Board Briefing Committee: Consent Date Filed: April 27, 2012 Title: UNTHSC Award of Honorary Degree Background: From time to time, the UNT Health Science Center (UNTHSC) awards honorary doctoral degrees to recognize outstanding individuals who have made meritorious contributions throughout their distinguished careers. The faculty and administration propose that the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Public Service, be bestowed upon Timothy R. B. Johnson, MD, and Harvey V. Fineberg, MD, PhD. Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1993 as the Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is also Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Professor of Women's Studies, and Research Professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development. Dr Johnson s education and training have been at the University of Michigan, University of Virginia, and Johns Hopkins. He is Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He is active in international teaching and training, especially in Ghana, Africa, and is an honorary fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, honorary fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Fellow ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London). Author of over two hundred fifty articles, chapters, and books, Dr. Johnson has served on numerous editorial boards, study sections, professional committees, societies and boards and is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. In 2005, Dr. Johnson was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor of ACOG. He is Past President of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Editor of the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Dr. Johnson recently received the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award for his service as role model and mentor for many educators, as well as his commitment to women s health and to women s health education. Currently, he serves as Chair of the UNTHSC Board of Visitors. It would be a great honor for the UNTHSC to present Timothy R. B. Johnson, MD, with the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Public Service, at the UNT Health Science Center s Board of Visitors Dinner on June 1, 2012.
Harvey Fineberg is the President of the Institute of Medicine. He served as Provost of Harvard University from 1997 to 2001, following thirteen years as Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. He has devoted most of his academic career to the fields of health policy and medical decision making. His past research has focused on the process of policy development and implementation, assessment of medical technology, evaluation and use of vaccines, and dissemination of medical innovations. Dr. Fineberg helped found and served as president of the Society for Medical Decision Making and also served as consultant to the World Health Organization. At the Institute of Medicine, he has chaired and served on a number of panels dealing with health policy issues, ranging from AIDS to new medical technology. Co-author of several books, Dr. Fineberg has also co-edited several books on such diverse topics as AIDS prevention, vaccine safety, and understanding risk in society, as well as authored numerous articles published in professional journals. In 1988, he received the Joseph W. Mountin Prize from the Centers for Disease Control and the Wade Hampton Frost Prize from the Epidemiology Section of the American Public Health Association. In October, 2011, Columbia University s Mailman School of Public Health awarded Dr. Fineberg the highest prize in public health The Frank A. Calderon Prize in Public Health. It would be a great honor for the UNTHSC to present Harvey V. Fineberg, MD, PhD, with the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Public Service, at the UNT Health Science Center Commencement Ceremony on May 19, 2012.
