Biography Scavenger Hunt Time: approximately 45-90 minutes (can be divided into separate blocks) Instructional Goals: The student will use the PebbleGo Biographies online database to research six historical figures and to label/ categorize these figures according to their occupational role in history. The student will use subject directory searching to locate needed information. The student will be introduced to the term biography. The student will recognize six important historical figures. Tell students they will be going on a biography scavenger hunt. Discuss with students the term biography. Define the term, and as a class, brainstorm different people in history. 2. Talk about how each of these people is known for a specific occupational role (or job) in history. For example, George Washington is known for being a president. Brainstorm other occupational roles, such as scientist, inventor, athlete, and explorer. Discuss what each of these occupational roles mean. Teach/Model 3. Walk students through the process of accessing the PebbleGo Biographies online database. 4. Show students how subject directory searching works by navigating through the subject directory pictures in PebbleGo Biographies. 5. Demonstrate the read-aloud function by clicking on the appropriate button and listening to the text being read aloud. PebbleGo Lesson Plans 1
Biography Scavenger Hunt 6. Show students the tabs at the top of the screen that allow them to scroll through the biographical information. 7. Demonstrate how students can use the buttons to watch videos. 8. Show the students how they can look through the different pictures of people. Explain that they will need to use the pictures to help them with their Biography Scavenger Hunt activity. Guided Practice 9. Pass out the Biography Scavenger Hunt Pictures and Biography Scavenger Hunt Answers pages. Explain that students will hunt for the people in the subject directory pictures to discover their occupational role. 10. When a student has found one of the people in PebbleGo Biographies, they will cut out the picture from the Biography Scavenger Hunt Pictures page and glue it to the correct section of the Biography Scavenger Hunt Answers page. 11. After gluing the picture, the student will write the person s name in the correct area. 12. Select a picture to use as an example for the class. Have students lead you through the process of clicking through the subject directory to search for the person. When the person is located, have students tell you the occupational role of that person. 13. Model cutting out the picture and gluing it in the correct space on the Biography Scavenger Hunt Answers page. Write the person s name on the blank next to the picture. Point out where you located the person s name in PebbleGo Biographies so you could make sure to spell it correctly on your answer page. Independent Practice 14. Either divide students into pairs or have them work independently. 15. Monitor student progress as they work to complete the Biography Scavenger Hunt activity. Closure 16. Bring students together as a whole group to discuss the Biography Scavenger Hunt Answers. Go through the answers to ensure everyone has the information completed correctly. Extend/Enrich 17. Students may continue to research historical figures and their occupational roles. They may choose a specific person to learn more about and complete a Share What You Know page from the database.
