerPath fails over to an alternative path resulting in the path being restored. Missioncritical applications continue without interruption, your business remains online, performance is optimized, and your storage assets are maximized. PowerPath s Auto Detect and Auto Restore features allow for periodic probing of inactive paths to check for path failures. Once a failure has been detected and repaired, the path is automatically restored. There is no user intervention required. Enhanced high availability cluster support PowerPath is particularly beneficial in cluster environments by preventing costly interruptions to operations. PowerPath s path-failover capability avoids node failover, thus maintaining uninterrupted application support on the primary node in the event of a single path disconnect. Contact your EMC representative for the most current cluster support information. PowerPath supports native or common HBA drivers. Native HBA drivers allow EMC, EMC CLARiiON, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), IBM Enterprise Storage Server (Shark), and HPQ storage arrays to be addressed from the same HBA.
